I think Peter Molyneux slipped up in that famous interview by continuing with it. When the first question is "Do you think that you’re a pathological liar?" you should be smart enough to walk away. I don't see Chris Roberts falling for the same thing. Your point about the treatment of employees is good but I sadly think not that many people care, see EA Louse. It also would require people going on the record by name, something that none so far have done and although a bankrupt CIG would make it more likely there's no guarantee how many will speak up.

I just don't see the type of personality that will happily insist on micro managing every aspect of a 260 man game company into delays of years being at all embarrassed about failing, it certainly won't be his fault at all.

It might be different if people get to see the accounts but there's no reason to believe that is certain or even likely.

This is the most baffling thing about the way they defend SC. They genuinely believe that "Chris said it's going to be in the game" is the same thing as "this is in the game and working as intended".
Also whenever the devs are asked about anything concrete they give answers that amount to 'trust us we do this because that's how it's done, you wouldn't understand' as if game development was a magical thing that nobody knows anything about and has only been done by Chris Roberts and everybody buys it (because none of them actually worked in a creative industry). It's the equivalent of a parent telling his 4 year-old children that dad does important adult things at his job and them buying it without needing any further details. It's pretty amazing.

To be clear I mean crowd funding and with the public. I wouldn't be surprised if he finds some other venture to scam, like selling his crowd funding "system" that is apparently so inflexible that minor changes take months to implement. Or maybe he can mooch off of Sandi once her acting career takes off.

Then again nobody lost money underestimating the stupidity of people so maybe he can just do it all over again.

How did he get these people to turn off their brains and follow him straight off the cliff? An old 90s game simply does not go far enough to validate him as a tried-and-true developer in the year 201X. His track record is all the evidence anyone needs to know not to trust this man. There's something else at play here; something I'm missing.

This isn't new. In 2004 Something Awful had an article about gaming catchphrases: http://www.somethingawful.com/comedy-goldmine/game-pr-catchphrases/5/:

Quote: "A compelling new title from the creator of (one game you liked that was made ten years ago)."

Indicates: A gaming god has descended from the heavens to craft a game that's even better than the one that made him famous.

True Meaning: Run. Run fast and hard. Move at night under the cover of darkness, and take whatever rest you can manage during the daylight hours. They purposely forgot to mention the games he created between his masterpiece and now; failures in every sense of the word that sucked because his over inflated ego led him to believe that he could make even the most ambitious and convoluted ideas work.

That article is 12 years old. When it was written, I suspect this was a jab at Peter Molyneaux. Here we are over a decade later, and it's still letter-perfect.

Lead your team in increasingly challenging scenarios -- from harsh jungle environments to severe arctic terrains, unforgiving deserts to dangerous international city streets. Rescue hostages. Escort VIPs to safety. Locate and defuse bombs. A collection of entirely new objectives challenge your ability to think quickly and strategically.”

Indicates: As you fearlessly lead troops into the impossible, you seamlessly gather intelligence and use your weapon (an extension of your will) , to force your erect penis into the gaping maw of terrorism. Lead these elite troops into fierce combat in brutal jungles and deadly arctic environments, through the jawa lands, and into the streets of the France! Rescue scientists, escort the president to his secret base, locate and defuse bombs with only your pubic hair and a rubber band. A collection of new and exciting missions force you to this with a sharp tactical mind, or die in the field.

True Meaning: Single player is incredibly shallow, and is either way too easy, or impossible. In multiplayer, realize that nobody gives a gently caress what you think about the situation, and the best solution is clearly to buy a gun and run full tilt into swarm of enemies, dying in a storm of bullets, while screaming at your team over voice com how much of a human being you really are. Play 5 maps of indeterminable location that look exactly the same. Hope hostages don't get caught on imaginary obstacles! Attempt to lead the VIP only to discover he is AFK, as the enemy team rushes in and makes you into a sheath! Find something vaguely resembling a square sit on it and press a button! However, no matter what you do it's totally wrong in the eyes of your peers, who are always better players than you will ever be.

It's the pursuit of getting 'the perfect game'. People want the game that Chris Roberts envisioned to exist, hell I want it to exist and I'm betting a lot of people in this thread too. I mean, let's be honest here - the last truly great and fully featured AAA+ space game was Freespace 2 and that title was released 17 years ago so there's this crazy craving for a game that would take the genre to the next level and wrap it in crazy good graphics. But that title can't exist, at least not yet and not done by C.R. and according to his unrealistic vision. The thing is that some people refuse to accept that and still hold on to the hope of getting that legendary perfect game.

I just had my first Star Citizen experience today.

I'm doing a report on Economics for uni and decided to make it around Star Citizen and how much of a trainwreck it has become. Decidded to go search their webpage for a press kit I could use with pretty pictures.

I had to try to download the file ten loving times because of some error or another that prompted windows to tell me to contact the site administrator because something was broken.

The icing on the cake was that once I opened it the first folder in the press kit is titled "Chris Roberts". It contains two pictures of him and his bio, in which he is given the title of "Chief Creative Officer".

10/10 fully immersed in the Star Citizen universe.

I doubt it has anything to do with the individual people and more to do with SA in general. SA has that great quality of taking the piss out of whatever is currently up for discussion regardless of any justification, just for the lulz, you know. That's a good way to mitigate tricks your mind will play on you that protect your idea of self but may also let you stay on a bad course for too long. Here, someone will inevitably swoop into a thread about X, hellbent on taking the cheapest, most obvious shot at it. "X is a scam." Having someone being automatically contrarian can make you consider if they're right. Sometimes they will be.
