For TPP, you need to make sure that you can afford the loadout, pick it, deploy in free roam, wait for the helicopter to land, go and setup the mission area (blow up watchtowers, open gates, etc), then go to the start of the mission area, wait for the appropriate time of day, and then start the mission.

If I complete the mission and want to go again, I need to reacquire the resources for the loadout and if I extracted via cargo container (or otherwise modified the world state in a way that was undesirable), I need to play 5 missions in order to respawn it (c2w is the one you do over and over), and then redeploy as above.

None of this is true, though? Other than paying for your loadout, I guess. You can start missions from your helicopter and never need to go to free roam mode at all. No missions require being "set up." Starting a mission in free roam doesn't require you to wait until the right time of day, and in fact the vast majority of missions can be done at any time. On the rare occasions when a specific time of day is required, starting the mission will automatically flash time forward. You shouldn't be using loadouts that you can't afford to use repeatedly, but even if you are you aren't REQUIRED to grind out stuff for them because you can just choose a different loadout and there's like one mission in the game that requires a specific weapon.

The only missions that need to "respawn" are side missions, and those can only become unavailable because another one is taking their spot, so repeating one other mission over and over wouldn't do it anyway. Missions get less rewarding over time but you can still DO them even if you hit zero reward. There's only two missions I can think of that you get locked out of, and by the time you hit endgame they become unlocked again so...

e: I know a lot of stuff was changed for the worse/more grindy in patches since I finished, but what you're describing sounds like a completely different game and I'm a little baffled.

Yeah, my MGSV experience was

- pick a mission
- choose a load out
- land in the nearest LZ
- do the mission
- call the heli
- wait around while the heli blares the final countdown or some other nonsense
- exit the mission
- repeat

I guess they've locked up resources behind the online component now but I always had way more cash than I new what to do with. Sometimes developing stuff had to wait, but it was always because of fuel, not cash, and it never eve effected my load out.

I've had at least one pal a month picking it up since launch and as time went on, stories turned from "This is great, you'd love it" into "How the hell did people enjoy this", especially the wait times. Straight up real-time days or weeks on end for one item as research continues, you're locked down to a minimal amount of cash* if you play offline/their servers crash, online is a fuckfest on PC, and more than a couple going "what dude X told me about progressing the game is not working so I have to google around for random idiots' theories to finish my game".

* One told me they lost a massive amount of stuff due to a server timeout suddenly leaving them miles in the red at a mission's end.

So you're saying that if you want to game the system to set everything up in just the right way to cheese a high score, that it's kind of awkward to do and takes some effort?

How is this a ding for TPP compared to PW in any way other than your weirdly anal edge case?

It isn't. I'm just talking about my experience with it. Though, it does touch on how obtuse the systems surrounding the actual gameplay are.

In PW once you complete the research, you're free to play the game how you wish, while in TPP, deployment costs for top items mean you either just don't use those items or you grind picking up flowers, or you wait a few hours for your flower deployments to come back. The system doesn't really do anything except make you play the game less.

Was there ever a situation where you tried to deploy and didn't have enough resources? That never, never happened to me, and I was almost always using good gear. There are some very purposely limited items like the parasite stuff, but that was it.

Now upgrading FOBs was severely limited in terms of fuel resources, but that's the only issue I had.

Top rank sleep grenades and tranq weapons have absurd requirements.

But, really, what is the actual purpose of the deployment costs? They make people hesitant to deploy with a whole bunch of tools they might not use, which runs counter to where the fun lies in that game, which is in trying novel strategies. I can't think of anything positive that they do. The research costs could have been tuned to offset the lower amount of resources that you're spending. My guess is that it was intended to feed the management sim part of the game, as being a way of increaing your operating costs as you grow. But, when your plant income is primarily from pickups in missions, what this actually means is that you just eat into the reserves you picked up early in the game whem deployment costs were low, and when you run out, that's it.

I have to wonder how much of this are players naturally seeking out said resources. I had no issue with surplus of even the rarest plants but I can't imagine how much time was spent going above and beyond to collect every random plant that flashed on my radar. Someone playing more directly could totally run out of turmeric or whatever for their tranq gun and there was a period where I couldn't roll with sleep mines/grenades until I knew spots to farm purple whatever. I also never cared to farm resources so it always was a struggle to have enough GMP to get more than 1 or 2 upgrades at a time. Post chapter 1 every mission basically turned into a net loss because the helicopter alone sucked up half the reward and a resupply another quarter.

I can't imagine ever replaying this game from the beginning. I'll want to rush through it but it's intentionally difficult. You could roll through with the default equipment but eventually you'll hit a wall and need to grind.

I'm looking forward to today's episode of Retronauts on HAL. I distinctly remember as a child seeing HAL pop up in my favorite games on the SNES and was ecstatic to learn that HAL was behind the original Super Smash Bros. I think that might be my earliest memory of seeking out a specific development studio because of titles like Kirby Super Star and Earthbound were (and still are) such beloved games.

...But you get reimbursed at the end of a mission for the stuff you didn't use, right down to the ammo...

Edit: also the expanded FOB/online stuff since launch isn't all negative, there's now several ways to acquire whatever specific resources you want. You can straight up buy resources for PF points (which you accrue without having to do anything at all.)

I agree with you. Especially that news coming out confirming that he was knowingly deceiving and lying about the whole WMD thing this week.

Unlike the last batch of Noted War Criminals, he's decided to branch out from just being a Foreign Policy Expert on Fox News and is basically doing the advertising for a mobile game. It's like if Kate Upton was a war criminal instead of a model.

Oh I see! This must be the Bad Opinion Zone!
Isn't there actually zero evidence that this solitaire game is connected to Churchill at all, beyond Rumsfeld's say-so?

quote:

Working with Mr. Rumsfeld, the Churchill family combed the prime minister's papers, including his correspondence with Mr. de Staercke, for a reference to the game.

Gordon Wise, the representative of Churchill Heritage Ltd., said neither Mr. de Staercke, who died in 2001, nor Mr. Churchill made reference to solitaire in their letters. But the closeness of their friendship, Mr. Wise said, means the story of the game "is entirely credible."

"Churchill was very fond of card games," Mr. Wise said. "He was no slouch in the casino. Well, he was somewhat a slouch. But he was no stranger to the casino. Cards were very much in the mix as his preferred version of entertainment."

So yeah, if you buy this bit of PR for a freemium mobile card game, well, boy do I have an invasion plan for you....
