I have just experienced the glory of successfully hacking a Sectopod, and finishing the mission with it still under my control... and thus not having to kill it. This is a wonderful day.

Turrets, hacked and mind controlled enemies all arent counted towards the neutralize everyone count. Bradford really wanted me to bring along my hacked mecs onto the avenger before taking off tho.

Fangz posted:Nope. Dude, I've played this game. They absolutely will follow you in concealment 100% for sure. I have used it to stack up 6 pods at once in a corner of the map several times by wedging my whole squad in the corner and waiting. Every pod from the map eventually makes its way over and bounces around off each other trying to path toward me but they wont ever close the last little bit of distance if I have the cover set up properly. It's quite comical. Not super useful other than to drag them away from an objective so you can get between every pod and the target if the evac is also on that side of the map but it's funny.

Soooo I just tried doing a hack the terminal objective. Apart from the bullshit walking into a sight zone at exactly max range, while the aliens were exactly in cover so the only place you could see them from was that single square that would trigger them; I got to the terminal with a soldier who I was ready to sacrifice for the hack..... aaaaaaaand the option to hack wasn't there for some reason. Standing on the green star and everything and no loving option to hack. I restarted my game cause gently caress that. Also is there a way to see what stats poo poo like Disoriented is effecting? There isn't an I can see like in the first game. Gridlocked fucked around with this message at 10:20 on Feb 9, 2016 |

Shots to take: Enemy's cover blown up by grenadier, or enemy flanked, or free overwatch shots when enemy pod discovers you/you ambush them, or bullshit special abilities. Two days ago my highest-ranking officer sobbing in a bush two steps away from the Avenger's plateau was saved by four connecting shots, with chances ranging from 23% to 39%. Something ridiculously unlucky is probably already waiting for me today, because there is no way I should get away with poo poo like that.

Flanking an enemy is often a trap too. You dash ahead trying to get a 90% shot in, then you activate three more enemies and die to those. If there isn't a realistic chance for that 50% to hit enemy to kill one of your dudes in the next turn it's probably saver to plink away at each other from range...

Only played through the tutorial so I wouldn't know yet, but can you still just endlessly overwatch as soon as a mission starts to eventually kill all the aliens without moving at all, or has the dynamic changed enough that the aliens won't be patrolling the map anymore?

A lot of missions have timers on them that force some forward momentum. Also they don't patrol as far as usual, but you can use concealment and scouts to go find them to set up an overwatch trap.

So, just started my third attempt at Commander difficulty. First one was kind of a reckless learning experiment and second one failed due to strategic tardiness. Had my first VIP extraction on this run right now and holy poo poo I never had a mission go this completely flawless. Went in with a Ranger, Sharpshooter and Specialist at Squaddie rank and a Rookie. The team kills a turret right on turn 1 because it's exactly between them and the VIP prison. They roll forward, activate a pod of a Pectoid and a single ADVENT trooper. ADVENT catches a sniper shot through the head. Pectoid... takes cover behind a gas pump. Oops. Rookie blows the pump. Team advances Next pod is two ADVENT soldiers. They both take cover behind a single car. I grenade the car with the Rookie and set up overwatch with everyone else. Ranger triggers overwatch on one of them, misses him... and hits and detonates the burning car, blowing both of em to bits. The team advances further, kills another turret and gets to the VIP. Reinforcement drop comes in. 2 ADVENT troopers and an officer, they jump right into a dropzone overwatch ambush. One trooper survives and a pod of another trooper and a Pectoid patrols in. Another car with one ADVENT behind and the Pectoid's cover get naded, everyone gets flashbanged and the Pectoid gets shot up.The disoriented ADVENT doesn't move out from behind the burning car and blows up while the last one flubs his shot, then gets flanked by the Sharpshooter and shot to 1 health remaining before the Ranger comes over and puts him to the sword. Evac site is reached three turns before the time limit is up with all enemies dead, nobody injured, and an extra loot container grabbed in the prison. Now I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. Becuase after somethign lke this, I just know that there's gonna be a moment any minute now.

Just finished the campaign and I gotta say, I was pretty pumped when the ending turned into an anime with a power level battle. MVP goes to my ranger with +crit +mag that just double tapped everything that it could run up to. I never have actually seen an Avatar attack. I've only seen a single mind control action, which I instantly nullified with my psibro.

If you don't commit and do another action the game re-rolls the next time you initiate a hack attempt, I'll try to test this myself and report back.

I really love that when you Mind Control an alien, all the other aliens run into melee range to punch it so your Grenadiers can once again murder every alien on the map in one turn.

By the way, am I misunderstanding this or is there not that much of a downside to blowing up enemies this time? There's no weapon fragments anymore and all you seem to lose is something like a 10% chance at a weapon mod that's most likely poo poo anyway (looking at you, Repeaters).Mordaedil posted:Has anyone actually hacked anything in this game? I mean, on less than 100%? Plenty. I always hack the towers if there's no time limit. If they trigger reinforcements you can overwatch-murder them anyway. If you EMP grenade a Sectopod the chance to take it over goes over 50% too which is a huge deal if you can do that at the start of a mission. peak debt fucked around with this message at 11:48 on Feb 9, 2016 |

Hacking seems like kind of a crapshoot. The percentages are low and the downsides seem like a massive deterrent to trying. Who wants to have another pod dropped on them or to alert every nearby alien?
