Xcom is a great game and I love it.

I love that the classes are balanced and cool.

The base is better than eu/ew

Grenades and ammo rule

Failing missions is not a huge deal this time. If the mission ain't worth it,bug out.

Scanning for the rewards is cool. I like that the monthly one behaves differently. It's green, and only takes 3 days, and gives you a portion each day, so if you get interrupted you still keep some of the supplies.

I believe they're still +20% defense, which is pretty huge, but they were 'free' in EU/EW and here they take up a grenade slot (which is huge). Also working against them is the combined hit/crit rolls, so if you do get hit while smoked it's almost guaranteed to crit.
If they were like smoke canisters or something and you could take one in your secondary slot, they'd probably see a lot of high level use.

Aid protocol + smoke grenade is the same as high cover, which would be an alright emergency tool, but there's a like 90% chance flashbang grenades will be better in the same situation anyway.

e: wait lmao no the wiki says they literally do nothing, I thought your language was figurative.

Yeah I was thinking of trying smoke grenades but I've rocked the flashbangs instead. They rule.

The thing about words is that meanings can twist just like a snake, and if you want to find snakes, look for them behind words that have changed their meaning.
Yeah, smoke grenades apparently don't actually give defense due to a bug. As usual, there's a mod for that but still :cripes: Firaxis.

Hey I'm just getting caught up on Beags, so watching his Firaxis stream on his channel. He mentions he was doing a stream on Thursday, but it's not on Beagsnjam, is it on any other channel so I can watch it?

I think he streamed it on the FiraxisGames channel instead of his own. Try checking their archives out.

This game really is harder than EU/EW. Brimming with confidence following my Commander win, I began a Legendary Ironman run. Then I restarted it. Then I restarted it. Etc. On my sixth try, I made it through the first two missions with only one death and two soldiers down for forty days. Then the third mission happened, where one soldier moved and activated three pods. By the time I called that run I had two dead, one mind-controlled and one flanked by two overwatching Advent.

This game desperately needs some smoothing of the difficulty curve. Even a small boost for the first five missions or something would be a help. As it stands there is simply no reason not to restart again and again because you can't recover from a devastating mission in the early game.

Nothing better than swinging around a little girl like a flail.
So I ended up having an Andromedron buddy and a Heavy MEC buddy to tango with a Sectopod. I am sad I wasn't able to get a Sectopod buddy.

Also ended up having T3 gear with a 100+ hit specialist on the first chryssalid mission. Wasn't even attempting to game the timer since this is literally my second campaign and I failed my first campaign extremely early.

Beat Commander, one of my rangers, Red, managed to kill every Avatar I faced :v: Started on Legendary, beat Gate Crasher with one injury. Beat the first Op to save my engineer, one injury, got an engineer from a scan. Saved the first scientist, one injury. Now I got my retaliation mission to do. Finding it not that hard so far.

It's good to spend some, just be careful. Radio towers go a long way to reduce contact cost.

I wonder how difficult it would be to mod a moderate-to-large aim bonus when your soldier is adjacent (as in, the next square over) to an enemy unit...

But it's not a double engineer booster shot due to the fact* the supplies could buy you one engineer at RHQ, and the power cost must be compensated for either by committing an engineer to power or spending additional supplies on power buildings. So you're only netting <1 engineer to begin with. Then the monthly upkeep deletes that effective value in only a couple months.

*I will again admit that this depends on an engineer being available for purchase and will state that even from my down-on-workshops perspective, they would be handy when the game is not giving you any other sources of engineers. At least a workshop can always be built. And, actually, you might be so engineer-hungry you buy them at RHQ and still want more. But I haven't experienced that - if I can get 3 or 4 in the first few months that gets jobs done, and supplies have other uses than going totally engineer-mad. I finished Commander the first time with effectively 10 engineers and that was 3 or 4 more than I probably actually needed around.

the correct answer is to buy the engineer and build the workshop

As easy as changing a few numbers in a text file, the default bonus for rifles and such is around 20%. It's under "weapon range tables" in xcom 2/xcomgame/config/DefaultGameData_WeaponData.ini - back it up first.

All the returning aliens get the Beagle treatment as far as names go but the Andromedon is the Green Kool-Aid Man, and the Gatekeeper is the Pokeball of Death. Advents are Mooks, except Stun Lancers who are plain Fucksticks or Stickfucks depending on my mood.

Archons are Archons, or Heavy Floaters because they are exactly as infuriating as their predecessors in Long War were.

Finally finished my first game after having to wait 2 weeks due to harddrive failure.

I was definitely NOT winning that last chamber, untill MVP Alex 'Breaker' Müller continued his Execution streak and took down the final 2 Avatars. Earlier in the map he'd also overwatch one-shotted a Sectopod I just revealed, executed a berserker and then did it again with a Gatekeeper.

Without his Superior Repeater, Earth would still be loving hosed.

I waited way too long to get a Psionic. Only managed to get started on it in September, while I had all plasma and power armour available. I thought it'd be more useful to have all my soldiers be better and get some tricks (shredder cannon is amazing), but holy poo poo does a trained Psionic kick rear end. Kinda want to play a squad of 6 of them.

On lower difficulties, sure. On Legend a Sectoid usually has 10 HP which is outside of kill range for even a Blademaster-specced Ranger unless they get a perfect damage roll. And Flashbangs solve any MC or Psi Zombie concerns from a Sectoid.

Besides, Sectoids are really just pests; even if Blademaster did allow a kill always on the higher difficulties, Sectoids are the least threatening enemies on the map generally. They waste two turns making Zombies and trying to panic/MC before ever firing a shot, and if you still can't reach it a Flashbang will clear its minions.

I'm of the opinion that this is mostly bullshit purely due to the amount of times they've mind controlled my guy with the flashbang. Seriously gently caress off you bastards.

In my playthrough honestly I found Andromedons and Sectoids the least dangerous aliens. I don't think one of them ever got a shot off at me before I took them out. Chryssalids also weren't much trouble.

Stun lancers, Archons, Gatekeepers were all bastards.
