meh that's a bad analogy, more like "if you don't know how to develop film in your own basement, why on earth would you build a photo lab"

wanting to buy a pc is fine, wanting to build a pc is fine, wanting to build a pc without understanding what you're doing is bad

skylake is also fine because who uses ecc or pcie drives on a sane person computer, with a single gpu @ x16 yeah the lanes are full but nothing else is plugged in so

skylake has 16 on the CPU and 20 more on the chipset (which have a throughput of 4 to the CPU which only matters if you are insane and want to stuff your EATX FULL TOWER :pcgaming: rig full of overpriced Intel PCIe SSDs all running at full speed at the same time to barf data into a 10gig ethernet connection for nebulous reasons)

considering real computers used by actual humans have a 16 lane graphics card (which works just fine on 8 by the way) and maybe a 1 lane USB3 controller plus some random 1 lane special snowflake card i don't see the problem here

all that multiplexing matters a lot if you care about i/o or latency. now your network card and your ssd have to fight for bandwidth. and yes, they actually use that bandwidth -- your network card expects to have direct memory access, and all those accesses are now multiplexed with other dma devices.

and a second graphics card is just not an option at all

the skylake systems architecture is pentium II-land. a southbridge handles all the I/O and then tries to cram it through a hilariously underspecced link to the actual CPUs.

all the cheap haswell chips have a similar limitation. if you pay enough money, they will give you a haswell that isn't crippled by design. this is called either "haswell-E" or "xeon E3-1600 v3," depending on whether you want to pay the extra $10 for ECC.

the high-end skylakes haven't come out yet. i'm not sure they're going to come out at all. intel might wait until skylake's follow-up for a new set of high-end chips.

the non-ecc chip with un-hosed i/o is only $15 cheaper

i guess if you give zero fucks about data corruption, that's a great way to save $15. just think, a medium Pizza Hut Anime Lovers, all for you, stolen from those greedy data monks at intel. what do they know, anyway

could be. probably not tho

unless you bought a skylake or just completely hosed everything up, it is probably not contention for pci/e bandwidth
