Floodixor posted:Has anyone seen the shoegaze documentary Beautiful Noise? I've really wanted to see it since I saw initial blurbs about it when it was still in development stages a while back, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I'd love to know if any shoegaze fans in this thread have seen it and what anyone's thoughts are about it. I watched it and its pretty good if you just wanna nerd out about shoegaze and watch all your favorite artists wax nostalgic about it I suppose. Rageaholic Monkey posted:I saw it and it's alright, but I've heard there's better documentaries out there on the same subject which is pretty easy to believe. I haven't seen them if that's true, though. I'd certainly love to know what these are!

And while not really shoegaze (more kind of math rock-y) check out Elephant Gym aswell, they make really fun/cute stuff. By the way, this is probably an old hat to most of you but there's a Hatsune Miku shoegaze album and it is ridiculously good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vl96c7Bjmo

I think a lot of Asian shoegaze bands are pretty much gone which is sad. They sort of just disappear out of the blue and there is no evidence if they are still together or if they broke up. Mikugazer sounds interesting (as someone who has actually played around with the vocaloid software). I may check it out. Thank you, I am glad to have so many recommendations. A good dream pop band from Russia that I found awhile ago is Galway. Their album is free on bandcamp. https://galway.bandcamp.com/album/mria

hi fam, i'm looking for recommendations for bands that sound similar to galaxie 500, spacemen 3, or spiritualized. i've already listened to all of the bands and albums mentioned in the first post and am currently looking for some albums that aren't considered classics. i'm working my way though the thread so i hope this isn't a repost somewhere.

Wonderful Though I'm mildly peeved that I had just bought their new "complete" collection! I like that it goes back to their original "true"-shoegazery sound, but really it makes a lot of sense. The slick later power-pop stuff would have been way more expensive. Still, glad they've still got it.

The lady on the album looks a lot like Liza Minnelli. I wonder if it's her? This Mortal Coil was the 4AD supergroup collaborative album. If that really is Liza Minnelli, or not, it personifies the mood of the album quite well...look at those big sad soulful eyes, she's a beauty.

As to overlooked bands/albums, I'm not sure if the OP mentions asobi seksu if not this is a crime Chapterhouse is contemporaneous with the shoegazer scene and usually regarded as something of a "me too" act but I think their album whirlpool is pretty solid and adds a unique madchester twist on shoegaze For some lesser known contemporary stuff I'd say try out tashaki miyaki, lilys, viva voce Also galaxie spinoff Damon & Naomi aint too bad

I feel like everything I look for in shoegaze has already been done and nothing else seems to recapture it for me. The Split album by Lush, Loveless by MBV, a couple of the better Alcest records and Deathconsciousness by Have a Nice Life. Is there anything else out there that will give me that feeling? Or did I just kinda explode the genre by listening to only the best of it? I listened to Lush and MBV in college, 20 years ago, then got into Alcest and HANL like maybe 5 years ago... so I've got a 15+ year gap in here. The only thing I can think of otherwise is that shinywhateverstuff from russia that I was listening to a week or so ago and it did get my interest - enough to make this post and ask for more.

Fenrir posted:I feel like everything I look for in shoegaze has already been done and nothing else seems to recapture it for me. Are you looking for stuff that's similar to what you liked, or other good shoegaze-y stuff that doesn't sound the same? I haven't found much that scratches the MBV itch, but for Lush... More similar to Lush: Deep Cut - Real good Brit-based, girl-fronted shoegaze, obviously influenced by Lush https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTDffxWk750 Film School - Generically shoegaze-y, this particular album has some Lush-like songs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1d7RHnZxVc Good, doesn't sound like Lush at all: Astreal - Singaporian shoegaze with a post-rock feel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMhI6Y2ONqY No Joy - Ranges from dream pop to riot grrl, insanely good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVbGpYUbozg And some stuff I'll probably get poo poo for lumping in with shoegaze, but it's loving great: Devics - Mellow dream pop, but their album Buxom gets noisy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0J1Tufhsc4 Mr. Gnome - Experimental dreamy noisy what the gently caress pop, my favorite band along with Lush https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHShd5p-h9I WhiteHowler fucked around with this message at 21:35 on Jun 4, 2016 |

Fenrir posted:I feel like everything I look for in shoegaze has already been done and nothing else seems to recapture it for me. I like WhiteHowler's list, but for some modern stuff (more guitar oriented) I'd add: Ringo Deathstarr. (I loving love this band). This is a slight more Lush-like track, though they do male vocals too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46XU6PGvIP4 A Place To Bury Strangers. Hard to choose a specific song. I love the Exploding Head album shitloads. Its sound is generally more Psychocandy-era JAMC or Isn't Anything MBV. This track is a bit of an exception. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXsHK40tmEM For something quite different, I'd recommend you check out Ulrich Schnauss, who basically does electronica with shoegazer influences. This track is what got me into him, but the entire album, Goodbye, is great. And the preceding one, A Strangely Isolated Place is it's own unique special thing. Took longer to grow on me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bINikRHQy9s
