I think it's only debatably a misuse of the word political, but regardless it's clear you knew what I meant.

I disagree with the article you posted. There can be good and bad reasons for doing something. Poking Key in the eye, while satisfying, is a bad reason.

Ultimately, that's why I'm voting no too. I want a new flag. I just don't want a poo poo one that means nothing and looks like a second rate transport company's logo.

Yep, globalist as well. How close does that make the SA NZ contingent to being the full 7%?

But why is it a bad reason. I would vote no regardless of who started this, but it being JK is bonus. He is doing it to build his legacy, not because of some greater change as a nation or government. Poking him in the eye is a perfectly valid reason considering how vapid his reason is.

Egalitarian, supposedly centre left, but I vote the hell out of the Greens. Next is Globalist. gently caress, people over sell our political influence when we do nothing but rub up against the US and bully islanders and gently caress them up with poo poo meat. LOL SportsSportsSportsSportsSports.

If the numbers are to be believed, the current flag is here to stay with only the Patriots voting for it in large enough numbers to break 50%.

I got globalist too, it looks like the largest group is patriot (36%) and they seem pretty racist.

This is such a terrible argument for not changing flags. It is the left that has politicized the flag debate. I would have loved to have seen what you would have been saying if Helen Clark had proposed the idea.
If you don't think that a strapped flag nomination resulting in a winner that the PM himself shoulder-tapped for a referendum the majority of the population didn't want for which ultimately social services have been cut to fund isn't a political debate then you don't understand the argument.

And below,

I too got globalist (with egalitarian as 2nd), so we're getting closer and closer to filling up that 7%.

I don't accept that the left is solely to blame for making the flag referendum a partisan issue. Key was pushing for it like mad long before actual political figures on the left started making any great noise over it. It's come to be seen very strongly as his pet project, and rightly so, given the massive amount of money, time, and his own reputation and influence that he's poured into it.

I guess we'll see what comes of that; I, like most people here (I think), think the Lockwood flag looks like poo poo and intend to vote to keep the old one, but frankly I've never been the sort of person to unironically wave a flag, nor have I ever been particularly patriotic. So I rather suspect that this debate doesn't really concern me as an individual, or at least affect me all that much.

Okay well me being wrong in some limited situations doesn't change my overall point.
The flag is a symbol, and symbols soak up the personality of those who associate with them and use then. The fern for me means a butter company and a sports company and well corporations is general. The southern cross - well that too is a corporate symbol.

The new flag to me means corporate logo endorsed by John key who is a complete wanker, and looks like it has the national blue on it which I don't like either. Also, it's a poo poo flag - a fine corporate logo, but a poo poo flag.

I don't think voting against an icon or symbol or logo just because John key likes it is a bad argument - it's literally the only argument. You vote for or against the flag because of what the symbols represent, and the symbols represent nothing until they have been associated with something.

As an aside, read somewhere that John key considers this while exercise has having the silver lining that more people are flying flags like at their houses. Jesus christ patriotism is a loving cancer, of course he likes it as it's a tool of control.

What I'm getting from those distributions is that (if accurate) New Zealanders are a secular bunch of slightly racist, sports loving, weirdly closet socialist capitalists that for some reason love the Queen.

Sounds legit.

Chalk up another member of the 7% here, btw.

This is a bad opinion, the flag change is just as much a political tool for National as it is for the left. The process was a mess - the panel were more or less political appointees whose decisions were as transparent as mud and it resulted in John Key's two favourite designs beside two godawful options that no one would go for.

Voting against it for political reasons is perfectly acceptable.

God that is a bad piece.

Between then and now the leaders of the left have persuaded their supporters to oppose the process, criticise the cost, condemn the timing, question the motives, mock the alternative, and to vote "no change" in order to embarrass a political rival.

They really put me in a bind when they asked me which I least associated with New Zealand - the ball from an English sport, our national team in an English sport, or the literal monarch of our country who happens to also be English.

I don't even know if I'm gonna vote at all, I hate them both. That finalist was really badly thought out because even people who hate the old flag aren't gonna vote the new one because it looks almost exactly the same. On top of all the other reasons.
