Interestingly, the exact opposite sequence is a viable thing.
You can use a laser to trigger a Z-pinch, creating an extremely strong X-ray burst, that initiates a thermonuclear reaction in a target.

You don't just toss cargo onboard with your grabby hands willy-nilly, that will unbalance your weight distribution and you'll crash your ship trying to exit the station. Physics is a bitch.

I Saved PC Gaming

Trying to eff(g0rf)t post, but... the mess is too far gone... I am trying conceptualize how turrets SHOULD work in the SC universe. As they are now, I can't even believe it was implemented. It's literally like having a calculator to solve a complex math problem in space or you die, and then eating it and pulling out a piece of paper and a pencil. Why? Star Citizen is set 900 years in the future and Chris created a world that is more like maybeee 100 years ahead with massive technological set backs (apparently) or just plain dumb decisions. Auto turrets must exist because they exist in 2016 (and have for sooo much longer). The reason they exist are many fold:

1) No risk of human causality.
2) Unparalleled speed and accuracy
3) No fatigue, panic, fear, just coldly directed death

The problem: If attacked, in SC, a player must run to a turret spot, hit USE and then wait for the player model to get into a seat, boot up, and then begin to manually track and shoot at a target. That is some astronomically nonsensical game play. Auto turrets could already be firing, mere mili-seconds after the hull is struck. Alternatively, a player can sit in a turret for hours doing nothing. Whee!

Computers in 900 years should be track targets with ease from 10,000 km out and beyond... with zero human interaction, a slow human analogue sitting in a chair trying to score hits seems like the dumbest of all solutions. No one would do this, ever. A pirate with one computer controlled turret would be far superior to a capitol ship with a dozen human controlled turrets. "Oh, do you have to guess how far to lead that Vanduul warship with your human brain?"

Once computers can fly planes and drive cars with 99.9% accuracy, no human will be allowed to do this anymore since the disadvantages are too great (lots of mistakes/death).

Solution:

So, how do we fix it and add fun?

Death should almost be certain to anyone hostile at a great distance from a capitol ship. If a group of raiders 2-5000 km out attack, your ship would automatically start spewing thousands of projectiles and laser beams into space. They would take heavy causalities just getting close. Once they are within a certain distance, well, things would get interesting! They would start to jam your turrets, send false signatures randomly, and drop phantom heat signatures everywhere to confuse your auto defenses and missiles... but again, only when with a certain distance, a "hot zone" if you will. I am only guessing at the distances, but the goals of any attacker is to stay close:

This shows where a capitol ship wants attackers to be:

Green and yellow are highly dangerous for a pirate... red is the sweet spot where an attacker can fully utilize countermeasures.

This feature provides major incentives to all parties during the attack:

1) The attacker is greatly incentivized to stay close to the target during the entire battle, slipping into the yellow or green zones means less effective counter measures and a much higher potential for massive damage/death. He wants to get in very fast and hit hard. Running away will most likely get him killed, thus, the defender can be sure there won't be many 'hit and runs' attempted on them to wear them down slowly. Attacks must be highly coordinated, and you can get wiped very easily if there isn't a solid plan when taking on a capitol ship. (as opposed to just out flying a slow manual turret)
2) The defender is greatly incentivized to stay away from their attacker and let the turrets do their job. Manual turret-ting will be possible, but so inefficient it's kind of a last resort when turrets are too confused/jammed/damaged to be more effective than a human's interference. Multi crews will still need to run around and fix stuff (downed turrets, shield generators, etc)
3) The defender is greatly incentivized to buy the best scanners and hire a skilled radar tech to watch their back. This role is highly specialized and would take dozens of hours to perfect.

This gives both sides an amazing amount of tactical opportunities for each battle. Debris, moons, asteroid fields would provide cover or confuse turrets and scanners... less skilled attackers could stay at a distance, thus drawing fire away from better, more skilled attackers... implement the ability to disable turrets with heavy direct fire, or to providing 'cover' for your buddies by dropping your jammers at the right time and aggro-ing the turrets... I can't imagine how fun that would be if they did it right.

Get newbies to buy thick shields and soak up the damage while lighter, faster experienced players go in close with minimal shielding, big guns, and hit hard.

Capitol ships can choose to buy a few different scanning systems (all massively large, too large for smaller craft, or the range is just insanely larger).

Classes of scanner are by:
Weight
Range
Space taken up in your ship
Speed of signature identification (important)
Zoom and deep scan factor

So, my gameplay looks something like this:

A multi crew player watches a radar-like screen for object signatures. You have to be really good at this, like almost the leader of a raid in any MMO.. good at communication, and quick, on the fly changes... asteroids, space debris, comets, and other neutral/friendlies ships will appear as tiny signatures, as well as any hostile threat. Hot objects will be circled... anything with heat is called out, and so an experienced player could ignore the other things (for now). "What are those?? It's moving fast and has a decent heat range... like maybe a hornet engine?" You would need to know the spces of other ships and you could even get good enough to recognize quirks and tells from different ship types and manufacturers... "That isn't a comet!!!! Battlestations!"

So all objects appear as blue or grey or whatever... neutral... out to a certain distance. Once in range, the computer goes to work IDing all the junk on display and calling out (with text) what stuff is, labeling it for you. Rocks are grey, friendlies are green, debris are yellow, etc etc... you could even set up your radar to "ignore" cold grey objects and really highlight anything moving a certain speed, anything that changes direction suddenly, or high heat.

Additional gameplay: Cloaking (not invisibility)
You might see errata or "dead zones" on the scope, and then a player must "zoom in" on that area for a deeper scan possibly losing sight of the larger picture (can you say trojan horse). It could be a "cloaked" craft, (say someone is mining and doesn't want to be disturbed), a pirate in wait, or simply a space anomaly giving off weird particles. You have to figure that out quickly by looking its speed, heat, and whatever other factors you want. Now, cloaked ships aren't really invisible, just jamming the area around their ship so their ID cannot be made cleanly and so they can possibly get closer without being ID'ed. You see a ship coming at you and you need to decide if it is a miner who left his jammer on by accident or a pirate with foul intentions. Heck, throw in a zoom function on your cockpit screen where you can click and drag a square and it will zoom 10, 100, or 1000k to see if you can find out what is coming at you by sight if need be. The radar tech can call out a sector and have the pilot zoom in to get a visual on it. Say a pirate had a top of the line cloaker and could get within 200km without being ID'ed... well pull him up on screen and focus your peepers on him. Again, tons of amazing possibilities here.

Pirates/raiders (or whoever wanted it)would use radar cloaking tech or poor/new pirates could simply hide behind large objects (they would still get scanned and appear on radar but the distance from where they would be ID'ed would be greatly reduced.. Staying away from large pockets of debris or asteroids would be a good idea for larger ships, and any pilot worth his salt would recognize easy places to get ambushed along trade routes.

Example: You (capitol ship laden with goods) are flying near a small moon to take advantage of its gravity pull for an easy fuel boost, and once you are within a few hundred km a warning sounds out! BRZZZT! Hostile inbound. Well, now he's in your hot zone with his buddies and the fight is much harder. If he had been in open space (say there is no place to hide), he could have been cloaked... you would have seen a weird signature start moving in your direction, and without further scanning he would been able to sneak up on you and your lazy radar technician. If your tech was alert, he would have seen the anomaly, zoom scanned it and the pirate would have lit up like a Christmas tree and the turrets would go to town, or the pirate could (wisely) just move away. Once a hostile is ID'ed beyond your safe zone, you could literally text a photo of your smug grin to him as you sped by.

OR OR OR

You could have manual turrets with long interaction animations.
