So it turns out I was votin' for Christ, and thought my listeners were votin' for Christ. But it turns out they were votin' for anger and hate all along. What's going on???? What's going on is that the Christ vote and the anger/hate vote have coincided perfectly until just this minute, where this other not-as-Christian-as-you'd-like guy momentarily has a brighter anger and hate flare. But don't you worry, they'll be driving back in your lane soon enough.

I laughed at the idea of a shitkicking linebacker Fed named "Terry Gross" speaking on an NPR show. I feel bad for Alex tho, he's all mixed up right now and I kind of feel like they were picking at him for ~moving content~ when he still has a lot of poo poo to get through before there's gonna be some TAL-esque life lesson wrapped in a bow. It was a voluntary interview but it was edited in a way that was like "get a load of this wacky dude", but despite his polished (for his age) speaking style he's still a kid. And also he's black, and his parents are conservatives with thick Southern accents. So to me it's like Tread lightly Zoe, don't fall into the "let us observe and study the simple ones" left-leaning public radio (for white urbane liberals) trap. I did like hearing that there was still a lot of love and support in that family though, despite some difficult times. There's a lot of people who are way less out and proud from families that are way less religious who get dicked over way worse just for being gay.

I'm a Stan for Zoe because I kind of know her personally, but I don't think she went in to push for the "moving content." It's not as though Alex is lying to himself or not aware that he's gay - if that were the case, you could have a "look at this wacky guy supporting homophobic Republicans - doesn't he get it?" story. He's conflicted by his identity, but I think the story of reconciling that conflict is a legitimate story. Also, Zoe's been pretty good about working with the right - they sent her to Colorado to cover the Republican events during the 2012 election, and it's somewhat telling that she was able to sit down with the evangelical family for however long without them (apparently) addressing the fact that she is SUPER gay.

It just seems that this guy was ready to reveal his life story in response to a question about the weather. Also - as a mother, how do you feel knowing that your kid's efforts to win your heart were, to some extent, part of a conscious power play? planet money is terrible. adam davidson takes money (in the form of "speaking fees") from many of the large firms he covers as a "journalist". he also claims glass steagall was a bad law and its repeal had nothing to do with the economic events of the last decade. and don't forget chana joffe walt passing off unedited talking points from right wing think tanks that are bent on destroying the last vestiges of the american social safety net. burn that poo poo to the ground

It's OK in the little 15-20 minute bursts they do now, if it was TAL-length episodes I would lose interest pretty quick. The perceived political leanings never really got to me either until their most recent episode glorifying some guy who declared himself a sovereign citizen and stopped paying taxes for several years. Then the lawyer who told him how to do it died and he quickly fled the country, only to be extradited and forced to pay up

I liked the reveal that Planet Money did on SSDI becoming welfare for rural communities and I don't think they passed negative judgement on the practice so much as stated that "hey, yo, the social safety net is failing the people it should be helping and they're having to go on SSDI now because of it." Of course, Republicans now want to kick people off SSDI (and the rural poor will continue to vote for them) but what else is new.

I'm listening to NPR One, and they just ran an archive episode that was basically "But wait, what if paying a living wage and getting rid of tips is a BAD idea?" The argument was basically that tipping helps offset the jealousy that waitstaff feel by serving us while we're having fun (which is why you tip at bars but not at supermarkets).

For anyone on the fence about Planet Money, listen to the latest episode from the last day or two - it's about public servants who we all thought were heroes but are really just schlubs RAKING IN THE CASH for doing NOTHING most of the time. They showed up to an emergency call for no reason and rushed by our intrepid reporter and her fake-rear end accent! They asked for $75/year from all the six-figure tech guys buying $2m bungalows, gently caress them. e: 2016 update let us all know that the free market housing situation saved their asses for the time being, all is well for the moochers... but for how long??? This is something that is coming up a lot in Canada in the Jian Ghomeshi trial and the idea of a "perfect victim." How should a rape survivor act in order to be taken seriously? And why is rape seemingly unique in that the actions of the survivor afterward can cast aspersions on whether or not the crime actually happened? People react to trauma differently and in unique ways and that seems beyond the understanding of others.
