Modern tanks use a complex set of prisms and mirrors to move the laser for the rangefinder as well as the light for physical sighting from the optics center to the crew compartment. Example: the doghouse on the Abrams does this. So yes, the crew can get an analog image without a straight line of optics.

Blind Rasputin posted:Can someone explain this one to me? The comms officer thinking the pilot did a good job? They're refueling. Good chance the pilot spent 4+ minutes trying to catch that loving basket, while dealing with the turbulent air behind that KC-135. Probe & Drogue refueling is stupid, but it's the only way the Navy can have their own tankers (literally other fighters carrying extra gas in external tanks).

Also I've heard from multiple people that the bastardized KC-135 set-up where the drogue is attached to the boom with a short length of hose is much more difficult to hook up to than a dedicated hose reel set-up (like the KC-10 has or like you get with buddy stores). Apparently it's due to differences in how the drogue performs when it's on a short length of relatively rigid hose compared to being on a much longer length of more flexible hose, also the fact that I'd imagine the turbulence is much worse in that regime than compared to being strung out for a hundred feet behind the tanker. I'm sure Dead Reckoning has some stories about all the stupid poo poo that's occurred when Navy aircraft are trying to hook up to a -135 configured in that fashion.

One of the big pushes over the last couple of months has been to get drones out as training devices at the CTCs; this was the first time they were used. Those drone flights supported an attack by the bad guys who won in an even more embarrassing fashion than they usually do. I don't really know any more specific open source details past that, but that was a unit in a tactical posture fighting as they would in a real situation.

Nah, it's more "wait, what do you mean the bad guys have airplanes and artillery?!? I was told we had all the flying things and the big guns and all the other guy had was IEDs, this shatters my entire world view!" that's what happens when you spend a decade and a half focusing solely on Operation Useless Dirt to the exclusion of anything else

Those aren't "formations," those are FOBs. There are both permanent and temporary structures inside berms, with clearly visible ECPs, and plenty of support vehicles littered throughout. Notice the abundance of HMMWVs, LMTVs, and HEMTTs, and the relative scarcity of actual gun trucks. That's somebody's HHC and attachments. If the CTs hit them with a FOB defense scenario, of loving course they'd get obliterated. 11th ACR's OPFOR always beats the visiting team, because that's their job. e: Additionally, we don't know what the overall training scenario is for that unit; it could be COIN, it could be full spectrum. I don't know what Something Awful forums user bewbies' qualifications are, but lambasting a unit based on three photos with no other contextual information is pretty unfair, even when we all know that unit probably sucks anyway. e2: lol it's 2SBCT 2ID.
