Said fleeing white people then blame the entire thing on black people because they are obviously the reason the US auto industry hosed Flint/Detroit/etc. into the ground.

Tea-party shitheads who vote red despite guzzling auto union dick have the nerve to bitch about Obama, despite him bailing their failing industry out. I work in the a bastion of left wing politics, a California community college, and even we have a weird political divide. Full time classified/faculty/management have health/dental/vision benefits, adjunct faculty/part time classified do not. Ever since the ACA kicked in and increasingly so with higher fines per year, the part timers are increasingly more right wing because health care is no longer a choice and many make over what would be taken care of by covered CA. It's a serious mind gently caress to watch in action as they come to terms with their new found thinking that maybe there is a middle ground to be struck.

Unfortunately, most other people in both directions still have their heads up their asses and believe in the too big to fail philosophy and hemorrhage cash. Fun fact, at 1 time we had a 12 million dollar surplus then economy went south and places with surplus funds were forced to distribute their surplus funds to other places that didn't know how to handle money.. Ours went to UC Berkeley. Congrats Berkeley, you were the largest poo poo lords with the worst money handling abilities, maaaaaaan!

This a million times. Older people and most of the right-wing millennials refused to move to Detroit because it was 87% black, then all the hipsters from New York and Portland started moving downtown and making it a cool place, so the rent has been skyrocketing and pushing the low income black families out to Pontiac.

Pretty much everyone complains about the large Yemeni/Lebanese/Arab Muslim community in Dearborn and will say poo poo even about the christian Chaldean people in Macomb (Saudi Heights, Mostly Chaldean College, etc). They're all kind and peaceful people, but people get hung up on the fact that many of them still do Old World stuff like haggle or whatever and it just makes things worse

Madison Heights/Warren/Clinton Twp./St. Clair Shores "used to be nice before 2009, before all the foreclosures made it possible for those people to be able to own their own home" and since then a shitload of the white people that lived there have been moving farther north to Rochester Hills or ironically to Royal Oak/Ferndale which are basically Hip Detroit Lite cities

A lot of people don't want to live in Oak Park/Bloomfield Hills because it's where most of the area's Jews live, and apparently antisemitism still is a thing

Thankfully that means most of the Boomers live in the same areas and most of the younger people/Millennials live in the same areas, but yeah holy poo poo is this one of the most racially divided places I've ever lived. As it is said

Oh I'm absolutely sure that they do and I'm sure that statement was an over-generalization, but the big things I noticed when I spent time down south for the first time a couple years ago is how many more mixed race couples I saw compared to up here, and how many more black people I saw in the same area as all the waspy whites in the areas we were in. That could also just be because there is a greater concentration of blacks down south compared to whites, but I honestly have no idea and I'm not going to pretend that I do

It is funny that is still going on. In the mid-70's my dad went to Michigan for law school but he was from Davis, CA where that hasn't been a thing since ever (as it a California college town). He was quasi-Catholic (which would have also been a big deal a decade before) but our last name is often considered Jewish last name even though it is just German. In any event, he applied to a bunch of law firms in Detroit, but only really got traction with all-Jewish firms for that reason. He wasn't aware that these were Jewish firms as that just isn't a thing in CA. So he gets hired by a firm, and they find out he's a gentile when he shows up on Rosh Hashanah or something.
They then wanted him to join all the clubs they couldn't join to find out what happened there (and networking). None of the clubs would take him because of the firm he worked at, even with a baptismal certificate. I can't believe that poo poo is still going on in 2000 and loving 16.

Until I worked at the high-end mall in the area, it never even occurred to me that people might think that I'm Jewish based on my last name since I'm ginger, but apparently in Russia/Eastern Europe it's a stereotype that Jews are ginger. I think a lot of the older people have certain antisemitic feelings simply because of the stuff like you described from the 70's, but more people notice it and care more about the Arabs that do similar stuff (owning all the local party stores, most of the MD's in the area being Arabic, in general a good portion of the Arabic-speaking peoples here are much better off than the whites, similar to the Jewish community) because THOSE GOD drat TERRORISTS

So, their income will be roughly the same (working 20 hours instead of 40) as it was before.

Just this past week, I offered a guy at our office a promotion that would have put him managing 3 other guys, would have been a triple pay increase plus arguably one of the best benefits packages available anywhere. He worked part time, couple three days a week. He would have gone from making just shy of 20,000 a year to almost 60,000 with 401K (with company match), a pension plan, profit sharing, BCBS family coverage (250/500 max yearly deductible) that cost 187.50 a month, and a company loving TRUCK (F-150) that he could use as his personal vehicle as well at zero cost (insurance, gas, maintenance, repairs). He would get a new one every three years or if the mileage went over 80K. Automatic two weeks vacation plus a week of personal/sick days. After three years it goes to 3/1, eventually capping out at 7 weeks vacation/1 week personal/sick. Life changing money and benefits for this guy and his family.

All thing considered, close to $100,000 a year worth of salary and benefits.

He turned it down because he and his family would lose their welfare benefits.

I immediately began rethinking the 'sharp as a tack' opinion and almost fired his rear end on the spot. But it occurs to me that while many on the welfare system know the tricks and abuse it, some are institutionalized to it and couldn't handle life without. But he knew how many hours he needed to work and stay under the cap. He would work extra if needed, but always said 'Boss, need you to adjust my timesheet' when he did or simply not clock in. So what do I do here? He's sharp, he's good at his job, and the guys he works with respond well to him. He's a 6'4 bald black dude with tatted up arms the size of an oak tree, but dude is an honest to goodness teddy bear. I think that that may be a very rare instance, because Welfare Kings/Queens are not nearly as common as many conservatives seem to think they are

Yeah, the guy in Tide's story is a giant idiot, and he deffo should not have told him that was the reason why he couldn't take it (position it as I need to work less to take care of the kids/my sick parent/sling drugs) but he does not represent everyone on the dole and I can guarantee you that 99% of other welfare recipients would have jumped on that gig

that's not getting into the fact that many dole recipients are PoC that do not have the opportunities or privileges of the whites on the dole who could better their situation

for instance last year I was on the dole, but then i got an internship on top of my retail job and ended up making a shitload of money that I stuck into savings. it worked out super well so

poo poo, I make more than that guy does AND I have already started establishing my 401k (well 403b) and I'd still jump the gently caress all over that.
