Was anyone else completely sucker-punched by the Paramilitary Escort upgrade turning one of your dudes traitor? We spent an entire game playing with the terrible basic soldier just so we could get him the overpowered looking upgrade, and then not only do we lose the soldier we also lose the upgrade! Now we have to decide who is less poo poo at killing zombies - the colonel or the virologist
Yep! We just got to this last weekend.

Pandemic Legacy spoilers through September.
That was a really awful twist. Story wise it was fine, but it made us lose our most used and most-upgraded character (Quarantine Specialist) with absolutely no warning or way to avoid it.

I know this is a board game and not an RPG, but they share several elements. This is basically your DM saying "roll d4 to see which one of you instantly dies". I'd never play with that DM again. There are much better ways to introduce risk, surprise and loss.

In addition, we had already completed two secondary objectives and were very close to curing all of the diseases. Oh, except tear up the objective you've already met, and here's another one that may be impossible to complete if you didn't know you were supposed to save your Military Base city cards. When the twist happened, we went from a fairly confident victory to being mathematically eliminated.

I feel like it was a really poor design decision to spring both of those twists mid-session, rather than between months.

Everyone at the table was really bummed out, but we kept playing despite realizing that the game had become impossible to win. All we could do was watch the board deteriorate, and we didn't feel like it was any fault of ours (unlike our previous two losses).

When we ran into an unavoidable CODA chain outbreak, we decided to call the game with 5 cards left in the player deck. So I guess we technically cheated, but given the mood at the table by that point, I think the alternative was not finishing the season, ever.

It left a really bad mark on an otherwise great game. I'm sure other people enjoyed the September twist, but it very nearly ruined the game for my group.

I think it's a direct call out to the older "rebellion" pc 4x game that empire at war is also based on. Incidentally both empire at war and rebellion are in the current humble bundle. Rebellion is extremely good despite its incredible jank levels and is on the $1 tier, so worth checking out if you liked empire at war.

I loved Empire at War. I have fond memories of trolling the Empire player constantly by snatching worlds out from under him in the middle of building big things.

The expansion pack was almost impressive at how broken the third faction it introduced was.

We're in a similar boat as you, actually. Currently we can't get enough of Fields of Arle, as some have mentioned in this thread already. Patchwork for something adorable and chill -- I mean, who doesn't like putting tiles on a board and fitting puzzle pieces together?

Also you have committed the greatest travesty by not owning Tash-Kalar. Repent to our lord and savior Vlaada at once.

(We like it a lot because it's very spatial and exercises a different part of your brain compared to other board games, so that could be hit-or-miss for you.)

Hi! And Nice! I don't own any of these, and I definitely will look into Tash-Kalar. We both love Vlaada. I think now that she's, like, got the bug, I think she'll be into Dungeon Lords and Galaxy Trucker. Gonna see about getting those to the table soon, maybe some Castles of Burgundy too.....

He actually seems lukewarm on it and has what looks like legitimate analysis of various mechanics and how those will affect your experience. Yeah some of their reviews are trash, and they seem to like to suck Plaid Hat's cock, but there really didn't seem to be anything wrong with this review. The only thing I'm left wondering is how on earth you could make this a 4 player game, and whether or not that aspect of it was tacked on at the last moment to sell more copies, which is what I suspect.

Played some games with 2 players this evening:

1) Glass Road
What a great game. It is everything I hoped it would be. Interesting choices and the card play to generate resources is a ton of fun. And all that in an hour. Really great game. Looking forward playing it with 4 players.

2) Inhabit the Earth
Holy poo poo is that a thinky game. It looks so cute and stuff but the choices and decisions you have to make are kind of overwhelming. It was our first playthrough and I think it will get better with repeated plays. Loved it and I hope I can get it to the table more often and with more players.

3) San Juan
I like it. It's nothing special but I found it to be a really relaxing little card game. I can see it as an opening game to a longer gaming session.

The team mechanics look a bit clunky. It might develop into an interesting metagame but that's probably group dependent which isn't a great selling point.

Food Chain Magnate is really good. We were all sort of unconvinced during the Intro game (which we stopped midway through), but now that we're a few turns into a real game, everything is fitting together and making sense. We've all taken different openings; while I'm sure eventually our early plays will settle into some ruts, the game just seems really open and ready to reward all sorts of different play. I was concerned that the ads and production and distances and everything would be fiddly, but it actually resolves out really clear. And it plays reasonably fast too because many of the decisions are made during the simultaneous play part, and you can pre-plan your turn fairly well (it really helps that marketing sort of "lags" a turn, meaning you don't have to think through every possible marketing play the last player could make).

And thanks to whoever posted the "folded paper rack in box" trick. Just took a minute to do, and makes the employee cards a lot easier to manage.

Our work group just recently got FCM, Twilight Struggle, and Keyflower - and at home I've got a group playing Pandemic Legacy; what a good time to be into board games.

Oh, I thought we were only suggesting games you don't have yet (which is why I didn't bring up Race for the Galaxy, Twilight Struggle, etc.).

Bit of warning about Dungeon Lords at 2 -- I own the game and I've only played one game at 4, but I've read it doesn't play that great at 2. I haven't tried it, but their AI player implementation doesn't sound terribly fun or interesting. The manual definitely recommends that you play your first couple games at 4, though.

Let's talk about where you're going.
Picked up Fields of Arle based on the generally glowing reviews here and just finished my first solo game.

Really chill game. My first moves took me forever to choose - you just have so many options. Eventually figured out what I wanted to do and ended up with a score of 94.5. I really want to give it a try with someone else. My only complaint is how much of a pain in the rear end cleanup is.

Finally played Pax Pamir tonight. I had a pretty good setup to win in two regimes and my buddy stumbled rear end backwards into victory via economic boom because he had an impact card in his hand when I mentioned that was the regime he could win in. It took a while to get going but when it picked up it got good. Kind of hard to make any judgments after one play but I thought it was pretty cool.

Then we played Venture which is one of my Sid Sackson games that I bought out of curiosity and interest in his place in boardgaming history. It has a really neat set collection aspect, buying corporations with various color and letter combinations, but you draw money cards from a deck which is really underwhelming compared to a lot of modern games. I think it's fun but it has some balance problems. It could be great with a modern update. My same friend won although he definitely earned that one.

I also got my first game of this in tonight. It was a bit odd because no one took Afghans off the start (4p game) and the two British players conspired to militarily dominate. The game was won on the second topple on a triple tiebreaker spy by a player who wasn't even loyal to the dominating empire. There's a lot to consider, but it's a fun game.

First game of FCM. 4 players, I finished with $610, next closest was $210.

I posted 330 bucks on one sale in the final round. I had the person who adds +10 to a unit price, and was the only person able to fill a 4 beer, 1 pizza garden house. That's 200 dollars base, then 20 on top (+5 to every drink order filled), then another 110 for CFO bonus.

Overall everyone really enjoyed it and we were all able to identify some things that we'd do different on our next playthrough. There were some excellent back-stabbing moments though, and some surprise miscalculations that were pretty entertaining as well.

My game was weird because it was three players and we each chose a different loyalty at the beginning. We also only had one purple card in the opening market so we didn't see much development on the board or money exchanging hands for several turns. At least I know what is going on now.

It's interesting that going over the tableau limit can be useful if only to discard a card to send enemy spies back. The special action combo chaining off of multiple regime changes is pretty cool too.

Yeah, the Afghan player moved a spy onto one of my cards with an Afghan loyalty prize so I just played over my tableau size and discarded the card. It's also fun to grab a card from the market just for rupees and/or a garrison impact and then just let it die. We didn't have the opportunity for any regime change combos but I can see how that will be beneficial.
