The thing about bad fanfiction doing this is that the purpose behind it is significantly different. Namely, to mentally fellate the author at the expense of the story. Whereas on this show, whenever this is done I've always seen it lead to an event of note (such as Silver confronting Flint over it on the boat and him letting him in his head because of it, which leads to Silver talking Flint out of that escape attempt, that prolly wouldn't have worked and would've killed him). Similarly, I'm pretty sure there were swathes of people going: "Why all the gay poo poo? This is slash fiction lol!" during Season 2, but it too was important to establish that when people Flint cares about get taken from him, he tends to go quite berserk and that this is the chief reason for him waging this war in Season 3 over Barlow, rather than his initial rationalizing: "I am your King" reason in Season 1. All that being said, I do agree that the focus has been on Flint a bit much during this season and if you don't find his character the main interest of the show, then yea, you're getting a raw deal lol. Personally, I really liked Billy's change during Season 2, that comes from his torture, and kinda hope to see more from him. Hell, his line: "And I'm just here waiting until this story starts to make sense again." could easily be argued as a 4th-wall breaker, if you're not a fan of Flint's.

Man that intercut of Anne literally killing the messenger was a great reminder what a stone cold badass she is. Expected a little more from the duel between Flint and Blackbeard but it was good. I guess it wasn't supposed to feel epic, but they could have made it moreso. I did notice some great sound work in everything that went on the beach there, so kudos to you sound Goon. Next episode: Rogers: Rackham, I'm going to see you executed! Rackham: Would you mind doing it publicly, with tickets sold for prime seating, in a large venue. Also please kill me in a manner that has never been done before...oh and have someone ready with a plaque to denote the location of the precise spot for future persons to come and see. Thanks!

A funny thing about Blackbeard is that every time he's portrayed in movies and TV shows he's always too old. He never made it to 40.

Another weak episode in a string of them. Standard Black Sails fare though. Open the season strong with lots of ship goodness and then settle in for a stretch of people trapped on islands and constantly shifting factions vying boringly for power, then usually pick it up for the season finale when something is allowed to happen again. (But no important characters will die.) Is anyone actually rooting for Flint or Blackbeard or Jack or Woodes Rogers or bloody Max or...? Positives: I still sit through the theme song. That beach where the really disappointing duel happened was pretty. I liked the scene where the sail lashing fell apart - that was nice and ship-based. Flint's shaved head is still rad.

Personally, I'm rooting for Woodes Rogers. He seems so nice and gentlemanly. If only these mean ole pirate manchildren would cut him some slack. Seriously, tho, I like that one can legit root for whoever they like most and won't have some grognard jump down their throat with a: "Why aren't you rooting for Stannis the Mannis?!"

I thought this was a pretty good episode. I liked Silver and the Princess' bit where she told him that it is not weakness to accept help. I feel like that is going to come back around with Silver again in the future.

I hope Woodes Rogers doesn't give the Spanish their gold upfront. If they're planning on torching the island anyway, he'd might as well keep it. Send a messenger ahead to Cuba saying that they recovered most of the gold but its going to take a few days to load and arrange an escort for, however it appears that some pirates ran off with a relatively small share of gold they traded for pearls/gems for portability. If the Spanish have a problem with that, tell them to gently caress off and they can get nothing. Either they are satisfied to get most of their gold back (that they lost in the first place) or they get none of it back and start a fresh war with England. I don't see why the English need to pay the Spanish to come kick their asses.

I'm hoping for a English/Pirate team up against the Spanish and then as part of the agreement Woodes is run off

After asking if they would go to the Outerbanks last week, it was nice to see they do go to Ocracoke Island this week. I was hoping we would get that 'biggest pirate party of all-time' since Flint showed up, but no luck. meristem posted:That post was mostly a result of my sudden reflection, 'why am I watching a show about pirates going through romances, daddy issues and pondering their lifetime legacy? I know this is what I call a bubble gum show (I am not expecting Mad Men here, just something on or above Vikings level), but good chance I wouldn't like it without the daddy issues, romances, and legacy stuff. Honestly the only complaint I've had about this season so far was keeping Flint away from Nassau for so long. Also I'm try to convince all my metal head friends pirates are cool than vikings. Better weather (outside of hurricanes), better drink, better parties, and none of that Odin religious stuff. Only bad thing about pirates is the short life span. Edit: Also I would have to say most of the acting is pretty stellar on this show, which puts it above Vikings in quality. nate fisher fucked around with this message at 15:31 on Feb 29, 2016 |

I forget to mention it at the time, but I was all about that scene a week or so ago where Flint was like "Oh poo poo. Rogers is doing exactly what Thomas and I wanted to do. Should I stop him? Yes." Also, I actively cheered when Vane saved Flint this week.

I also sort of wondered how Teach did so well considering he had just been grazed by a pistol ball, unless it didn't really hurt him all that much and he just meant to act like it did to make Flint think he had an advantage. Vane continues to be the biggest badass on the show

Teach comes off as more of a dick, because his being a pirate is less so about ideology through pirates, started by poo poo that was taken from him, as it is with Flint's and now also Vane's path (him being a former slave and all), and moreso about adding to the legacy of the pirate account for its own sake. And because of that piece of shrapnel, the only way he can do that in a way that will last is through worthy followers that are sufficiently like him, which is why he's always been so fixated on grooming Vane. Of course, as Flint points out during their sitdown - none of it (the fleet from Nassau and the pirates on it) ever was his to begin with. He just figured he'd give the old days, when it looked like strength of will alone would be enough to carry you and you could steal all you needed, one last shot in his autumn years by taking advantage of a crisis. On the one hand, a lot of the things he says are true. But on the other, his way of what to do with those things offers little perspective for anyone's future, his own included. I think your first mistake might have been the line of thinking that "cool" has to be in any way based in reality. Perhaps that's where you and the people you're trying to convince don't see exactly eye-to-eye.

People ITT have often gone on about cast members going shirtless on screen, but lemme just be the first to say god-DAYUM to Ray Stevenson's chest. I now cannot help but imagine a man with that chest, Billy Bones' amazing forearms AND Silver's charming looks (legs too, for that pirate flair). The ultimate hulking pirate voltron.
