Free to roam the heavens in man's noble quest to investigate the weirdness of the universe!

I don't know if this is the best thread to ask, but I was thinking of doing some night photography this weekend thanks to this thread, but just wanted to get a feel for some pointers and pitfalls so that they aren't all unsalvageable trash photos. I know to bring a tripod.

(Assuming you'll be using a digital camera and not in the moonlit wilderness) Meter for the lights then step up your exposure compensation however much you think you can and still not blow them/keep them recoverable in post. Use a lens hood to reduce flare from strong directional light. Don't use crazy high ISO when you have the stability of a tripod. Use shutter delay. Long exposure noise reduction is a thing you might want to check out if your camera supports the option and you're going more than a few seconds of exposure time. Don't let people sneak up on you and be ready to slip away or explain yourself if you run into nosey night people. Look out for incandescent and fluorescent lights and shoot raw so you can mess around with white balance.

dont even TRY it, pal

Love the composition, the dynamic lighting, everything about this except for the blown out window and crushed shadows. I think for something this intense you're almost stuck combining two exposures to make sure it all comes through.

Thanks. We now return to your regularly scheduled mediocrity. (For now..until I can start remembering to turn off auto ISO when shooting on a tripod.)

Thanks for the feedback, and with a second look you're absolutely right about the clipping. I went back through LR and was able to rescue quite a bit of it and make a version I like better.
