I used to run a forum with maybe 60 active users and I lost my adsense license because some kid who reacted badly to being banned for a couple days sent them an avalanche of reports. Eventually I got an email informing me that I was suspended because someone had reported a thread with "poo poo" in the title and this was a breach of their terms somehow. Probably coulda appealed it but

I know a lot of people who work for Microsoft, and it doesn't surprise me in the least. I actually did some easy freelance design work for a MS employee at one point to...design her a Powerpoint slide deck that looked like Cards Against Humanity cards. For a professional intra-company presentation. They are very permissive of weird nerdy stuff.

A radio ad for a local house builder starts with a bunch of people saying variations of "[family], I'm home!", which for some reason - I think it's supposed to be a joke - culminates in a guy saying "I'm home! Honey? Kids? Anyone!? ", which doesn't exactly seem like the happiest note on which to start pitching your product.

More on the subject of Adsense and its "random" nature and goons. I think some goon helped write an article on being banned from Adsense and how there's no actual human to talk to in getting unbanned. The article gets posted and "mysteriously" all the people mentioned get unbanned.

Adsense is by far the least intrusive and corrupt ad platform out there, even if every person swearing that they totally weren't trying to manipulate their ad revenue and were banned because Google are big meanies is 100% factual they're still better than the alternative.Sic Semper Goon posted:CP = Child Pornography. Jeepers. There was a time when I thought I was the dumb one and just didn't understand how youtube monetization was profitable, as it sounded on even a surface glance to be working in funbucks that didn't actually exist (See: Pewdiepie, youtube multi-millionaire, whose main audience are tweeners who definitely do NOT have the income to justify all the ad revenue spent on him) and then the more this thread teaches me about the process the more I realize I'm absolutely correct and that it all is some mad Ponzi Scheme where it's in Google's best interests to have the system NOT work correctly.

Ad revenue is a really nebulous concept so Google isn't paying you based on people who clickthrough the ad but on your views theoretically assuming that every person that views the ad will at some point buy the product or service advertised. This is counterbalanced by the fact that they pay you very little per view and require minimum monthly revenue to get a steady paycheque from it. For specific numbers, your first ten theoretical dollars earned aren't payed out at all as a "fee" for signing up for adsense, and you have to earn at least a hundred dollars in your currency in a month in order to pay out. Tweeners don't need income. They have parents with income. Tweens are a pretty desirable demographic, if not for their current spending power then at least for their potential if you get your claws in them early.

I can't even remember what I clicked on to get Ali Baba to constantly advertise brick-making machinery to me (I keep my ad blocker turned off on SA and a few other sites) but it happens consistently enough and for a long enough time that my boyfriend is teasing me about being a millionaire brick tycoon behind his back.

Seems to me that Google's advertising model is to let just enough people support themselves off of youtube revenue that people think that it is possible to support yourself off of youtube revenue, so people keep creating content and putting it on their network basically for free. Essentially lottery tickets.

So was out with the kids the other day and one of them spotted what looked like a Kung Fu Panda 3 poster. Had the panda and his dad panda on it. Nope, it was for the website fatherhood.gov and the happy text read: Take time to be a dad today. Even the drat nine year old (who saw the movie last week) asked where the panda's other dad was. The one who adopted him as a baby and raised him. No sign of him, just two similar looking pandas grinning like father and son. The entire drat premise of the third stupid panda movie is that the main panda finds his long-lost panda kind but still the dad who raised him (some kind of bird) is still his dad and part of his family. Fatherhood, only counts when related by blood. When a nine year old can see the flaw in your stupid poster, you need a new poster.

I've worked with marketers, and what probably happened is that they just took a look through their approved promo shots, took one that looked like dad and kid, and threw some text on the poster. I'd be absolutely shocked if there were any deeper message, but I guess death of the author technically applies in advertising

My local Hungry Jack's (Australian Burger King) has more posters than a stalker's shrine about how their beef is hormone free, which is already required by law. Now it's not like they're the only advertisements to ever hinge on something also true of the competition, but to so fiercely push the message only makes me suspicious that they just got caught putting growth hormones in their beef and if my hunch is right they're needlessly calling attention to it.
