Met my first Andromedon thingy. It, um, ended badly. Half my squad is severely wounded, and one of my two high ranked grenadiers died.

Internet Kraken posted:I'd never take salvo on the other hand. A guaranteed shot is way to useful for shredding enemies like gatekeepers. Being able to fire two explosives in one turn is nice but you can only do that what, once per mission since you'll be out of grenades anyways. With Salvo you can fire a grenade and then shoot/chain shot/rupture/whatever, you don't need to shoot grenades with the second action. It also works with heavy weapons, and powered heavy weapons are brutally, game-changingly powerful.

Starting my second Ironman Commander attempt after the first one went south, this one is going way better and I've decided to kick it oldschool and rush laser research (mag weapons, whatever) and the game has already given me two scientists to accommodate this lofty goal. Once I'm done researching those and discover I can't build them for whatever reason I can attempt to catch up on the plot research and probably fail catastrophically. Also had my first Flawless rank mission, slowly getting the hang of things again. Really need a Specialist to spend more than one mission out in the field though, I can't get a feel for what they do very well because they're always dying.

I was doing my first UFO mission, fairly far into it. My psy-op dominated a Muton, and that turn I got the "shut down the beacon or the aliens show up" message, so I walked the Muton over to it thinking he'd be able to press the button. He couldn't, but it turns out dropping a grenade on himself does a pretty good job of shutting it down!

Man, Legend is just relentless Aliens seem to show up at normal times but you can't get mag weapons or tier 2 armor until like month 3 even if you rush it...and the missions are so rough with the extra pod they throw in there. Everyone gets 'gravely wounded' at the slightest damage and I've had probably 30 soldier deaths total playing xcom and never seen a single bleed out timer. High on my list of things to mod are: - flashbang reduces crit by a lot. currently doesn't affect crit at all - smoke radius increased a bit...right now smoke really, really sucks - increase bleed out chance to xcom 1 levels - slightly increase shotgun range penalty so that it isn't only -10 aim at max range - massively increase close range bonus so that adjacent tile flanking shots are 100% chance to hit

I kinda don't get the point of the Andromedon. Why did the aliens make it? The suit works just fine as an enforcer.

The plasma pistol design reminds me of this: I'd be 110% happy having the T1 revolver just shooting plasma.

The Andromedon is the Kool Aid Man and will accept nothing less. Busting through walls with a 4 armor meat bag will never not be awesome. (Though I'm thinking I'll have to prevent myself using domination on psy ops to avoid trivializing them.)

Getting rid of enemy armor is much more frequently useful than reducing explosion damage; enemies really don't use explosives all that often, in my experience. Plus, Shred's armor reduction increases with tech level. Plasma heavies shred 3 armor a hit.

khy posted:Shredder vs Blast Padding is super difficult to decide. They're both just so very, very good. Really? I'd value the ability to shred an increasing amount of armor at-will more than the ability to take one fewer points of damage- the endgame in particular has an abundance of things with armor and being able to shred that armor with minimal explosives means you can kill enemies that much faster and prevent them from shooting you. Blast padding is more noticeable in the start of the game, but it's still difficult to build a dedicated tank unit since getting damaged means taking wounds and sitting out the next mission.

khy posted:Shredder vs Blast Padding is super difficult to decide. They're both just so very, very good. Blast Padding hands down for the early game. That point of armor can make a difference of several days in the hospital, and Mutons are jerks with those grenades. Retrain late game for shredder. The AWC is the greatest thing. Also the AWC is so crucial to the early game that I find it hard to imagine any build order except GTS -> AWC -> Power -> whatever. Getting troops back in half the time is the only way for me to build up a murder squad faster than the aliens get dangerous. E: I stand by Blast Padding early game. When things start getting armor you just lob more grenades at them. Use a phantom ranger to open every engagement with a grenade to the face, prioritize the Muton autopsy to get the Plasma grenade Proving Grounds project.

God drat does a maxed out specialist feel good. The combination of reaction fire overwatch from aid protocol + hacking the planet + skulljacking bros 24/7 and pulling sweet loot out of their brains makes them feel like total badasses. When you get the right AWC perks you can sort of break the game in amazing ways. My specialist (with guardian) and grenadier both got killzone. Running it out absolutely ruins anything that isn't an andromedon/gatekeeper or sectopod. It breaks the overwatch camera by the way, it's kind of hilarious.

I might have just screwed myself. I was delaying doing a facility to reset the avatar clock until a supply drop hit so I could upgrade the rest of my weapons to T3, but got a retaliation mission with 4:30:00 left, right after i finished grabbing the supply drop. I have to finish the retaliation mission with as minimal casualties as I can manage, then immediately fly to Australia to destroy a facility.
