Wait, is Star Citizen working on a patcher now? As for the rest, tons of rework. Nothing finished ever.

This Month at CIG "Maybe we should like... plan some of this stuff out?" "Oh gently caress, Chris is coming down to the artist cells. Rob you've been working on an escape pod or something, right? Sorry but you've been nominated as the Chrisbait. Show it to him so the rest of us don't have to delete everything we've accomplished this month to start over with more fidelity."

Holy poo poo. An industry standard patcher, and they use phrases like "we came up with" and the obligatory "we believe in it." Keep your eyes to the stars, Star Citizen. Backers, your godlike company just caught up with one of the earliest concepts in PC software.

so has anyone else been using this fly free weekend to create a fake account and then just downloading the game, deleting the files and repeating over and over? well I have. gigabit fiber, no bandwidth cap, and a vsphere server to do this over and over again. they may have denied my refund so I'll make them pay in bandwidth eventually.

Star Citizen is a good way to become un-jaded about other PC games. During this continuing saga, I got bored and grabbed what many would consider to be a mediocre game: Dead Space 3. Let's see how it stacked up, and how comparing it to SC made an otherwise forgettable game enjoyable. - Origin. In the past, I would not have considered installing that on my system. However, recent iterations have made it far more lightweight and unobtrusive. It has a very fast download and patching system as well, which makes it superior to SC's launcher. Suddenly it seemed the lesser of 2 evils. Point: EA - Cutscenes. Fairly generic. Voice acting not particularly bad, story rather generic, no plot twists to speak of. A couple of gripping moments with side-characters. Nothing made me actively wince, which places it light-years ahead of anything Chris is capable of. Point: EA - Stability. Game is a rock. I could play for hours straight. Zero crashes or lockups. Very low system requirements, was able to play with multiple other programs open at the same time, and alt-tabbing out constantly, which never compromised the stability of the game. In fact alt-tab auto-pauses as well. This is not even in the same pack with SC. Point: EA - Gameplay. Same as the previous 2 games. Crafting your own weapons was a very nice touch - didn't realize how important it would be until doggedly sticking to my early weapons almost placed me in a state where I could not progress. The ability to choose everything about your guns is something I haven't seen before in a game, would be nice to see more games do this. Totally personalizes your FPS experience. Shotgun weapons do not crash the server. Point: EA - EVA. The ability to attach magboots to surfaces lets you seamlessly toggle between free-floating in zero-g, and walking on a flat surface. Limited oxygen reserves add tension. EVA may be the only part of SC that feels right, but this does it better. You don't have to walk off a ledge to engage it. So close, but sorry SC... Point: EA - Music. I liked some of it - brooding opening credits theme reminiscent of something I could not place. In contrast: the only music SC had crashed the launcher, so it was removed. Point: EA - Graphics. Honestly they were about the same. Dead Space 3 was a bit blurrier overall, and far too dark in many places, despite that being the design. Just as many immersion animations. Star Citizen is sharper overall and makes for better screenshots. However, no head bob or motion blur in Dead Space, so point goes to EA. I guess Chris Roberts is going to save PC gaming after all, by making us better appreciate everything else we already have. Scruffpuff fucked around with this message at 08:48 on Feb 6, 2016 |
