Child support is definitely one of those grey areas where a lot of people (feminists included) think that shady poo poo goes on with it. The most prominent being that courts tend to have an inherent bias toward mothers over fathers in terms of custody and demanding child support payments.

I just want to mention that they don't really teach any of this in sex ed (along with a lot of other things), even in my state where we had not-abstinence sex ed. Pregnancy is really hard on the body and I feel like a lot of people have unrealistic expectations of it. I really wish there were better resources and education for people who want to get pregnant, so they can be semi-prepared for it.

If you look plainly at the number of people who have custody, you see that yes women have it more often. But what everyone who shits themselves over that fact misses is that in the majority of cases women get custody because men don't fight for it (since after all, women are caregivers, right?). In cases where both parents fight over it, it is heavily weighted towards the father, even if he has a history of being abusive to the mother or child.

It's like those cases where a woman gets pregnant, claims guy X is the father, and he finds out a couple of years later he isn't. The woman engaged in fraud, but no judge is going to let the supposed father off the hook because that's what's best for the child. Which makes guys who help lesbian friends have babies without solid legal contracts all the more funny. At least the sad sap in my first example got to have sex before he was stuck with 18 years of child support.

Courts are rough and routinely side with the mother. On top of that, going on and fighting about custody/child support is a giant pain in the rear end. I make a lot more than my son's mother, but I don't begrudge her or the system for having to pay support. I wish I had more control over what she does with that money, but that's not the way things work. There was a time when I could have pursued full custody, but the odds of that working out in my favor were low because nothing was "wrong" with his living arrangements at the time. A lot of guys feel pretty helpless in the matter because there isn't a lot you can do other than pay the money and take whatever visitation you're given. Dealing with the court is time consuming, frustrating, difficult, and expensive.

Courts only grant custody to the mother more often when you include cases where only one parent is asking for custody. When you look at only cases where both ask for custody the father is more likely to get it.

New Hampshire has a crime rate similar to modern-day Germany whereas the murder rate in Louisiana is more like Germany circa 1945. US population in 2013 was 316.5 million, divide by 100,000 to get 3,165. That's a rate of 3.5 murders per 100,000, which would bring us to....#128 on the list. What's impressive is that even the "third in murders" part that makes the US look awful is made up entirely for the picture. Literally every part of that is fictional.

Murder rates for cities: Those numbers are a little misleading also because even in a hell-hole like Chicago, most of the city is relatively safe. So saying there are 15 murders per 100k people - while technically correct, is still not a great indicator of the crime rate. It's probably 1 or 2 murders per 100k for the 50% of people who live in nice areas and 30 per 100k in poor neighborhoods. Which just goes to show how absolutely horrible it is living in those poorer areas and why mixed income housing is so important.
