Anyone here ever attempted an early release for employment packet? My previous get out of the army trick fell through because I was deemed "essential personnel" while submitting to get out a year early because I decline to re-enlist and my unit is shutting down. Being in a unit where the highest level is BDE, and a useless power-tripping one at that, is hell.

Most of UCSD's programs are pretty solid. Ocean Institute is better for water biology stuff.

Possible, but in a dozen years I've only ever seen it work for doctors and lawyers. I've seen a bunch of enlisted get out early for school, though.

I got one approved. If I remember correctly the MILPER says you must not be mission essential, so if you are then you might be screwed. I'm not sure how someone is deemed mission essential, but I'd imagine there must be some sort of memo that says so. I don't know if that's one of those things that your commander can just magic into existence, but I'm sure other people here would know more.

Anyway, first I'd go to your S1 to see if they have an example packet. If they don't have one then go to your transitions office and see if they have one. Ultimately they're the ones who process it, so it's up to them what is absolutely needed. Your CO/BN/BDE CDR might want more, like a transitions counseling for instance. They might also want to talk to you about it, so be prepared for that. I'd recommend knowing about the offered position, having a budget, and being able to articulate why this will be a win/win for both you and the Army. I spoke to my 1SG, CDR, BN CSM, BN CDR, BDE CSM, and BDE CDR.

At my post you need the following in a packet to be accepted by transitions:
4187
Job Offer (w/ start date and salary)
ETS DA31 (Working Copy)
Current SGLV (iPerms)
Current DD93 (iPerms)
Current ERB (AKO)
Any Enlistment contracts (iPerms)

On the 4187 it goes from CO Commander through BN Commander to Transitions Center. For personnel action choose "Other - Request for Early Separation Ch16-7". For Remarks put:

4187 posted:

Request 180 days early separation to accept employment, under ALARACT 340/2013, 10 USC Section 1171. My current Expiration Term of Service (ETS) date is DATE. Request early separation of DATE, with transition leave beginning DATE. My term of employment will begin immediately following my requested separation date.

JUSTIFICATION: In order to obtain an employment contract I must start no later than DATE @ EMPLOYER. If unable to separate early my employment contract will be terminated and no further contract will be discussed. This will cause personal hardship on me and my family because this is guaranteed employment for me after my ETS. I have attached my employment offer from EMPLOYER.

I am not mission essential to my assigned organization.

Encl:
1. Job Offer
2. Initial Enlistment Contract
3. ERB
4. DD93
5. SGLV
6. DA31

You might have to change the ALARACT if a new one came out about this. Change the # of days as needed up to 180 days. Then in the routing on the second page you need to do from CO CDR to BN CDR with BN CDRs name, then from BN CDR to BDE CDR with BDE CDRs name.

Good luck

Edit: Just saw your previous post saying yours got approved. I'll leave this up for anyone else who might need it though.

What is your situation? Are you going to DLI? Are you just taking the DLPT with no class work beforehand?

Generally speaking, if you can read the newspaper in your target language and follow along with radio broadcasts then you should be set. Memrise.com is great but regular flash cards work just as well for learning new vocabulary.

Also I'm a poo poo 2+/2+ linguist so keep that in mind

Edit for clarity. My routine is to read the news, make a note of the words I don't know, then study those. If you need more structure than this you can find course-like work on the DLI website among other places

Thanks for the very detailed and useful response, I will go see transitions tomorrow. I was deemed "mission essential" because we are low on people and I am now an S2 Analyst and armorer...which I also think is a conflict of interest but sure why not. Hopefully it goes well, otherwise its wait until late July and hope for a school release. The previous post was my last attempt at getting out, which got as far as my phase 2 physical and finishing ACAP/TAPS, but then getting denied at the BDE CDR interview part.

Hopefully the job itself will pass merit, it pays much better than my poo poo enlisted pay, and it will be a DCGS-A instructor in Kuwait at AJ so hopefully I can spin the still training and aiding the Army piece.

I'm in a Civil Affairs unit and not going to DLI it is just helpful to know the language and the unit will pay me to take refreshers to get better. And I'm going to be a CA Officer at some point FY 17 so it would help.

WOOOOOOOO!!!!

Narsum came back, it's moderately thick but not crazy. Some stuff I won't be getting back but it looks like the majority will. See legal on the 9th whom have the upmost disrespect for commanders like mine (I told the guy who gave me the initial IDES brief that his info helped me out a lot) and when I told the receptionist I needed a note saying what time I left their office, she did the jerk off hand sign, said we don't do that poo poo here, and told me she was a retired 1SG with 37 years mixed of service. She then asked when would be a good time, I mentioned motor stables is supposedly off limits and without telling her the time or day she said "well you already have an appointment at that time." I said she might get a phone call with out the note and she said "I'll tell your commander to gently caress off. I'm. It afraid of him."

Love it love it love it guys.

They are trying to gently caress my buddy over by not letting him clear as intended in 3 weeks because they want him to extend his orders or sell leave. So IG or the Ombudsman is gonna come to town.

My commander also wrote some really cool things about me saying that I showed that I felt like I was aloof (lol?) and that I couldn't handle basic tasks (lol!) and I make ill and often poorly timed jokes. That part is probably true. Regardless, gently caress him. He denied me taking a pass, one of two I had submitted (the other was for my anniversary late Janurary and was denied despite being on his memo clearly stating that that or my birthday is ok) to see Puscifer in concert early December. Yesterday he didn't show up to PT or at work, despite saying it is unmissable, because he wanted to see AC/DC.

loving hypocrite.

I hope my buddy burns this place down around me as I start to ACAP.

Can't they deny your terminal leave if "the mission dictates"? Honestly curious because I get out in a few months and have like 40 days of terminal and am worried about them not letting me take it all.

The Slithery D

You get paid for unused leave when you separate, assuming you never cashed out leave before (once per career). Only your base salary, not BAS/BAH, but it doesn't just disappear. If you don't have a job yet you're better off taking terminal leave, but if you can start work right away then separating earlier and taking money for leave will earn you more money.

I'm aware of that, I'm asking if they can tell you "no, you can't take terminal leave, you have to sell it"

No. Leave is a right, not a priviledge. If they deny you leave, ask for a memorandum stating why, take it to separations and contact IG.

Hi guys. Since I've been out of the army my drinking has gone down a VERY SIGNIFICANT amount. It's been great. Waiting to go to school and pursue a computer science degree I think, but who knows how that will turn out. I had to stop posting in GIP because at the time thinking about the army just made me so loving mad. Like incredibly mad. It's great to be out though, even though I don't make as much money and poo poo. IDGAF because it honestly wasn't worth it. The only downside is I have no friends, but moving around and poo poo for 12 years does that. Hopefully school will fix that!

gently caress DFAS. I qualified for tax exempt status on my disability severance, but I had to fax paperwork to their office by the end of the calendar year in order to get my money back. I did all of that and then waited since I never heard anything else. After spending two hours on the phone just now I found out that they never received all of the paperwork so now I have to file an amended tax return because they never contacted me to let me know they hosed up. It's not too difficult to do, especially since I have multiple copies of all the paperwork I need, but goddamn is it just upsetting as all hell. gently caress DFAS, gently caress the army, gently caress you if you're still in.
