Hey! More XCOM at second-to-highest difficulty! Turns out it's actually pretty hard. We failed a mission pretty hard. Pleasure, our highest ranked soldier, got killed and GuavaMoment got mind controlled and captured. Even worse is we've lost income! We're going to have to recover, can't afford another loss like this. Stream is starting now? Right now: https://www.twitch.tv/tinyturtlesa/

Discussion time, folks! Let's talk about boss fights and repetition. When I''m not streaming I'm often prepared to spend a very long time throwing myself into a boss fight (You don't want to know how long it took me to beat the Shadows of Old Yharnam solo). When I am streaming I'll try a few times then if possible move on to another part of the game or do something to make the boss fight easier, but I was wondering what viewers actually want. Unless they really hate the streamer (e.g. Most of DSP's viewers I guess) I'm hoping they want the streamer to be having fun too, and aren't going to begrudge someone making a fight easier or just giving up on it, if it means that the stream continues. The reason I do it is because, based on my viewing experience, it can be both boring and frustrating watching someone making the same mistakes over and over - it's interesting to watch someone fail a few times when they're discovering new and interesting mistakes to make, but after that it just gets frustrating. My main issue as a player with stuff like boss fights is that whilst I can see exactly what to do, I often don't have the physical ability to do it - especially not on superfast games, so after I've discovered all the mistakes to make it just gets frustrating because I can't stop making them, and I get into a negative feedback loop with viewers who're just trying to be helpful, but are telling me things I already know - I try not to do this, but I know I do. tl;dr - do you, as viewers, prefer to watch a streamer try and try again until they succeed regardless of how long it takes, or use game-allowed methods of making something easier? (I'm not talking about cheating, just game allowed things. And no, turning the difficulty down isn't cheating if the game allows you to do it game)

To that question I am torn. On one hand it isn't fun seeing someone get madder and madder at a game as they fail yet again for the nth time. On the other hand definitely would like to see the moment of success after seeing failures for however long. As for game allowed methods for making things easier. If someone played a game 75% through on hard I would be sad if they switched it down to very very easy for the rest of the game. One difficulty down for one boss? After 10 attempts over a number of runs yeah move on.

I prefer watching streamers that are enjoying themselves. Or at least ones that can take some teasing when they get salty. For changing difficulty or in-game cheesing? Whatever makes them happy and an enjoyable streamer to watch. This butts up against a different subject, which I guess I have a weird opinion on; spoiling/hints. It gets to the point where you just want to tell them the ONE thing that will make their life easier. That's the part where it gets to be "ugh, this guy is banging his head against a wall and noone can save him because of his rules, I'm... gonna go." Obviously, spoiling the story / major poo poo would be different and a jackass move, but still. It's a weird streaming thing. I really don't think, if you're broadcasting live on the internet with a public chatroom, that you should try to impose a "hey don't tell me things" rule, nor have your mods go full-boner to save you from spoilers. At the least you're not looking at the chat, which should be the entire point of streaming -- community interaction. If you want no spoilers, try playing offline. On hard bosses or whatnot: as long as the streamer and the chat are having a good time, let it fly - go nuts on how long it takes to kill someone. Once it starts getting old, though, do what you need to to keep the stream rolling. Streams aren't LP's - there's no skipping ahead for people when things get slow, so you should take charge to help things be interesting if necessary. As for spoilers, I would preferred not get spoilered on something until I've had an honest chance to find it. If I pass by a key room ten times or forget to talk to someone pivotal and it's obvious that I'm clueless, feel free to clue me in. Point blank saying "talk to that dude" as soon as I enter a room is irritating - let people play and learn, that's generally why people watch streams in the first place.

I try to act when streaming how I feel when watching. So I usually just ask anyone watching for hints if I can't figure something out after a little bit. Makes it feel like a team effort too. Unless it's literally a puzzle game in which case I might want to keep at it on my own for a while. I'll also usually include hints as to whether it's a for funsies stream or an effort thing by including something about the difficulty I play on and such in the stream title or in the channel information. Sometimes I wanna watch someone do something harder than I would do, and sometimes I just wanna see the game played through without much repetition. And sometimes, I just wanna watch someone bang their head against a wall until they bleed to death playing I Wanna Be the Guy or something like that. If execution barriers are a problem and you think people are getting tired of it, maybe just ask? With that said, I mostly just end up streaming for friends and hanging out with them to do a thing together, and I generally don't have too much of an issue with execution barriers being a huge holdup on the difficulties I pick, so YMMV. I'm not trying to make a living streaming or anything like that. Kylra fucked around with this message at 18:08 on Feb 7, 2016 |
