I think none of the characters work in any non-riffing-on-the-radio context, because they aren't loving real characters. Even the most basic children's cartoon character has more depth than Chip or Edgar. They all boil down to "unfiltered Jim Norton loving around in a silly voice."

I think he's gone all-in with trying to get favor and status on the right in case his talk show isn't as successful as he wants it to be without the political angle. I can't believe some of his recent stances are how he truly thinks, like with climate change. I could be wrong but I don't ever remember him voicing an opinion on that during the O&A years. He's obviously pro-gun and anti-rich-tax, so maybe he just figured why not go whole hog right-wing and let the rest fall into predictable lines? Maybe the company he keeps since leaving Sirius has just broken him. I got a hoot hearing Gavin McInnes on Joe Rogan's podcast. On SEVERAL occasions he blurts out something which is clearly factually wrong, and he says it with such certainty that it makes you doubt yourself when you hear it. Joe calls him out on it once or twice and it gets played for a joke but he really needed to call him out more just to show the stone-faced falsehoods of some of these political talking heads, of which Anthony seems to have become one of.

I don't have a problem with the terrible animation in the chip cartoon, shows like Xavier and early South Park looked terrible, but was hilarious. The problem is that Jim totally underestimated how hard it is to write for animation, he didn't get a writer and it seems like he wrote it with Kenny while driving to his shows. Also, Chip is not a main character, he's a Kramer and the show is lacking a Seinfeld to keep it grounded.

Somehow the show is the worst it's ever been, yet I'm more entertained by O&A now than any point in it's history. What's next? Opie outed as the Gilgo Beach Killer. Jimmy's been a heroin addict for the last 2 years? Ant gets AIDS? I'm not ruling anything out at this point.
