Oh HELL yes. I played this on Vita in Japan while I was going through a 'let's try out some otome games' phase and I enjoyed the heck out of it. While the main girl is still sort of a doormat for the guys most of the time at least the petting mini-game system made it feel like she was a little more in control of her relationship with them than most otome game girls.

Good to hear. I like how they are releasing the combined story since a lot of FD never make it overseas :sigh:

I kept thinking it'd be Clock Zero since it looked to be fairly well-known and popular. At least it's not mobile since that'd be terrible unless PSV. Also is it just me or is the base game somewhat high $150k?

The thing with Otome VNs is apparently they really struggle to make a profit in the west. The dedicated audience doesn't seem to make up for the time and cost of localization. They might be trying to preemptively cover themselves perhaps?

Finally got around to finishing all the endings on Steins;Gate. Holy crap. Are there any other (non-Zero Escape) VNs that have as much crazy mind-fuckery and twists?

All the endings were really good other than Faris, since her ending just arbitrarily breaks the established conventions of the setting left and right for the sake of a conclusion.

You should play Ever 17, there's a lot of slog but its really quite good. And Chaos;Head is great at first but really nosedives in quality towards the end.

Higurashi, I guess, it's currently being released (very, very slowly) on Steam

Oh and I just noticed you mentioned ZE but not Danganronpa so try that.

Umineko would not even be half as good without the music.

I can still even remember the simplest of the "scene setting" songs because of how well they worked

It is annoying that Umineko is now basically impossible to buy and will be for the forseeable future. The old translation wasn't great but at least it existed

Yeah, and the variety is generally impressive. They usually have a few different variations on themes that would otherwise show up a lot. There are some VNs where I end up thinking "ugh here's that 'happy music' loop yet again".

OP: is it okay to talk about that "Kindred Spirits on the Roof" game that just came out on Steam? I've been playing it a bit and I feel incredibly conflicted about it. Both the game itself and that question.

Nope. If Steam had a censored version it would be okay, but reports say that the Steam version is uncensored and leaves in all the sex. Best not to start down that road. Sorry.

There's about as much sex in it as a PG13 movie though, Steam wouldn't actually let an uncensored R-18 game on there.

I remember asking this question in the vita thread once and getting a pretty small number of answers. I like visual novel games that have good amount of actual gameplay to them still. Like Phoenix Wright and DanganRonpa with the spot the contradiction trials, or zero escape with the puzzle rooms.
When I asked in the vita thread I was told I'd pretty much listed everything on vita already, though some people recommended a few DS games: Time Hollow, Hotel Dusk, and Ghost trick (kind of pushing what you consider a visual novel, but obviously an amazing game.)
This thread seems to be talking a lot about PC visual novels too, so I figure it's worth giving another ask. Games for Vita/DS are still good to recommend though.

What are good visual novel games that still have a decent amount of gameplay to them? I see that Rhythm game in the op, is there a lot of gameplay in that or is it extremely long sessions of novel between songs?

If you liked Hotel Dusk, the sequel Last Window is very good (though if you're US you'll need to import it from Europe.

When people say "visual novel" they really mean it. There's very rarely gameplay elements in those titles. I can't recall a single PC VN with any gameplay element that isn't just picking an option to where the story will lead next.

Do get Last Window as suggested, though, it's pretty good.

Non-Japanese stuff, I guess the recent Telltale games would count. Oh and pick Life is Strange ASAP.

I've heard of a couple VNs that supposedly have more gameplay than visual novel things, but I have no idea if any of them are all ages, and I'm not going to be checking that at work :v:

Magical Diary, Long Live the Queen, and Read Only Memories are some good (Western) visual novels with gameplay elements.

EDIT: Beyond just choosing dialogue options, at least. I don't know if they go as far as you'd want!

Eh, ROM isn't good anything. Long Live the Queen's pretty cool, but it's more of a Crusader Kings 2 mixed with Princess Maker than a visual novel. Magical Diary is sort of RPG-ey with stats, pseudo dungeons, and items but I'd say it's more a VN than LLtQ.

You have War of the Human Tanks I guess, but not having played it I think it's a strategy game with VN elements basically? I couldn't say what ratio the two are. I guess there's also Akiba's Trip 2 which again is more of an action game with some VN style cutscenes. I'm not sure at what ratio I'd say it goes from being a VN with gameplay elements to a game with VN elements, or what ratio you're looking for to begin with.

*Edit*

Oh, there's Aselia the Eternal, which is a VN RPG. The English release was All-Ages. Not a Vita game though. I wouldn't Google that at work either, since from what I recall the Japanese version would be very much not work safe.

Lots of low budget Japanese games resort to a VN format for cutscenes. Any given Idea Factory game for example.

yeah war of the human tanks is basically a way more complicated battleship with a visual novel attached. i love it but its not for everyone. there's quite a lot of story with a few branching paths, but it's not for everyone and its probably too hard for a lot of people to actually get through the whole optional content story, so keep that in mind

Thanks for the talk about VN with gameplay elements. I'd actually forgotten Hotel Dusk had a sequel, so that's definitely something to check out at least. I'll have that and VLR which I never got around to playing. After that I guess I'm just stuck waiting for dangan ronpa 3 and Zero escape 3.
The telltale games / life is strange are actually a lot like a western version of visual novels, in many ways. Thanks for reminding me about them.

I'll actually look into that war of the human tanks thing too, that sounds really weird but potentially cool.

VNs with gameplay on DS:
  • Lux-Pain is great, but the English version is let down by an unreadably bad translation. I remember reading a while back that some fans were working on a retranslation patch but I don't think anything has come of that.
  • Tendo Dokuta (aka Lifesigns) is supposed to be not terrible? I haven't played it, though.
  • Touch Detective is closer to a classic lucasarts-style adventure that a VN, but it might be worth your while to look at anyway; both games are quite charming and nutty.
VNs with gameplay on PC/console:
  • The Sakura Wars games are pretty much the defining example of strategy VNs. Unfortunately your only English option is Sakura Wars V on PS2 and Wii.
  • Galaxy Angel is on PC and does the same sort of thing, but it does it rather less well. I still found the combat pretty fun, mostly because of how stupidly broken your ships are compared to your enemy's.
  • Digital: A Love Story sort of counts as a VN and sort of counts as having gameplay?

Are there any English-language VNs that are more social-sim-ish? I basically want something as close to Persona 3/4's VN bits as possible.

I guess if you specifically want something that plays like a modern-Persona-style life sim, there's Cherry Tree High Comedy Club. It's pretty short, though, and its sequel is just a conventional VN.
