SovietPotatoe posted:

Regarding all the RNG talk, the first game did lie to you about hit chances and actively fudged numbers in the background, giving aim bonuses to XCOM after misses and penalties to aliens after hits. When modders removed it the result was huge hit/miss chains where you could frequently spend an entire turn missing high% shots, way beyond anything statistically reasonable. So unless Firaxis changed their design philosophy and made an actually decent RNG this time around you can't just dismiss any complaints as bad luck because for all the know the RNG for the second game might be just as screwed up as the first one.

On a somewhat related note it seems they went all out on the RNG which makes it all the more frustrating. I'm getting 70-80% shots on point blank flanks when IIRC the first game would have given you a 95%. Sure, even a 95% could miss but it still made close range flanks a lot more reliable and by cranking up the miss chances it feels like the game is actively trying to reduce the impact of proper tactics and trying to be more of a dice game and that's just plain frustrating.

That happened to assist xc on the lower difficulties. It didn't exist on classic up.

I want to urge people to not use Ironman mode at the moment. The game is buggy and it might mean that I have to restart the game from the beginning. I am having a feeling that my current crashing is due to the new AMD drivers not sitting well with my R9 380, because I have been getting similar crashes in other games, just less consistently. I did have a regular crash (XCOM 2 has stopped working) earlier too, so I doubt it is just my PC causing issues.

It is a little bit: The Workshop lets you build helper Gremlins that can be used as engineers to staff adjacent buildings.
Other than that I haven't noticed anything.

Trip report, no crashes at all yet in I'm embarrassed to say how many hours. Using beta AMD drivers as of yesterday on a 290 the thing runs just fine on 1440 with everything maxed except msaa, which murders the framerates and I can't see a whole amazing amount of difference with it on, or at least not one worth stuttering over.

It's not doing the full 96hz but it'll do fine! Won't complain if they optimise but won't lose sleep if they don't.

So how'd I get my very own Beagle in my game to murd- uh, to lead my squad to victory? Just putting in soldier names doesn't seem to work.

The only enemy I think is genuinely bullshit at the moment is the Lancer type. Run and Gun for melee would be bearable if they couldn't poke you into permanent unconsciousness for a single point of damage. For some reason I'd be less annoyed if it just did 7 damage and killed the soldier outright.

So I'm playing Commander difficulty, I only finished my first classic EU game like a month ago and I'm so much better at this game than I was at EU. I guess I'm an over-aggressive moron and this game caters to that style.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to hear that the second tutorial mission has under the hood changes to get a few of your guys killed, it's been the only mission so far I had a lot of trouble with.

Absolutely loving this game.

I had my entire squad wipe on that mission after triggering two pods. One guy got flanked and killed, which set off a panic spiral in which two of my soldiers hunkered down next to a burning car, which promptly exploded the following turn. Then Van Doorn tried to make a heroic last stand even though the objective was basically lost at that point. He died the following turn.

Of course, that can backfire... some men like their bitches crazy.
So far so good, I'm on a 560ti and can get a solid 30 fps for cutscenes and 30-60fps in battle. Medium settings with textures on high.

The real killer seems to be anti aliasing. If I keep it on mxaa everything is fine and looks good. But proper aa just decimates my framerates.

Heres hoping nvidia release a driver update soon to optimise stuff, but aside from that I'm pretty happy with how well it all runs :)

Now time to kill some ayyys!

The one with the power relay? Nah. Just did it on commander. One lady wounded, otherwise aced. Though it was a pretty close thing on the last trooper. If he'd gotten another turn I would have lost someone.

The accuracy with the melee weapon makes me a bit nervous. I know there's going to be a clutch moment where I want to slash something and it fails completely. Then the aliens kill half the squad.

One mod I'd like to see/make is having a pod of aliens fighting a pod of resistance members, and if you rescue them in time they'll assist you in saving everyone else. Of course, since they count towards your rescue goal, getting them killed can cause you to fail if you didn't rescue enough civilians already, so no using them to scout or ferret out Faceless.

Hasn't happened to me yet, but I know it's just a matter of time. I shudder to think of my star Ranger whiffing a slash when she's utterly overextended because I got too greedy.

But damnit, humanity's on the brink! We need bold tactics!

I had the impression from the mission intro video that these people aren't members of the Resistance as much as peaceful people off the grid that sometimes communicates with them and gives them supplies.

Running on a poo poo integrated video laptop but it is running OK at minimum settings. The only really annoying part is there is like 20 seconds between the last alien move and when I can go again every turn. Don't know if it is just the tutorial or if it will always be this bad, but it doesn't seem to be a graphics card issue as the graphics stay responsive during the whole time, it is just like there is this giant pause in scripting.
