So Ammon Bundy "taught" his own lawyer how to read the Constitution?

This is like that old Mitch Hedberg joke: "I bought a belt to hold up my pants, but my pants have belt loops to hold the belt up. What's going on here? Who's the real hero?" Just replace belts with lawyers, pants with defendants, and he tells the joke with his pants around his ankles.

Hold your laughter until the judge brings down the sentence, beginning with 'if you hadn't pulled this SovCit bullshit on me, your sentence wouldn't be in the triple digits.'

Hah, did we talk about this idiot yet?

“I'm getting sick and tired of all this crap that's going on,” Kenneth Francis says on a video he uploaded [to YouTube] in December titled “Need Help Getting a Gun?

“It’s really starting to piss me off, so if you have a felony or whatever, contact me,” he said.

"$50 is a very reasonable price because I'm basically going to be breaking the law here,” Francis says on video. “And I'm okay with that because the law is corrupt."

Bill so far: 3.3 million. http://www.oregonlive.com/oregon-standoff/2016/02/33_million_and_counting_the_co.html#incart_big-photo

Not included in the tally were things like added demand for food and services at the Harney County Senior Center. The nonprofit, with more than $1 million in annual revenue, runs a food pantry and administers federal energy assistance.

Executive Director Angie Lamborn encountered new faces among the regular visitors during the occupation. They asked for extra food and acknowledged they weren't full-time residents, she said.

Lamborn couldn't quantify the impact on the senior center's finances, but she said they've "taken a pretty big hit" as a result.

These idiots were taking food for needy people from food banks.

So they had "large food stores" but were begging online and literally taking charity from the county food bank. In a county of 10k people.

I'm going to guess the "large food stores" was either food that required more than a middling knowledge, or poo poo, any knowledge of cooking, or was stuff like vegetables. They probably wanted those boxes of White Castle hamburgers you can buy in the grocery store and heat in the microwave. Or cans of franks and beans.

Ten of the original 16 people indicted in the alleged conspiracy appeared in court and entered not guilty pleas. Of those, Kenneth Medenbach said he wished to represent himself and was not ready to issue a plea yet, but the judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf. Six others waived their right to appear at the arraignment.

After the judge explained their rights to a trial and their presumption of innocence, several of the defendants directly challenged her assertions.

"It's difficult to understand the presumption of innocence when I've spent the last month in a jail cell and led around in chains wherever I go,'' Payne said.

Brown said she understood his concerns, but noted that his detention was a separate matter.

Co-defendant Ryan Bundy, standing beside his lawyer in the jury box, grabbed hold of a wireless microphone that the lawyers were passing from one to another and told the court that he shared the same reservation. He is Ammon Bundy's older brother.

"We're being treated as we're guilty,'' he said. "So I don't understand the presumption of innocence.''

Co-defendant Jason Patrick, when asked if he understood his constitutional rights, replied, "I understand I have no rights at all. You're the federal government. You're going to do whatever you want.''

And David Fry, the last to surrender to federal officers on Feb. 11, joined in, "It's weird - innocent until proven guilty - shackled up.''

[...]

Defense lawyers have arranged to travel to the refuge Thursday to begin videotaping and photographing the site, escorted by federal officers. The judge declined a request by Ammon Bundy's lawyers to allow their client to be transported to the refuge as well so he could help pinpoint what may be significant.

When the judge dismissed his lawyer Lissa Casey's concerns about getting enough time to examine the evidence at the refuge, Ammon Bundy stood up beside Casey, only to be quickly admonished by Brown to "Sit down sir.'' And, he did.

[...]

The judge set a Feb. 29 date for defendant Pete Santilli, an independent broadcaster, to argue for a review of his continued detention. Medenbach stood briefly to read his "motion to dismiss for lack of jurisdiction,'' but the judge said he could do so at a later date.

[...]

Before the hearing, a family of Bundy supporters broke out in song in the staid hallway outside the courtroom. "When love shines in,'' "when tomorrow comes,'' and "you're my flashlight,'' were among the lyrics.

Mother Odalis Sharp said she drove with eight of her 10 children from Kansas to support the defendants in the case. She said they face injustice, and "God-fearing, land-loving people are standing for them.''

The Sharp family sat in the second row of the courtroom gallery. Odalis Sharp had her Bible open on her lap during the proceeding, with one of her younger daughters resting her head on her mother's lap at times.

Ammon Bundy turned in his seat and blew them a kiss when they entered.

[...]

I'm thinking Medenbach was refusing to submit a plea because it would create joinder.

Exactly.

But in so many words, because most sovcits are idiots they think legal terminology is akin to witchcraft, so things like 'create joinder' or 'admiralty court' are their own magic spells that they think will get them out of trouble.

Also lol that they can't understand why taking over a wildlife refuge with guns is the reason they're in pretrial detention. The comedy is only just beginning.

drat it you gonna make me type all this.

You know how via a contract, you can agree to act as, say, the CEO of Apple, or as my wedding photographer? And through this contract, by agreeing to these roles, both parties incur certain responsibilities?

Sovcits have the ridiculous idea that this is how criminal law and citizenship works. When you are born the government issues a birth certificate, which creates a legal identity for you. This identity is a corporation (named after you, but spelled in all capital letters) which possesses all the benefits of citizenship but also has to pay taxes and obey traffic laws and whatever. But if you just calmly say "No deal, I do not want to be that guy you made up," then they have to let you just walk around with a rocket launcher not paying taxes. As long as you don't let them trick you into creating joinder, ie as long as you don't agree to legally join your corporate and your physical personas together, you get to do whatever you want. Also you can cash out ten million dollars from the magical government trust that for some reason exists in your name.

Hopefully I need not explain why and how this is completely bananas.

It's the logic of saying "I'm secretly the king of america but nobody knows about it. You have to give me special treatment" but then when nobody knows about it you're reduced to screaming the secret at the top of your lungs as you are tased and arrested and jailed for 20 years for declaring yourself the judge and sentencing the imposter judge to death at your trial.

If you had to be clued in to this One Weird Trick then guess what literally nobody, not the police, not the media, not the bystanders watching your adult temper tantrum, literally loving nobody is going to respect your magic words or the fact that you wore a loose approximation of judges robes to the court room thinking that gives you the authority to dismiss the charges and award yourself damages.

You have to be extremely loving desperate, and very very dumb, to be a sovereign citizen. I have to believe that up to half the dumb-ness is willful because of the desperation.

You can tell it's a grift that's been slowly burning for years because of all the "and also"s tacked onto the description. Grifters have been having to make loftier and loftier promises over the years to get people to buy their brand of SovCit, so where it started as "you can live alone and the feds won't bother you", it's now morphed into "the Feds owe you billions of dollars in silver and you can fire and lynch any of them you like"

Funded Justice is a cyberbegging/crowdfunding site for defendant's seeking donations towards their legal bills, and there's probably enough material there for it's own thread. Of course many of the Bundy gang have tried to get in on the action, lets see how their fundraising is going:

Jon Ritzheimer has:

SUPPORTERS
80
PLEDGED
$3,735
TIME LEFT
15 days

Ryan Payne has:

SUPPORTERS
37
PLEDGED
$2,096
TIME LEFT
75 days

Ammon Bundy is way out in front with:

SUPPORTERS
1093
PLEDGED
$80,415
TIME LEFT
1 day

All of them have set their target to $100,000. If the target is not met they still get to keep the money.

The bundy's lawyer has had an ethics complaint filed against him with the Oregon State Bar by the prosecution.

The Oregonian posted:

The district attorney of Oregon’s northwesternmost county has filed an ethics complaint against a pair of Eugene lawyers who represent the now-jailed leader of a militia group that took over the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in January, calling them out for the media attention they’ve sought since their client’s arrest.

In a complaint filed Wednesday with the Oregon State Bar, Clatsop County District Attorney Josh Marquis asserts that attorneys Mike Arnold and Lissa Casey have said far too much to the press regarding the high-profile criminal case involving their client, Ammon Bundy.

“Just as prosecutors are not allowed to try their cases on courthouse steps, neither are defense counsel,” Marquis wrote in the complaint.

The Eugene lawyers have held a series of news conferences since Bundy’s Jan. 27 arrest, at times sharing with reporters detailed statements made by their incarcerated client. Marquis asserts that by regularly putting themselves in front of television cameras in recent weeks, Arnold and Casey may have run afoul of an ethics rule that limits what attorneys can say about a case prior to trial.
