I found this on a Google search and it's fantastic. I don't know who drew it, but kudos to them That's right, folks, we're going to tackle Yoshi's Island! For those of you who have been living under a rock or were just recently unfrozen from a block of ice and are unaware of the Super Mario Brothers, this is the sequel to Super Mario World. In this one, instead of being the mustachioed plumber himself, we're playing as his sidekick, Yoshi. See, before they grew up, Mario and Luigi were nearly kidnapped by Bowser and Kamek and their goons, but Mario was accidentally dropped on Yoshi Island. The Yoshi's then decided that they were going to reunite the twins and thanks to a bond between them, they can travel through the island to bring Mario back to Luigi. Along the way, we're going to visit tons of different locales, all done in a soft, pastel and crayon style, leading to some wonderfully imaginative environments. They look like a child's drawing, but done with the love and care required to make a truly good game. The game handles quite well, with collectibles scattered in each level, including flowers and special coins, which I'll be collecting all of. In some videos, I won't 100% a level, since I'm aiming to do something more casual here, where I'm just playing a game and having fun; I just happen to be recording it. However, I assure you, I'll always go back to 100% a level. Spoilers aren't really possible for this game, since we all now know the story (reunite Mario and Luigi), and how it'll end (they get reunited), so I guess I don't really have a policy for it. Maybe keep quiet about future levels and boss fights? I know there will be some people who haven't played this game yet, and I think it'd be pretty nice to see their surprise when we get to some levels and bosses. As for updates, expect one or two a week; I'll be doing four levels per update (such as World 1-1 to 1-4, like in the first video), and when I've completed two worlds, I'll do both sets of the bonus levels unlocked so that videos are all about the same length. I announce when I update on Twitter, if you're interested to know that! With that said, let's scoot. Videos Leave fucked around with this message at 05:52 on Feb 20, 2016 |

Oh man, this game. This was one of my favorite games from my childhood, and Yoshi remains my favorite Mario character. Nintendo hasn't really managed to match this game in terms of aesthetic and quality until Yoshi's Woolly World, in my opinion. I manage some sick trick shots in WW thanks to the skills I honed in this game. EDIT: Oh, and the blue guys are indeed called Bandits and that bonus music is the Wing Cap music from Mario 64 but it's also been the Starman/Invincibility music since forever. Seeing this game immediately brought up memories of the horrible carpet patterns and smell of stale popcorn that was Blockbuster video and the childish glee I experienced renting this game so that I could go home and murder things with a dinosaur and baby. I'm looking forward to this one. Also, is anyone else slightly horrified by the concept that the things that Yoshi puts into the eggs are STILL ALIVE? Just... trapped in there. Forever.

At least some of them just drop off the screen with some vague, undefined chance to break free. In Yoshi's Story they loving explode into fireworks suddenly.

I was just old enough when this came out that the cute graphics motif completely turned me off and I had no enthusiasm for it. I only sat down and played it a couple years back, and my final thoughts for the game were that it was very much a tech demo, as it seems to try to spend time doing every possible trick the snes is capable of, but doesn't really focus enough on any one to give it real weight. It's a very fluff game that can be beaten with just a little bit of determination, with very few of the challenges actively hard, and with the game giving you ample opportunity for eggs, stars, and lives in any given level. It kinda is the earliest I can think of where the game developers wanted you to beat the game.

Direct links to deviantArt images have the artist's name in them. With that information, I was able to find the original page. That said, they're less an artist than a compositor; the elements are drawn from the game itself, from the instruction manual, and possibly from other official sources. E: also, watching the video now, you seem to have some commentary sync issues. You're talking about stuff before I see you doing it. You know, this is not a bad game and it's really pretty. But if you go into this game expecting it to be a true sequel to Super Mario World, with similar kinds of platforming and jumping on things and whatnot, you might be in for a bit of a disappointment. The egg-aiming mechanic seems to slow down the platforming, for instance. That's why I find it hard to consider this game a mainline Mario game. Then again, Super Mario Bros 2 is really different from the others too.

It's more like Super Mario World than Zelda 2 was like its predecessor.

The DS version gives you different characters that can ride oe on Yoshi's back and give him different abilities, but that's about it.

Hey, everybody, we've finished off the first world of Yoshi's Island! And as mentioned in the video, this is why you do a test run before recording this sort of thing; I did not, letting my arrogance get the best of me, and it made me look like an rear end in a top hat. Remember, folks, make sure you know what the hell you're doing before you record it and post it on the internet. 'course, not everyone follows that advice or has that mentality (i.e., tumblr and a lot of Reddit folks), but it seems to be a pretty good rule of thumb.

Those 3D rolling things had really very simple textures, they were not much more than single polygons. I suppose that's really the limit of what the SNES can handle? I think getting 3D working on that must have been quite the challenge in any case.

Yeah, the Fuzzys are where emulators go to die. I've yet to see a single one that doesn't crap the bed on that level. You can play through it, but it sure doesn't work the way it's supposed to.

My favorite part of that level is how the fuzzy effect actually messes with the level geometry.

The three major emulators that exist handle it just fine. ZSNES is the only one that requires a change in the settings to fix it. And it was working in the video, too.

I'm not quite caught up, but I DO have an interesting fact. There's a reason keys are in flower pots: the word for a flower pot is かき (kaki), while the word for a key is かぎ (kagi). Puns are the moral of the story, basically.

I would like to be the guy to point out, that in the GBA port of the game, they COMPLETELY washed out the colors on the hidden red coins. AKA: They were indistinguishable from regular coins, because gently caress you. So you either had A. The strategy guide right next to you the entire time (Which I did), B. Looked things up on GameFAQS, or C. Waited a few years for youtube to actually be a thing and look it up there.

Woo Yoshi's Island. One of my more favorite SNES platformers due to the amazing art style (only Kirby's Dreamland 3 is better than this) and being a bit more unique in how it plays than most 2D Mario's on account of the whole escort thing.
