I thought I was doing really well in my first playthrough but the avatar project is halfway done and I'm just now finding I need to build a resistance comms center in order to make contact to attack a facility. Things are by no means unsalvageable but learning by doing is proving to be a bit of a rollercoaster.

Has anybody seen Vahlen yet? I'm kind of holding out hope she sold us out for ADVENT and is offscreen yelling at the troopers every time they use explosives against me.

The reason you could be so cautious in EU was because the aliens were purposely holding back/it was all a simulation

I like to think the sectoids were still young in EU and now they are older and developed.

So... mediocre.
Retaliation mission marked as 'very hard' (or something similar), so I bring my all star team out to play.

I'm engaging an Officer/Shieldbearer/Heavy Lancer/Heavy Lancer pod, when a second pod of a Berserker/Muton/Muton paths into us. Hurray!
I start to fall back, and trigger a Viper/Sectoid/Sectoid pod out of the area where my battle scanner was. gently caress. Time to evac.
Desperately try to break LOS.... and sigh of course that civilian is a Faceless.

Anyway, now I don't have an A-team anymore.

The fps wasn't that bad, its basically a mass effect combat clone if you like that combat.

So... what am I missing, or are you supposed to be pushing 100% clearing and building nothing but power relays and radios, early on? Because it seems like if you don't- even on easy- every facility will be placed too far away from you to get to in a reasonable time frame. I've literally missed multiple supply drops because I keep sprinting from one corner of the world to desperately try to contact one region so I can contact a second region so I can contact a third region which will then, after several weeks 100% focused effort, let me attack the first facility. By which point the second facility has popped up two regions beyond my frontier too. So I am nothing but picking up enough engineers to build things quickly enough to keep the avatar timer from hitting full throttle, and I still can't do it. Ain't got time for retaliation missions. Ain't got time to... really do anything.

Even on easy, this game is stressful-hard, and not fun-hard like the first one was. :(

Edit: Oh. Y'all are upset that the game's too easy, I read. Um. I'll show myself out. :(

Advent come in multiple "levels" so you probably just are fighting the lvl 2 guys now?

Exposure posted:

With default values, Commander is still somewhat cheating for you. It's still nudging pods away from you once you get in a big enough fight and surprisingly enough, it still has part of the background aim adjuster active when you miss enough shots.
Note that the 2 games have some different base design and some of this shouldn't really be taken as the game cheating for you. Think of it most as trying to prevent the worst of the unavoidable :xcom: situations. Pod nudging especially, now that pods don't teleport between spawns that's probably what keeps them spread out so you don't have all the aliens in one spot. With mission timers camping the objective can be kinda unwinnable.

Though I am pretty surprised by the miss streak aim bonus being in Commander. I wish they hadn't done that, it's kinda exploitable.

You're stressing out about contacting regions too much. Research some guns, some armor, don't over-extend yourself, don't move things too fast. The Avatar Project timer isn't a hard-stop. When it maxes out, you'll have a little while to attack a Blacksite and bump it back down.

They're not there to freak you out (though tension is definitely part of it), they're there so that you don't literally forget that there's something about to lose you the game. When all the pips fill up, you'll have a couple weeks to actually engage the next site. I'm two pips from full on the timer, and I have yet to actually do the first Blacksite. :v:

I also have full gauss/mag weapons, just started building my Psi lab, and finished my second experimental ammo and started my second experimental grenade project. Talon and Dragon rounds, and gas grenades. Haven't even built a Skulljack yet!

Good to know I wasn't loving up by the numbers as much as I thought with letting the Avatar project advance that far. My Avatar progress bar was one pip from completing when I finally, finally got the communications necessary to expand past the initial three sectors. :v:

I did notice that there's a couple of hidden ways to reduce the Avatar project progress as well. Dealing with the super happy funtimes that happen when you first Skulljack an officer will chop a pip off the bar.

Pretty much! I just linked up all of Africa, and it's annoying, because I got "All In" as the continent bonus but one of the dark events is to cut supplies by half. :argh: Haven't even tried building the satellite uplink analogue to expand into Western Europe to blow up the nearest research place.
