So for the people who read that XCOM 2 prequel novel thing, was it incompetence on XCOMs part that caused the council to panic, bad luck, or just plain corruption within the council? There was a fan theory that I always kind of liked that said that XCOM was a "Worst of the Best" sort of deal, in that the nations that make up the council aren't contributing their absolute best because they want to hedge their bets, which makes XCOM not as effective as it ultimately could be.

I'm not ruling out MECs considering what Firaxis thought would surprise people as a fifth class, but it would be silly not only on the PR front, but because from comments amineri made on r/xcom it seems in addition to the shared MEC animations, they also included all the MEC voicesets, along with all the EU/EW icons for abilities and what not as well in the mod assets. Like I expect it to be something cybernetic-related but not actually MECs as they were in EU/EW, since that would just lead to the path of the self-inflicted own since everybody would just download the MEC class mod instead of paying seven bucks or whatever they plan on charging for the DLC individually.

It looks like you can choose some exo-suit looking things as customization options but they're only cosmetic? I assume there must be some kind of research/engineering development along those lines, though.

Lets you carry a heavy weapon like a rocket launcher or flamethrower. The other armor types give you a second accessory slot or a grappling hook.

I haven't finished it yet but in the prologue Bradford implies that it was a betrayal, one of the Council nations rolled over on XCOM to try and protect themselves. It wasn't like the game over in EU where the project gets shut down by the Council, XCOM HQ gets raided by the aliens super-early and that's when the Commander was captured.

Draw out maps, get rules systems to support your ideas, and see what works and what is broken. It will likely never be a published game, but if you have fun with it, who gives a poo poo? It will also give you some insight into systems, and how one change over here can break something over there, if you can wrap your mind about it. The current devs for XCom started, I believe, by making a table top game. you can see it with the grid system and the dice rolls to see if you hit or not, as well as the hp/damage system.

Seriously Junpei, just shut the gently caress up and do something with your ideas. The first thing you do isn't going to set the world on fire but there's going to be a final product and the experience gained from and fun involved in making it. Don't make plans for huge fan game projects, just jump in and do some small project for yourself. Or you'll find out along the way that actually developing a game is not something you're up to right now, and then you'll at least know that.

Junpei, I was like you once. Full of self-proclaimed fantastic ideas and only needing people to turn my dreams into reality. I was in high school when I first tried recruiting for a project as an ideas guy. I got laughed out of the forum and thankfully, one of the people there imparted wisdom to me. He said that it's never enough to be an ideas guy, especially when you don't have any proof that you can deliver. You have to work toward it. Draw characters, do simple coding, show people that you're willing to work but know you don't have every necessary skillset. This doesn't mean make a lovely game with a ton of placeholder art; it means make the most of your abilities on your own and if people can perceive your ability and drive, they will follow. You're never too young to learn and never too old to begin. The only person who is going to stop you from making it a reality is yourself. Look at it in the same way as someone trying to lose weight. You need to overcome the haters. You need to fight against the part of you that doesn't want to work hard. You need to be ready to struggle. People don't just stumble into a perfect game concept or team. Indie dev is in one of the best places ever right now, you have loads of free tools, free tutorials, and post-mortem reports. Grab ahold of your future and make it into whatever you can dream of. It's cliche, but what ARE you waiting for? Tomorrow becomes next week, which becomes next month, which becomes next year, which becomes never because you don't have the lack of responsibility to take risks anymore.
