Man, that is so uncomfortable and awkward. I mean, I understand wanting to broaden your reader base and try new things but that's one road you don't want to go down. I looked up who Onta was and I deeply, but unsurprisingly, regretted it.

Let's not forget that Brandon Graham pretty much got his start in comics doing porn, including Multiple Warheadz. It's not really surprising to see Onta's work in Island, and if it's entertaining then great! The criticism about the cover is legit, though. Maybe it's commentary on furry fandom being like an isolating island because of the stigma associated with it?

Shutter is good too, though the animal-people aren't really the focus of the story. My favorite is crocodile janitor with too-small shirt. Even if you're right, you can still reach the same conclusion from the same argument. I've seen furries try and compare their experiences on the internet/life to actual LGBTQ discrimination and it's always rubbed me the wrong way. Not saying this comic is guilty of that though. People shouldn't be made fun of for consensual, harmless sex poo poo or whatever, regardless.

But if it sucks due to artistic failings then it'll just reinforce biases. Plus I'm not sure what exactly a gay furry story is supposed to convey, as I'm assuming the story is about gay human-esque cartoon animals and not actual furries (which might challenge readers). Should Island have an issue where Jim Balent gets to tell his story of huge titty bumblebee ghost vampire vixens so people can have their biases against whatever subculture likes Tarot is challenged? He's the thing that confuses me. Why animal people at all? Just make them gay teens and nothing in the comic would be changed at all. At least that way readers can actually relate to that instead of lion and horse-man at pride. Blacksad and such uses animal motifs to tie in character motives and behaviors to their respective species and makes statements about human behavior in the process. Making them animals just for the sake of animals is no different than bronies shoving ponies in Fallout. It's there just because they can. And if Island wants to challenge preconceptions there's a lot of things other than furry hate that would be far more beneficial/relatable. Trans issues, genderqueer, non-gender, etc. I'm just barely scratching the surface here. Another issue is that furries are not an identity or orientation and trying to equate the two is confusing at best and offensive at worst. It's a fetish, which is perfectly fine, we all have one. But when people start treating it like it's a part of their identity then a host of issues start to pop-up and then we all start arguing. If anything Island #6 did get me to write all those words about furries so it may have had the effect it wanted after all!

There was a furry thread in GBS that had an ask/tell with a former well-known furry that was really interesting. He stated that he basically got into it because it was a friendly accepting group and he felt like he wasn't being judged. He left after becoming disillusioned with it and rumors of bestiality started to affect him. I imagine that a lot of people join up for similar reasons. If you're gay or trans and don't have a safe space or someone around you who isn't judgemental I can see why a community would be helpful. I'm not sure furries are just doing it to "freak the mundanes" but to protect their community, which is understandable. To be completely open about it, I'm biased as I work in social services and have had clients that were furries and had engaged in acts of bestiality. It's clouded my view of furries and left me deeply uncomfortable about furries in general after that. Obviously I can't go to much in detail but my anecdotal experience definitely makes me worry about furries and their view and perception of animals in relation to their identity. This doesn't mean anything overall, of course. The issue lies with me and me alone on that end but it might explain why I feel conflicted. I'm thankful for the discussion as it has helped me alter my perception, if only a little.

I don't read Island because Brandon Graham, while making things I like, has super weird and questionable taste. There's like two comics in it I find interesting and the rest are viscerally not my poo poo. It's sad because I'd like to see more anthologies but it's hard to justify shelling out the price of two or three other comics for like a dozen pages of something I want. Same thing goes for Dark Horse Presents too, but Onta definitely doesn't help.

Shorts. If a fursuit has shorts it's for loving. This knowledge gained per that really awesome and informative A/T thread. IIRC, the poster was working on a Lion King hyena fursuit before leaving the fandom and people asked how you would gently caress in a suit like that. Long story short(!) is that you don't unless you have shorts on the suit and the shorts touch the skin.

The new issue of Injection is really good, and it looks like it's going to be more of the same. Which I am quite fond of. Also ugh I wish we didn't have to wait until April for the next WicDiv, and there isn't even any more Phonogram to tide me over.
