Why does every recruiter expect I put in my two-weeks notice prior to the background check completing? I don't have a criminal background but I'd prefer things to be set in stone before I change ships.

No resignation until you've got an offer in writing. What's the thread's take on 50k salary in Austin? That sounds below market to me. Bummed considering it's totally one of the best tech companies in the area

That's exactly why I always answer "What's your availability?" with "Two weeks after I've accepted an offer in writing". I can't imagine putting in notice without something pretty loving solid in hand.

Judge Schnoopy posted:How does this fall on help desk? What are you supposed to do, battle Reddit? Find the people responsible? Are people putting in tickets because the Reddit thing made them forget their password? We are the only "computer people" in the company. We are supposed to "Protect our Brand, and refute any disingenuous information posted by the account." We are all doing this, and only 2 people are being kept behind to deal with Customer Service fixing computer things. This will continue until the subpoena goes through. Our internal structure for Tech is all hosed up, there is no "Higher" tier the help desk, just guys who know how to fix problems who show up that day. We don't have a Ticket System. Customers are sent to us moments before their exam and we've got a timer. We fix the problem before the timer ticks down or they don't take their exam and reschedule, though I use the word ticket sometimes to try and explain my job.

If you don't have a social media department, that sounds more like a marketing or PR function to me. Who handles your company facebook account? I would try to deflect it to them. edit: the needs of the business prevail in the end, I just think there are other people who might be better suited.

Sounds like 'replying to Reddit posts smearing the company' should be handled by marketing, not help desk. Yeah it's Reddit but it doesn't take a computer guy (nor should it be left to one) to speak for the company publicly. Unless they're forcing you because you're nerds and they know you're less likely to be downvoted to hell for sounding too corporate.

If you stick in this thread and others long enough, you will find your way out of hell. Get your A+ already. Set a date. Save up some money and pay for it. Buy a book and read it cover to cover. Skim over stuff you already know well, memorize all the stupid poo poo. Complete one of those free Python courses or any other language. Start playing with Powershell. Get the gently caress out.

Teaching myself JavaScript right now and I've got the CompTIA A+ scheduled for June. I'm on my way out right now, it's just that I need somewhere to go. The long and short of it is that the Company President doesn't want to hire a Social Media specialist, and is pretty up there in age. When I tried to talk to him about it he just yelled at me, as far as he's concerned he has a "Team of Technical Experts. You said you knew Computers so get out there and fix this mess!" I felt like pointing out for the third time this month that none of us are out of College, and make less then 15 /hr. Not too mention I'm like 75% sure it's someone on the Tech Team doing it, I found Tor installed on one of the work computers. It's just a huge pain in the rear end to deal with. I'm going to ask them about it tomorrow, tell them to knock it off and delete the account. I'll try to spin it into a promotion or something saying the tech needs leadership bla bla bla. I need out of this job. e: Before I went home today, I sent out an E-mail that was just Reddit's privacy policy, pointing out that your IP is logged when you create an account, and Reddit hands that IP over when subpoena'd really quick. If the account and posts get deleted, we'll call that square. I have no idea what's standard, but I'm not dealing with Customers so I guess that's a win? I have a fairly good background in network security but I have gotten to the point now where I feel like I have to learn C++/ Python to further myself. Now I have self taught myself by downloading various training movies via torrent and have even used http://www.professormesser.com/ I seem to have a way harder timer learning programming as my ADD keeps kicking my rear end whenever I sit down to learn it I end up going 10 different directions and learning a lot but very little about programming. Anyone have an ADD friendly way to learn programming? also where in the world do you change the picture that appears under your name? I have gone through everything in the control panel and can't seem to find it.

My question boils down to market salary in exchange for stellar benefits/culture. Not having to pay for insurance premiums, meals, and a gym membership could make up the difference. Would it make sense to think about the recognition? My initial reaction is that doing an awesome thing at a so-so company beats doing something decent at an "amazing" company. I'll still probe deeper because I figure why not. Also curious to get a good handle on what doors could be opened, like what's the potential upward mobility or lateral internal movement.
