poop dood posted:Here's a new video of some people on Youtube I've never heard of tasting apocalypse-themed cocktails with Travis and Andie. Predictably, Travis steals the show and Andie is insufferable. On the one hand, Andie isn't talking about conspiracies so that's a plus. On the other, oh no, she wears those loving gloves all the time doesn't she?

Didn't see it mentioned, but Travis announced on the last "Trends Like These" that it'll be joining MaximumFun. I know there were jokes about them making their own network, but if anything it's opposite now. One by one the other MaxFun shows will lifecycle and be replaced my McElroy shows.

Which Travis was totally right about, too. Projectionists gently caress up matting all the time. Though less so nowadays with digital.

To the point that the screen would be showing boom mikes and cables? I understand messing up the projection, but to Justin's point, why would that stuff have been filmed in the first place?

It's called "open matte", you film leaving plenty of wiggle room on the frame (often picking up boom mics, camera tracks, etc) with the anticipation that the movie will be cropped into different aspect ratios afterwards.

I think it's just one of those things about film. http://deep-focus.com/10_things_theaters_get_wrong/

I doubt it gets to the projectionist, but a wider angle than the finished product is often filmed. What if the plot-important prop was half out of the shot? You don't redo the shot, you change the framing so it's shifted over a bit. Fun, trivia, when Back to the Future came out on DVD for the first time, they hosed up with the transfers from film to digital and the framing was wrong.

Huh. I always knew there was usually something beyond what we're shown on video, but I always thought the theaters got a final cut of things, and that the film itself was blocked that way and had nothing to do with projection setup. I never knew!

It would almost definitely get to the projectionist like that in older cinemas. Digital totally changed that, though, and projectionists have a lot fewer responsibilities. Some of those 70mm screenings of The Hateful Eight actually got screwed up by projection issues, though not as bad as the showing of Night at the Museum that Travis described.

When I saw Jackie Brown the night it came out there were boom mics in so many shots I thought it was a plot point until I watched it on video years later.

Somewhat relatedly, apparently Malcom in the Middle on Netflix uses a widescreen version of the show that wasn't meant to air regularly, so there's stuff off in the edges constantly that you weren't meant to see: Friends might also have the same issue but I don't have any screencaps of that. edit: flatluigi fucked around with this message at 05:11 on Feb 12, 2016 |
