Prince Philip Movementquote:The Prince Philip Movement is a religious sect followed by the Kastom people around Yaohnanen village on the southern island of Tanna in Vanuatu. It is a cargo cult of the Yaohnanen tribe,[1][2] who believe that Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, the consort to Queen Elizabeth II, is a divine being. Cargo Cults happen when poorer societies come into contact with richer ones, often during war time. The members of these societies often build their own airplanes or cargo out of whatever material is around in hopes of bringing back the real thing. I guess it's sadder than unnerving but the Prince Philip thing is taking it a step further.

Cargo Cults in general are sad, but the Prince Phillip one comes off as more charmingly funny. They're able to get semi-regular contact with him and it's not like he's the center of their religious life, he's just the god who happens to be around on earth. I also find their reasoning especially funny. Queen Elizabeth is/was the most powerful woman in the world and everyone acted with extreme respect toward her, expect for Phillip who was his goofball self. So naturally someone able to act that casually around the most powerful woman in the world must be divine in some manner.

Philip is probably happy that, for once, somewhere, he's more famous than Princess Diana.

Just read a great article about this woman who got into recreating murder scenes which look like the most hosed up dollhouses possible. They were used to train detectives about evidence gathering in the mid Twentieth century.quote:C onvinced by criminological theory that crimes could be solved by detailed analysis of visual and material evidence, and drawing on her experiences creating miniatures, Frances Glessner Lee constructed a series of crime scene dioramas, which she called The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death. http://www.deathindiorama.com/index.html

Holy christ. My 11 month old son got a head CT scan for a really bad sinus infection, and even just with that I feel bad knowing that it upped his chance of brain cancer. I don't want to even think about how I would feel if he had the equivalent of an hour's worth of CT scans.

Aesop Poprock posted:How about the part where you asked for examples of other cultures that still practice cannibalism aside from new guinea cause you were sure there weren't any, and when given examples you completely ignored them None of them use humans as a primary food source, because they can't, which is my point. It would either signal the end of the society or cause it. But that distinction seems to be a point of contention for some, if they make that allowance at all that cannibalism might actually not be a good thing. I don't even know why we're having this conversation honestly. e: and not to get all eurocentric but when referring to a society or culture that usually means "the great nation of X" or "the populous and storied ____ culture" not a handful of weirdos living in the margins and outside the laws of an actual nation-state Harold Stassen has a new favorite as of 07:05 on Feb 29, 2016 |

I know a link to the article that this was based on was posted here but can't find it now. It's about a rape victim and how she ended up being charged with making a false statement and disbelieved by everyone in her life before the rapist was caught after assaulting numerous other women. Anyway, This American Life did a podcast on it that came out today. It's kind of infuriating, but a great listen. https://itunes.apple.com/ca/podcast/this-american-life/id201671138?mt=2&i=363853609

Have 5000 odd words on Toilet Paper orientationquote:While many people consider this topic unimportant, some hold strong opinions on the matter. Advice columnist Ann Landers said that the subject was the most responded to (15,000 letters in 1986) and controversial issue in her column's history. Defenders of either position cite advantages ranging from aesthetics, hospitality, and cleanliness to paper conservation, the ease of detaching individual squares, and compatibility with a recreational vehicle or a cat. Some writers have proposed connections to age, sex, or political philosophy, and survey evidence has shown a correlation with socioeconomic status.[2] A generic answer is that it should hang the way the person doing the roll changing prefers. Also someone is still maintaining the (x) number of creepy wiki articles for skimming.

Wiki itself did a study that showed that the most active editors of wikipedia were IP addresses located at the headquarters of major corporations policing their own articles. So Debeers had some intern scrupulously removing anything about blood diamonds or the artificial scarcity of diamonds, while Coca-Cola had people eliminating the time some bottling plant in south america hired mercenaries to kill workers trying to unionize. That's fairly unnerving.
