Agree 100% on this - I passed my driver's test the first time, mainly because it was all simple stuff I could memorize since the books rarely change year to year.

My actual road test? I don't think I covered a mile driving, it was literally driving through the neighborhood next to the DMV, typical stop/look/be aware, parallel parking and backing into a spot, and basics like adjusting mirrors/seat and putting on the seatbelt before starting the car. I was actually pretty glad in high school that I had a couple week driver's ed course, they covered way more than what the actual driving test did like driving around town in key areas (downtown, interstate, residential/business areas) and spending 20-30 minutes a couple days each week on the road. Even went into more detail on stuff the driver's manual covered in case anyone was confused, wasn't an expensive course, and ended up netting me a pretty decent discount on insurance being a new driver.

I'd feel better if more high schools required teenagers 16 and over to complete a driver's ed course on top of taking their licensing test. That, and mandatory written/driving tests and physical evaluations of people over 65 every 2 years because most of those dementia-ridden, no-reflex-having, half-blind, half-deaf old geezers need to stay off the drat road.

Back where I'm from in Manitoba, if you were under 18 and wanted your license, you had to do drivers ed. It was honestly pretty useless for me (farm kid, I've driven things since I was like 5), but a lot of people there had never been behind the wheel. Ever. It was loving terrifying. My future children will all have some sort of driving education starting as young as possible, so by the time they get to drive - a) its not as big of a deal and b) they actually loving know how

lovely drivers are terrible car stuff.

This is how it was in Texas when I got my license. I didn't even have to take a road test to get my license at 16.

Personally, I think we should enact a 3 strikes rule. If you manage to run into another car 3 times, no more driving for you.

I'm pretty sure that IL you need driver's ed if you are under 18. And you need a certain amount of experience driving around with a parent (or getting them to sign the paper saying that you did!), though I'm not certain getting training from a parent is the best way to go.*

*In my motorcycle class, they had a stat showing that people who were taught to ride by a friend were much more likely to have an accident than those that taught themselves because the friend would teach bad habits.

The friend who taught me how to ride learned from his Dad, who was an MSF instructor. He stuck very close to the MSF course.

Definitely an anomaly, though.

In California, you don't even have to take a practical test to get a motorcycle learner's permit. You can show up, read the pamphlet in 20 minutes, take a written exam, and then go buy a Hayabusa. I have, no lie, seen a crashed 'busa on Craigslist for part-out with four miles on the clock.

In WA, if you are under 18, you have to take a paid Driver Training course, average cost $500. Then the licensing test is run by the same company for another $50.
I have paid this twice now for 2 kids. If they waited until 18, then no course required, but everyone kid I know that did not take the test drives like poo poo. Plus there is an insurance discount if you take the course which almost pays for itself.

It's all in the prep. if you're just halfassing it to get it our of primer or whatever go with the single stage. doesn't even have to be black, you could feasibly to just a coat of single stage red and just polish it good.

That crossed my mind too. My biggest worry isn't the prep, its being able to get the multiple coats down without tons of crap getting in it.

The terrible car stuff is that in America you can get a license in an automatic and then just go out and buy a manual car.

Here in the UK you cant drive a manual without a manual license that requires X number of certified training hours.

Like seriously, give someone a license that lets them legally go out and drive a car they have no loving idea how to control :psyduck:

I'll have you know that I had to learn how to drive stick in a literal snow storm with 5 minutes of coaching from my dad and I turned out fine... :smug:

But yeah, I would've loved a bit more training, learning stuff like starting from a full stop on a rather aggressive, icy incline was pants shittingly terrifying when I had to do do it with a new BMW way too close behind me.

Over here you're not required to be specifically licensed for a manual car, but most driver's ed schools offer mt-specific content either for the same cost or a few dollars more (if it involves you doing more hours). Driver's ed is also compulsory, so in theory we could be churning out mostly mt-qualified drivers, but of course almost no one does it because :effort:.

I don't know if it's still the same, but in California you were able to get a learners permit when you were 15.5. You had to do 25 hours of classroom time plus another 6 hours of driving time with a certified instructor. Then once you got your permit you were only able to drive when someone in the car with you was 25 years or older and had to basically be a parent or guardian. You couldn't drive alone at any time.

You had to have this all done before you could take your driving test at the age of 16 and even then you had a provisional license. The provisional stated that, during the first year of obtaining your license, you couldn't transport anyone under the age of 20 and I may be wrong but I think there were certain hours you weren't allowed to drive during.

Although once you turned 18 none of this applied and you could apply for an unrestricted license.

Ugh... Terrible gas station things. Here in Jersey as you might be aware, we are required to have attendants pump our gas. Today I got a real winner who decided that he was going to pump till he hit an exact dollar amount despite the cutoff on the pump clicking over repeatedly. Sure enough I start smelling spilled fuel and there's a puddle of guzzoline forming under the car. I shouted, he was still going. I honked the car, still going. I had to get out of the car and take the nozzle away from the oblivious fuckstick who was watering the pavement in flammable liquids that I'm still paying for.

It's basically the same, except now the provisional license lasts until you're 20 or 21 (I can't remember) and you can't apply to have it removed any more, or you can just wait until you're 18 and instantly get a full license with no extra rules.

I think Texas changed the laws awhile back to where you can't get a license under 25 without drivers ed. Makes it really hard for a lot of college students to get a license.

Same, just the written test. But I went through drivers ed. The only catch was I had to prove I was either enrolled in school or had completed a GED program. I think now everyone has to take the driving test though, regardless of age or if they went through drivers ed.
