I was thinking about making the thread, but I get the feeling it's one of those shows that either gets only five posts, or it gets a hundred posts of people clambering over each other to be the first one to say "Meh."

I loving love it, though. Rust and (especially) Jacobs are fantastic, but Claudia O'Doherty steals the whole drat thing. The impromptu liquor taste test she ran in episode 4 was just wonderful.

That's pretty much the reason I wouldn't make a thread for it either. I'm only like halfway through the first episode but I'm already more than sold.

Hey gang, thread friend VDay here. Vikings is back tonight and is a show that you should watch.

Speaking of which, History Channel has integrated a new, subtle marketing strategy. See if you can spot the ad during this scene from Vikings. It's pretty subtle so you might have to maximize the screenshot and study it for a few minutes.

"Hey VDay, I just barely spotted that but it's probably not that bad. I mean, it's not like that thing was animated right?" you might be thinking. Don't worry fellow thread friend, it totally was.

putting ads over the video makes total sense tbh because even with dvrs you'd still see the ad. i bet it's some exec's idea of trying to come up with a way that dvr viewers should still be able to get them ad revenue

If it wasn't for a text I got earlier about Love reminding me, they would've served good purpose in this thread because I had no idea it was due today (despite listening to Comedy Bang Bang last week). I love the cast, and I think that alone will make this enjoyable. Finally! A use for awful UK Netflix this month.

Sam's Torches pretty much paid for the entire Arrow set as well. They've been prolific lately. Can't watch the Namba Parbat scenes anymore all I can see are ads for open flames and iron cages.

I think it's asking a pretty big leap of faith from viewers to have the pilot be 40 minutes of "these people are miserable trainwrecks before they meet," because I don't think it necessarily sets an accurate tone for what comes next.

Through episode 5, there's only been one scene where I thought it might be veering into Too Awkward territory, and that ends up getting turned on its head in a fun way. Show's not perfect, but I think there are more really funny moments in it than Master of None through the same point (although more often than not, they're smaller moments)

I've only watched the first episode of Master of None, because despite being hilarious, watching things that are too awkward practically causes me physical pain. I watched the first episode, told everyone that I know that it was great and they should watch it, and then still haven't decided if I want to subject myself to more.

I think the second episode is really good especially if you have immigrant parents. It's funny and I didn't see much awkwardness.

The second episode is also kind of awkward, but then the rest of the series is less cringe comedy than "insightful" comedy. There's fantastic episodes about racism in TV, sexism, and the ethics of sleeping with a married person. and the last three episodes are perfect.

Maybe because they aren't actors but they are actually his parents?

My parents kind of act like that too, maybe that's why I kinda didn't really care enough about it.

It does get awkward, especially that first episode. The second episode cuts down on that and gives you a sense of the way those two work together, and it's a lot more tolerable from there.

...Well, except for episode 5, which had me screaming "STOP. STOP. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, STOP" at the screen right before they flipped the concept on its head and made it loving hysterical.

It's super Apatow but definitely has other sensibilities in there too; I assume largely Paul Rust's. But so many scenes (one of them throwing blu-rays out of a car window especially) wouldn't feel out of place at all in an Apatow movie. Plus they actually wrote scripts rather than just letting people improvise for 5 hours

e: oh neat John Slattery directed episode 4! Which, for the record, has my favourite comedy scene in anything from this year so far

The opening of the first episode? Yeah my roommate had just bought some of that brand of apple juice the previous day. Because duh. It's so good.

I live in a weird generation. True Detective season 1 is amazing. It has an amazing into song. The song is "Far From Any Road" by The Handsome Family. Huge fan of the show, huge fan of the song. So I listen to it a lot and I read and post in True Detective discussions. Eventually it comes up that "Far From Any Road" is remarkably similar to Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood's "Summer Wine". And I listen to the song, and I definitely buy it. An homage, not a ripoff or anything. So "Summer Wine" makes it onto my rotation of songs to listen to on youtube while drunk. Which is why I immediately recognized it when it played over the speakers at bar I was at to see an outdoor showing of Donnie Darko.

Sure it's totally a coincidence, but on the other hand, it's statistically unsurprising that the person my age whose picking tunes at the bar that's showing Donnie Darko runs in the same internet circles as me and they're playing the song for the same reason that I recognize it.
