Furism posted:Not a big fan of the Avatar Project thing. I hate time limits and that's apparently what it is. I realize it was possible to delay a little bit too much in XCOM1, just rack in XP to get the best possible squad for the Temple Ship, but that was also kind of cool. We'll see how it turns out, but having to beat the alien clock doesn't super fun to me. I'm sure there will be mods to take it out. I'm also sure it would utterly break the game. I mean it's basically the standard roguelike mechanic of a hunger timer or Spelunky's ghost. It's the necessary pressure to make decisions in the game dangerous and meaningful.

Yes I realize that adding that stress condition is actually a pretty good game design, it just tends to... stress me too much My problem, really. I hope there's not too much randomness around this and losing a game will mean that, ultimately, you made bad choices instead of just having bad luck. , I know.

Has it been confirmed there's Avatar progress not tied to onmap bases you can reset by attacking? Even if not, I don't see why it's worse than EU's doomclock. Did that bother you too?

Furism posted:Yes I realize that adding that stress condition is actually a pretty good game design, it just tends to... stress me too much My problem, really. TBH, this was pretty much the main difference between the original XCOM: EU's singleplayer and its multiplayer. In the case of the first, like you said, the stress conditions on 'time available' were laughable most of the times, whereas with the case of the second time is ultra-critical, especially considering every move had a chance of lag-glitching ect. So whereas in singleplayer, you could take all the time you liked, in multiplayer you absolutely had to think moves ahead on the enemy turn as to what you were going to do to give you the best chances and best approach possible, and then not waste time and just do it. It really did start to feel like timed chess and the more moves you could see ahead as fast as you could, the better your odds were to make the best decisions possible. So yea, I can definitely see where you're coming from and don't blame you one bit for hoping for a mod to remove that factor from the singleplayer. For me, tho, it's exactly what made me really love the original's multiplayer, no matter how buggy and unbalanced it may have been, and why I'm legit curious to see, if XCOM 2's initial multiplayer people won't actually be a bit more capable of adapting to it, precisely because they will have already (at least to some degree) trained for that stress condition, as you put it, within their first singleplayer campaign.

I'm sort of hoping the final mission is in fact a series of consecutive missions, where injured squad members have no time to heal so you have to either play a perfect game or be training a B-Team just in case. Mainly because I don't want to steamroll the game with a single super-elite squad.

Judging from what we've seen and what I can extrapolate from it, it's not going to be a case where a few cases of bad luck are going to cost you the game. You can probably even lose a couple of missions and be okay, nevermind losing a few soldiers. The game is going to hurt between the matters of bad luck and bad decision making and I think the only reason you're going to ever lose the game is due to really poor decision making. XCOM is a series in which you make your own luck.

It's kind of weird to think about, but not only do we already know who the final force behind all this is (in a sense), we've already faced off with them. Hell, many of us probably already beat them. Watching the endgame cinematics in XCOM1 is so strange now because you see the Uber Ethereal in its moments of "Ah, our plan was solid, and we were so close!", only to realize we're a week away from plunging into this alternate universe where that rear end in a top hat won. Seeing that confrontation and knowing this is how things could have gone is so bizarre.

I've gone from 'Oh Cool' to super pumped for this realising it is out in just a week. My other half was more into EU than I was (I still love old X-COM though) but she is struggling to get excited for 2. She seems to be mainly tripping up on the snake aliens and wondering why an alien looks so much like something from Earth and doesn't get the breasts.

They're all tested and compatible for LW's final release, and can be installed anytime you like. Both the patcherGUI mods and the easier long war DCG. Doesn't have to be before or after a campaign, though changes will of course not be retroactive. Fortunately most of the changes don't need to be retroactive, the only big thing I did that won't transfer is I increased the minimum mobility a soldier could have by 1, but that triggers on recruitment so only new soldiers will benefit.
