I've successfully hacked one non-mission critical thing so far, the rest have either failed or have been so low as to not bother.

In this entire campaign, I've never seen a hack hit an optional objective. Not once. Ever. The best part is that it's been remarkably consistent at stopping just below the mark. So I've hacked a bunch of mission-critical 100% things and never, ever gotten an optional bonus, and I've never once succeeded at a non-mission-critical thing.

It's pretty demoralizing because hacking seems kind of cool. I just wonder if there's some sort of campaign seed and I rolled the "you don't get to hack" seed.

Oh okay. I guess if it were once per you'd have hacking stats through the roof. Still, I'd try to hack scanner posts at the very end of a mission just for the shot at it.

Also my kokoro mod wish is for the skulljack accuracy and subsequent hacking difficulty improve as the enemy's hp approaches 0.

Just so I'm absolutely clear, there's no benefit to dragging out an Avenger Defense mission at all? The corpses are left behind?

It also may not actually be true, like many of the things Reddit has divined about the game. I have not tested it for myself, but Always Be Hacking is a good philosophy anyway.

Aside from getting kills to rank up your soldiers (at the pretty severe risk in that sort of mission of getting injured or outright killed), no, there isn't a benefit.

^^^ Aw.

By the way, having done the defense twice now, once with and once without a staffed engineer in the defense room, the turrets you get are substantially better when you have them upgraded. Not to the point that it'd be worth it to tie up an engineer/gremlin in the slot at all times but it's a nice perk to weather the initial storm. They're good for maybe the first three turns or so but once you deal with the nearby aliens they'll never have LOS on anything again.

Yeah, I didn't think so. Being good at hacking does not require you to have successfully hacked anything before, it's just a matter of rank and equipment (like Aim). Your previous failures mean nothing to your future successes, so stop whining about it and just shoot some aliens to get higher level.

What do you do to build turrets and the defense room? I have a feeling I'm going to be defending soon.

Defense Matrix room requires you to have done an autopsy on a turret (though turrets usually only show up in missions you don't get to collect corpses from, so it's hard)

Along those lines it'd be nice to be able to see how long you have until something stops being hacked. Something like "ADVENT Turret is still hacked. (2 turns remaining)"

Is the defense mission a guaranteed thing during the story or is that only if you get caught by a UFO? It sounds like fun but I haven't gotten there yet despite having researched basically everything. I've been rolling the story extremely slowly. I had Tier 3 weapons and armour before I even built the shadow chamber...

Supply train missions are a good source for turret corpses, that's where I've gotten all of mine.

It's random. Even when the event happens, there's still a random chance of your ship dodging it. And it can happen more than once per campaign.

RosaParksOfDip
May 11, 2009
Yeah I've only had a UFO chase me once and we pretty handily dodged it. It seems odd that there's a mission type that you'd never encounter outside RNG.

You don't get corpses or wrecks from missions you evac from, including ones you're forced to evac from, like hostage or avenger defense missions.

Jimbot

Don't bother taking those "defend the [object]" missions. If the enemy hits it once and starts a fire, you're done. If there's no fire you may have a chance but once a fire starts the thing is destroyed a couple turns later. I hope they changed that.

loving unbelievable. VIP extract mission and it puts the evac point on the third floor of a building with the access ladder on the BACK of the building the farthest point away from me. No grenades that can reach it to destroy it either.

I think that research times vs excavate/build times and supply income is a bit off. I currently have t3 weapons and armor researched but still have not built a shadow chamber, psi ops, or a bunch of other stuff because I simply never had the supply for it.

Yeah, it's kind of funny that they're bugging me about needing more scientists when I've literally researched everything and just need the supplies to actually build them.

Yeah, it sucks. :( I kept wondering why I didn't get the andromedon autopsy unlocked until I realized what's going on. The debriefing screen tells you this but your eyes skip over it.

You do get the XP though, so stalling the Avenger Defense mission is a good idea if you want to grind out kills.

How my last game went :

Was doing pretty good, no issues for a while. Got upgraded armor but still using standard weapons. Decided what the gently caress, I'd try to do the first council blacksite mission. (Stealing the vial of yellow goo)

Hoooooooooly poo poo was that rough. All my squad survived but they were all gravely wounded.

Several days later there's a retaliation mission. I lose 4 of the rookies I sent in to the area. Then the Avatar counter goes up two points. I'm swearing at the game for bullshit. Suddenly alarms, a UFO is chasing us, there's explosions everywhere, we've been EMP'ed. We land and have to take out an EMP tower thing to escape. I have like four low-level snipers who take up positions at the ramp. Every time an alien pokes his head out snipers rain down fire on him, which isn't nearly as effective as it sounds because they all have horrible aim. Was hilarious as gently caress watching alien berserkers appear, enrage, go nuts on their own team, and get perforated isntantly.

Still things are way too hot, my assault tries to get LOS on the target so we can squadsnipe it but the second he gets sight on it THREE loving GROUPS of aliens aggro on him and they turn him into paste. Two more rookies try to do the same but die. I am overwhelmed by infinite respawns.

I had so much fun but i was raging so hard. I think I'm going back to my EU/EW practice of not doing the alien base until I have T3 weapons/armor.

What's this about autopsying a turret? I've killed several turrets, I have no more research left to do, and I don't have an option to build a defense room. only rooms I can build right now are power and comms because I've built everything else available.

Oh I see! This must be the Bad Opinion Zone!
A blademaster ranger isn't really about competing for damage with a rapid fire shotgunner who's chosen to use run and gun that turn. It's more about having conceal, cutting up the occasional mook when it's safe to conserve ammo/move up, and the insane mobility that comes out of triggering reaper, double move killing someone, proc implacable/untouchable, then single move and then shotgunning someone in the face.

If you've lost count, that's a three move run and gun with a free kill thrown in.

At this point my Rangers should just hand their swords to the Specialists. I remember a single time this campaign one of the Advent guys dodged out of having his skull impaled. Clearly, my Specialists are the real melee specialists.

Lotish posted:

Supply train missions can have a turret on the far end of the map on one of the train cars that doesn't count for 'kill all enemies', but those missions let you retrieve all the loot for sure. But if you don't activate the turret's pod it just gets ignored and the mission ends.

Uhhhh... gently caress my bronzeman run, that's a reload. I lose my entire squad if I don't get to the bullshit evac point that takes 4 full turns of sprinting to reach on top of a building. Can't call a skyranger, finagling a grenade hit from below and sacrificing one trooper won't work either because the backup evac point is placed even farther away. Pure bullshit.

What's really infuriating is I expected it to take a bit longer to reach the top as soon as I saw the evac point, so I rushed a bit harder than usual to get there, but it still took longer than that to just loving walk up to the point. Absurd.
