got caught by a ufo and shot down. that mission is beyond tedious and goes on forever if you get unlucky shots and they pull infinite reinforcements. only just got out of that loving mission after losing 4 vet soldiers. can already tell I want to just cheese poo poo and opt for 8man squad at this point if only because so many bad-luck events turn into very tedious and tiresome stuff.

So my Avatar project pips are almost full, roughly how long is the timer after the last one is filled? until the end of the month, next month?

I'm a couple of territories away from the next project site and need to get some more comms online first. :(

Really enjoying this - I will recommend you unlock the GTS and Predator Armour before June like I did though, they make things much easier :downs:

Thing about a plan is it has to take into account the situation and not be some kind of idiot sperg "aha they fell into my trap" exercise where you advance 2 spaces a turn forever and overwatch (which was never even a very good way to play EU/EW).

Doesn't affect my opinion of the game at all just wondered if this is a known issue with optimisation etc etc, might be sorted by new drivers or patches.

I have a 980 Ti as well and I've turned it down to FXAA and that's getting me pretty great FPS. 8x MSAA is completely ridiculous unless you're rocking a 720p 40inch TV as a monitor.

It was my understanding that the latest versions of Unreal Engine don't even support MSAA out of the box, so I'm not surprised that they're implementation is crap. It's kinda stupid that the game defaults to maxing out MSAA on higher settings though, it's been pretty common to have Ultra/Max settings not jack AA up to stupid levels that don't make any visual difference anyways.

*edit* Just checked, I'm running between 100-140fps depending on situation.

The point is that it takes away choices from the player and enforces one type of playstyle.

If people want to turtle, they should be able to turtle, at the expense of things like elerium containers that disappear after a certain number of turns.

The developers should encourage certain playstyles using rewards and incentives, rather than punishments. Positive reinforcement > negative reinforcement.

I'm only like 2 months in but the only time a timer almost lost me the mission was when my Ranger straight up refused to do 6 damage during a mission and almost failed to kill the relay mcguffin before time ran out. This was after doing 5 damage and leaving a shock trooper alive at melee range, and getting whacked for her trouble.

Also strange was the time I got strangled for two damage, having the +1 health item, and that person ending up gravely wounded at the end of the mission. From taking 1 point of damage.

Eh I prefer a fun game rather than one that advocates different play styles for their own sake. Your just advocating Meld which did nothing to solve the problem.

Anti-aliasing seems to be a huge bottleneck. I had things chugging like crazy on an SLI 970 setup. Turned down a bunch of stuff. Then I tried setting everything to maximum and only having ant-aliasing set to FXAA. Runs smooth.

That still exists though.

You can either do it like XCOM EW, where grabbing Meld was a joke, because even if you grabbed maybe 1/8th of the "safe" Meld and nothing else, you'd still be swimming in it by the endgame. Or you could make it so you HAVE to get the Meld/Elerium/whatever or you loving lose mid/lategame.

The first option doesn't work because it makes it a nonentity outside of stupid players, and even then it's only a carrot upfront. The second option doesn't work because you lategame gently caress people for not knowing what your intention was in terms of how much x resources needed.

While the mission timers initially seem really terrifying, they kind of aren't. Maybe 15% of the missions ( maybe less, I haven't seen another since the tutorial ) lead to a full squad wipe if you fail. The next 30% lead to your squad getting captured if they don't extract by the end, but they are given an EXTREMELY long amount of time to extract if they gently caress up getting the objective, the only problem is getting the objective AND extracting. The next 55% of missions just give you a loving call in Skyranger whenever you want, so if things go south/you get the objective you can just loving leave whenever/get your squad out.

And even if you gently caress up/lose to the timer, it just opens up missions to go rescue your squad again.

optimized like poo poo on a good amount of machines, same bullshit RNG but hey it's xcom, when it's good it's great. when it's frustrating it's really unfun. But you can easily mod whatever you want so you can go crazy with your own playstyle if you can run this.

:xcom:

for the record I've never ever had a problem with the 12 to 8 turn limits. the difficulty comes from reinforcements in non-timed missions, if anything. Those tend to be the ones that are infinite.

i know right time pressure is the craziest thing to put in a tactical simulator, no military force has ever needed to do things in a hurry

like in the invasion of normandy at omaha beach when Norman Cota famously said "well god drat it then Rangers, hunker down and overwatch for the next 5 turns!"

or at little round top at Gettysburg, when Chamberlain's 20th Maine flanked the enemy using a 6 hour sequence of 1-square moves forward, which successfully avoided activating any confederate sectoids until their snipers had taken high ground with good LOS

The game and pretty much all of its new mechanics are designed around there being some time limits.

Heavies fire grenades more or less a move-and-a-throw away. Your Support class can do all kinds of things within visual range rather than having to walk up to your guys/hackable objects and baddies, so you can keep moving or shooting without having to give up extra time to patch people up. Your Assault equivalent has a huge sword/powersword thing which they can use after dashing (and Run'n'Gun still exists, too). Even your Snipers can keep up pretty well with the squad and dish out damage with their pistols and equipment.

Even stuff like Concealment is done with advancing across the map in mind.

If there were 8-12 turn time limits in EU/W maps I think people would be right to be a bit hosed off, but the maps are a touch smaller and your squads are specifically designed around it.

Oh god, not again.

Something interesting.

After starting 10 or so times to try to get europe as a starting area I was wondering if it was possible.

Looking under defaultgamedata.ini there is the following:

PossibleStartingRegions="WorldRegion_EastNA"
PossibleStartingRegions="WorldRegion_WestNA"
PossibleStartingRegions="WorldRegion_SouthNA"
PossibleStartingRegions="WorldRegion_NorthAF"
PossibleStartingRegions="WorldRegion_EastAF"
PossibleStartingRegions="WorldRegion_SouthAF"
PossibleStartingRegions="WorldRegion_EastAS"
PossibleStartingRegions="WorldRegion_WestAS"
PossibleStartingRegions="WorldRegion_NorthAS"
PossibleStartingRegions="WorldRegion_SouthAS"

Europe is not set. Any idea for why this is?

Does something important happen in Europe later in the game?
