LA is super affordable and is one of the few major cities you could get by only working part-time in a coffee shop.

lol, I guess it's super affordable since it still has large sketchy neighborhoods

quote:

The cost of living, and especially renting, in Los Angeles continues to skyrocket and will continue to for the foreseeable future. A new third quarter rental market report by Marcus & Millichap confirms that rents are climbing all over town: asking rents citywide were up 7.8 percent to an average of $1,873 per month. For the year, the report predicts rents will climb 4.8 percent overall, "more than doubling the rate of inflation." It seems no one is immune to these rapid rent increases. Even renters seeking the traditionally cheaper cost of living in the San Fernando Valley are out of luck. The past 12 months saw a 7.4 percent increase in asking rent price up in the Valley. Van Nuys/Northeast Valley prices were up 15.1 percent! No offense, but when Van Nuys rent increases are outpacing every other neighborhood in town, LA's rental market might officially be out of control.

Sure if I want to live in a area where I might get shot or mugged. The job I was considering taking only paid $15 an hour and was in one of the most expensive parts of the city.

What I don't understand about majoring in humanities is can't you just read that poo poo on your own instead of playing viddya games in you spare time? It's not the 19th century anymore, you can access knowledge anywhere. All the classics are in the PUBLIC DOMAIN for gently caress's sake. Put 1000 of em on your kindle. what? there are options but lots of them are lovely

rent control on selected places is like a lottery and encourages lovely practices by landlords (bad maintenance, intentionally trying to get rid of renters, tear-down & redevelopment)

forcing new construction to include "affordable housing" was a neat idea but had been turned into such a loving awful result in a lot of construction, where the peons get their separate back-alley entrance and intentionally awful units that were designed foremost to be able to get ripped out when the time limit is up

fix income inequality would be the real solution because if the rent was too drat high for everyone then the concentration effect might now happen as much. when the rich live in a completely different world that just happens to share the same physical space as the rest of us, they have no reason to consider "creating jobs" elsewhere. there's no reason that every dotcom needs to be in SF but that's where they go because all the tech money is there.

1000 sq feet is gigantic by new york standards, and a great deal of our housing stock was built in the 20s and 30s, so most people here actually have a pretty good idea about what living standards were like for our parents and grandparents.
yeah I guess nyc middle class housing hasn't changed that much.

my mom is planning on moving to north carolina now that she's retired and man looking at real estate in a city where everything is new is eye-opening. seeing a little 60s cigarette box house and the 2006 mini-mansion on the same block is weird.

It's like 35K a year (approx 18/hr) base salary with pretty good, instant benefits and all that free food she mentions. And then several Ks worth of potential bonuses based on your local business harassment numbers

but are rent controlled apartments in the hipest locations?? i think not. there might be *gulpz* disadvantaged citizens there

Well actually afaik the entire city has rent control for buildings built before 1979. So even in the nicest and hippest parts of town , there are many renters who are paying a fraction of market rate. And these places often have roommates come and go, so you can find very affordable rooms if you are patient and lucky enough.

You may be thinking of affordable housing. I don't know a lot about that, but I think there are big waiting lists for that and it generally isn't for 20-something, single, college grads.

The hard part isn't learning something, it's how to take that something and turn it into something that is actually usable that makes money. That part is incredibly hard and college teaches you how to do that, at least in theory.

i have not actually seen confirmation she was literally earning minimum wage and lots of things make more sense about her story if she was actually earning quite a bit more

still a pittance in SF but not terrible for an entry-level job with plenty of promotion opportunities

up until about 15 years ago you could afford to live in the middle of manhattan making low wages like these. failure of the government to adequately regulate rental units is one of the major driving forces behind nyc and san fran becoming unaffordable. i dont think its entitled to want to have a similar standard of living that our parents and forebears had.

I have clear memories of shopping for jobs in 2001 and I don't recall central NYC being very practical on minimum wage (it wasn't practical at $50k either).
