Sordins were pretty sweet, I should have got a pair of peltors in a deal with the commo NCO but that fell through. I was thinking those types of headsets would've made their way to the regular infantry by now.

Howard Leights are nice, I've got a few pairs to let friends borrow when I take them shooting, but the higher end Sordins and Peltors are worlds better. You get what you pay for. The Leights just cut out the sound when the mics pick up sound above a certain threshold, while the Peltors and Sordins level out the volume, so you don't stop getting audio whenever things get loud. Also the gel cups for the Sordins are a work of art. They'll even fit decently underneath even issued kevlars. Getting away with wearing them without some staff NCO getting on your case is up to you, though. No experience using the headsets with the comms inputs and boom mics yet (as comms gear, they work just as well as earpro), but they can usually be had for cheaper than the comm-less headsets on arfcom if you want to upgrade to better earpro and don't mind having the mic there.

I think it was in the book Horse Soldiers, but could have been another book about early GWOT era Afghanistan . But the guy is in the middle of a heated firefight and starts to lose hearing, like he's taken overpressure or something, then he reaches up to adjust his earpro and they were flooded solid with sweat. Yum.

Whenever I see "concept" designs for the "soldier of the future" I think of the OICW. And the even more ridiculous getup that was basically a guy in a motorcycle helmet with a gun strapped to his wrist. Or do go back to the 50's/60's with that concept that assumed everyone would be wearing full NBC spacesuits all the time.
