Bitraider is less work for their content servers, so it's preferable for them.

It's not.

BitRaider, despite the "Bit" in it, is wholly unrelated to BitTorrent and is not a peer to peer patching solution. What it does is prescribe a particular format and API that allows clients to partially download minimum required data (i.e.: lower quality assets), allow execution with incomplete data and seamlessly stream in new data as it comes in. Ultimately, their servers still have to deliver the same data, unless the patch happens to be so terrible the player ragequits before it's done streaming in.

It does mean that you only download the patch and not the whole executable that's being patched, right?

You can't really patch executable code on the fly, so the executable is probably the first thing that gets downloaded. There is, after all, a minimum amount you need to download before you can start the game.

That said, BitRaider somehow remains terrible compared to Blizzard or ArenaNet's own versions. :saddowns:

people work themselves into a frothy rage over a very very very tiny amount of actual money.

Never fails. they feel they're entitled to riches and splendor over a minor inconvenience, every single time any game patches and they can't sink their life into it for a tiny amount of time.

Really sad.

Yeah, it makes me think that it wasn't something they could have patched tomorrow night--it had to have been something fairly gamebreaking.

Yeah you can start patching. There might be another small patch to fix the issue if it's not server side, but the main patch is available.

I just want a hypercrate too, I don't really give a poo poo about the KOTFE chapter. It's just an extra perk.

About 18 months ago, I found an extremely critical defect in our code during the release process, entirely by mistake because I did something wrong. It took me close to an hour to figure out exactly what I had done, since it was abnormal and by mistake, at which point everyone got called in and everyone worked 16 hours straight so that we could have the systems back up before the beginning of business on Monday morning.

Summary - poo poo happens, and sometimes you get lucky and notice it *before* the clients, at which point all hands on deck to fix it.

So if my patch download is literally not moving at all, that's because the servers are down or whatever, right? I don't need to cancel and start over? I'm always paranoid about canceling anything SWTOR-related in the middle of a download for fear that I'll have to flatten and reinstall the game or something.

Download servers and game servers aren't the same thing. Download servers are working at the moment - but yeah I'd say just leave it for now!
