My Lovely Horse posted:Goddamn, the Luann comment threads are turning on the strip fiercely. quote:I’ve been a reader of this comic strip, with a couple of breaks, since 1995. Back then it was a fairly charming family strip, with no ultra convoluted plots and no storylines that disappeared after a build up never to be heard of again. Even then, though, Evans polled his readership to decide whom Luann should go to the dance with, Aaron Hill or Gunther; but at least he had the artistic integrity to shove Aaron on a metaphorical bus to Hawaii and got rid of him when he no longer was interested in the character. On the other hand, when he got rid of Quill and the “fan base” squealed, he brought him right back, and admitted that he’d brought him back because of the squealing of the “fans”. This is not artistic integrity; this is pandering to the market. That’s why I prefer Brooke McEldowney; he may despise a section of his readers, whom he calls “beefwits”, but he’ll never change his plots to suit their tastes.

Fair enough. I'm just overly cautious having caught myself repeatedly referring to my niece's "christening", when it was actually a ceremony down the local synagogue.

Contrived setup? Yes. But accurate in its own weird way. Sally Forth still did it way, way better, mind you.

Tiggum posted:I find it inexplicable almost all the time. Occasionally I think I have some idea of what they were going for, but even then I'm not sure. Today's for example. What? Janis observes that she and Arlo own a lot of books they aren't likely to read. She then clutches a book to her chest muttering about Satan. I just have no idea where to even begin with that. Satan tempted jesus and his response was "Get thee behind me, satan." However, it I can't work out if she's tempted to throw them out because she never reads them or to buy more books. I'm split on that.

Janis is dusting, and is tempted to start reading books instead. That happens to me pretty much any time I do serious cleaning, because cleaning is boring, so I thought it was relatable and funny.

I really took it as her thinking about getting rid of them. I have so many books it sucks to even think about moving, but I can't bring myself to do it either. Logically, I really should, but I'm always slightly horrified at the thought. I suppose the best art can be related to in different ways by different people and just looks like a picture with no special meaning to many or most.
