the fact that republican primary voters are insane heathens chanting for blood is not new information, a lot of what hurt Romney in 2012 was insane statements he had to make in the primary and was unable to convincingly walk back in the general the difference is that they're four years madder now and the establishment vote was splintered with the nutjob contingent united rather than the reverse trump is Romney: a candidate beloved by less than half the party but with no credible alternative the establishment feels much more entitled to the support of the base than vice versa, hence all of the pants-making GBS threads we're seeing lately compared to the grumpy acquiescence of four years ago

I've thought since the beginning he was angling for a vp spot. It definitely came across like that in the early debates, his hesitancy to criticize other candidates, the narrow focus on a few states with little potential to scale up and become nationally competitive. I don't think he would have chosen Trump as his pick for #1 on the ticket but it would be consistent with the long arc of his campaign.
