I used to run a forum with maybe 60 active users and I lost my adsense license because some kid who reacted badly to being banned for a couple days sent them an avalanche of reports. Eventually I got an email informing me that I was suspended because someone had reported a thread with "poo poo" in the title and this was a breach of their terms somehow. Probably coulda appealed it but :geno:

I can understand a sudden surge of clicks being suspicious, cause otherwise any rando with half an hour could set a bot to auto-click every 30 seconds, but if what PhazonLink says is true then drat, that's some flaw right there.

Least visually intrusive, sure, but one of the biggest problems is that it and analytics are absolutely horrid for anyone that cares the slightest bit about privacy. I don't care how powerful Google is, they aren't The Internet(TM) and they don't have the right to track absolutely everybody everywhere. Ditto facebook and the various other social buttons; simply caring about your own privacy is enough reason to install adblockers and noscript, let alone the bandwidth savings and the cpu savings if you're on a lovely computer

I don't know why they don't make it more clear that Youtube Red also includes the subscription to Google Music. It's not a bad deal if you plan to use both. They should make a bigger thing about it in the ads.

I could actually see this being a purposeful thing. Rather than hearing from them about the bundled product in some ad where you think "what's the catch?", you hear it from someone being pleasantly surprised, in a natural human way. Word of mouth has little control, but usually is well trusted.

It also rewards the user who was first like "Oh, come on, why would I pay for that, that's too expensive", and then "Huh, it's a better deal than I expected, cool". It makes you feel smart, but Google got your money, and Google just added another ball to the ballpit where a brony is currently thrashing around after a hard weekend of trying to get a website working on IE.

Google ads creep me out. Tracking in general creeps me out. Watch a movie on Netflix and suddenly there are ads for related media on Google ads. Download a file from piratebay and now there are suggestions for related movies on Netflix. Go to a running store, never post about it or search for related items, and now there's an ad for athletic shoes on some random webpage.

Ad revenue is a really nebulous concept so Google isn't paying you based on people who clickthrough the ad but on your views theoretically assuming that every person that views the ad will at some point buy the product or service advertised. This is counterbalanced by the fact that they pay you very little per view and require minimum monthly revenue to get a steady paycheque from it.

For specific numbers, your first ten theoretical dollars earned aren't payed out at all as a "fee" for signing up for adsense, and you have to earn at least a hundred dollars in your currency in a month in order to pay out.

You can opt out of most of Google's tracking here: http://www.google.com/settings/ads (remember to change the settings for "signed out ads" as well.

And for Chrome at least, there are some useful extensions you can use:

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/iba-opt-out-by-google/gbiekjoijknlhijdjbaadobpkdhmoebb?utm_source=chrome-app-launcher-info-dialog
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/protect-my-choices/hdgloanjhdcenjgiafkpbehddcnonlic?utm_source=chrome-app-launcher-info-dialog
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/...her-info-dialog

It's not 100% perfect, but combined with Adblock/Ublock and Privacy Badger, that should take care of most of it.

Even with no other plugins or settings, Privacy Badger is an absolute must-have extension.

I can't be the one taking crazy pills and thinking this sounds like a bold-faced con on both sides of the deal, for both the "partner" whose video hosts the ads being given a shellgame of unprovable profits, and for the advertisers themselves being sold on a customer base that has no provable existence? I mean, clicks are the only real way to gauge effectiveness in a banner ad, but adsense apparently works on the principle that clicking on an ad is harmful to the advertising process. That's actively saying "our ads only make you money when they DON'T work". To make the discussion cyclical, add in the growing countermeasure of adblockers that nullify any possibility of the ad actually being seen, while google still gets paid by the advertisers, and there just doesn't seem to be a single shred of honesty in the business plan.

Advertisers pay Google per click. https://www.google.ca/adwords/ The reason they ban weird activity is because they want to assure their customers that they aren't paying for bot clicks or something. Being banned from adsense with no way of appealing is dumb yes, but it's not like the whole system is based on moon logic.

Tweeners don't need income. They have parents with income.

Tweens are a pretty desirable demographic, if not for their current spending power then at least for their potential if you get your claws in them early.

So was out with the kids the other day and one of them spotted what looked like a Kung Fu Panda 3 poster. Had the panda and his dad panda on it. Nope, it was for the website fatherhood.gov and the happy text read: Take time to be a dad today.

Even the drat nine year old (who saw the movie last week) asked where the panda's other dad was. The one who adopted him as a baby and raised him. No sign of him, just two similar looking pandas grinning like father and son. The entire drat premise of the third stupid panda movie is that the main panda finds his long-lost panda kind but still the dad who raised him (some kind of bird) is still his dad and part of his family. Fatherhood, only counts when related by blood. When a nine year old can see the flaw in your stupid poster, you need a new poster.

Think for like two minutes about the potential message of the poster.

Could it possibly be drawing a parallel between a movie where a long lost father figure returns and is helpful/good to his son and real life circumstances? Or is it a bad marketing decision by Disney or whoever and the fatherhood.org agency that made it to not include the bird?

I've worked with marketers, and what probably happened is that they just took a look through their approved promo shots, took one that looked like dad and kid, and threw some text on the poster. I'd be absolutely shocked if there were any deeper message, but I guess death of the author technically applies in advertising
