So I went to see the live Walking the Room today at SF Sketchfest, and I was wondering if this thread could explain a riff about another comedian that happened since everyone seems quite knowledgeable about random stories in the comedy world. (google didn't turn up anything) [Spoiler tag in case it was recorded and people want to be surprised by the riff] Mitch Hedberg apparently had an untreated hole in his leg and almost lost it? Is that just a drug related joke? Also they joked about Ralphie May's twitter feed showing a man who had one too many bad days and had gone over the edge also came up coincidently.

Out of the many Netflix standup specials I've watched recently, I've got to add more praise for Mulaney's Comeback Kid. It seemed enjoyable but not impressive at first, though the Back to the Future bit really tickled me. Then it kind of stuck with me for a while and I had to watch it again, which I rarely do with specials. The whole thing's really masterful. I could see part of the process at work where bits that were probably 2 minutes long at first were reduced to ten-word asides in the middle of another story. I wonder how long the performance was before editing--it appeared at least to be only lightly edited. Contrast it with Aziz's bullshit thing at Madison Square Garden for watching a comedian work a large crowd versus a celebrity/comic/writer/actor mildly entertaining a large crowd.

I think if we're judging 'greats' we should defer to the wisdom of a legend of comedy who's hits include 'I'm a large fat man' and 'I'm from the south' and also I think a joke about pussy eating relating to being fat somehow?

Normally I'd laugh at Ralphie May because he's not funny and sounds crazy in his attack, but it sounds like he's going through a mental breakdown. He cancelled a late show a couple weeks back in VA and people at the 7pm show said he was full on crying at the end of his set.

Mulaney rules and so does Chelsea, also yeah obviously Ralphie May is not and hasn't ever been OK in the head

It's weird that he's calling her out now when that special has been on Netflix for months. Like he just saw it in his "recommended for you" section and flipped out.

She had tweeted about it the day before, I think. Also, according to Wikipedia, his FEMALE COMEDIAN wife is filing for divorce and seeking custody of the kids, so I can see why he'd be a bit mentally off at this point in time.

He was on a podcast a few months ago (Joey Diaz I think) and sounded kind of messed up, talking about the divorce. It was pretty sad actually, and I think he's pretty much a mess these days. More so than usual.

Shawcroft is reasonably nuts, assuming she even ever really got clean. I've only really briefly interacted with her when she came to a torrent site I was on that was hosting Los Enchiladas! back in the day. Doug Stanhope was ranting about her recently though; apparently she's sitting on tons of unreleased material.

She doesn't want to release it because she's afraid it would tarnish Mitch's legacy. Sure, diehard fans would love to hear bootleg recordings of him working out new material and things that he cut or never got quite right for a special, but other people would be like, "Oh, man, I thought this guy was good."

Mr. Warmth, the Don Rickles documentary on Netflix is amazing. It was originally made around his 80th birthday but now he's almost 90 and still still going strong on the late night circuit.

First I ever saw of Jackie was when she went on a late night show like Conan in '99 or whatever and doing 5 minutes that was mostly about videogames and talking to a 90's studio audience about Lethal Enforcers.

She had a pretty solid bit about her game designer husband going to a strip club and not understanding 'the game' and disliking the 'in game purchases' etc. that was pretty funny. She is a giant nerd.

I've been thinking about trying out to do an open mic night here at a local club. Anyone here ever tried it? Can you offer any pointers? I don't have a lot to lose just giving it a shot but I'd hate to get up there and bomb.

Illinois Smith posted:you probably will bomb though Statistically, yeah. The first few times are generally at little painful. My advice: spend a week or two writing jokes, choose your favorites, go up and have fun. If you're having fun so will they. Tell them it's your first time, people are always supportive of a first timer. Stay away from the offensive stuff at first, you won't be able to pull it off. Don't get mad at the audience, if they don't laugh at a punchline just say "I think that's funny" and move on. If you don't know how to write jokes yet, just tell a funny anecdote from your life in which you're the victim. (And not, for example, a funny story about how your ex was a bitch.) When you're doing anecdotal, you don't have to worry about choking on the memorization part. If it's not exciting, pat yourself on the back for trying something new. If you find you like that microphone feeling, congrats: you're a comedian now. You're stuck. Good luck.

As a fellow mic'er, there's so much advice I could give (and take) but for a first timer: -clear the mic stand if you're going to hold the mic -try to have a punch line or pregnant pause every 20-30 seconds -don't apologize or make fun of the fact that you're not funny -don't worry if no one laughs because chances are the audience is 95% comics waiting to go up So what that means is that while you're waiting to go up you should watch the other comics and laugh at their jokes. It will make you less nervous about your set and maybe have a positive effect on the room.

I dont know if there is a consensus on this but if a comedian is doing three days in a row at one club, is one show considered superior? Its thurs fri sat so what is the best night to go? Im leaning towards thursday to save myself weekend traffic

Depends on the venue / town / comedian, Thursday could be better if it means the crowd is %15 less wasted because it's a weeknight.

If I can't make that, I'll go Friday to the earlier show (I am assuming the comic is doing two shows on Fri/Sat? that's how it usually is here). Late shows tend to have more drunk idiots being a bad crowd, Saturdays bring in out of towners who are sometimes also a bad crowd. But that's just my opinion
