These PT boats think better of tangling with an invasion force. They do cause our force to withdraw though.

We continue to sweep north.

Buna is hit once more.

Double Clunk!

Three more torpedoes bounce off the ship before one explodes. Then the Sub captain machine guns the ship in anger.

We clear another of those small islands in the south.

The operation to clean up the south of China continues.

Changsha should fall soon. As long as out troops don't tire themselves out walking over Chinese bodies.

A battle for Hankow is about to begin it seems.

A few more bases fall to our troops, and in China, both sides are concentrating their forces into major sized stacks.

Dammit!

I then spend half an hour moving ships and troops around, as a commanders job is never done.

I have come to discourse on the profound inequities of the American political system.

So, let's recap:

In 4 months, Grey has

1. Mostly finished up the Phillipines about a month ahead of schedule.
2. Is working on Singapore, may finish about a month ahead of schedule
3. Sunk exactly zero carriers, and even worse, sunk basically nothing at Pearl that isn't going to get replaced immediately
4. Is making ok progress in China
5. Is a little behind in Burma, but this front is basically a stalemate regardless.
6. Has done basically nothing in the DEI

I probably missed a few things, but in my own humble judgement, Japan is doing worse than historical. This is gonna be a loooong 3 years if Grey can't start making serious steam.

On the Intelligence screen there's a line for the Manchukuo garrison. You need to keep it over 8000 AV strong to keep them uninterested.

As well as what Goatface said, they'll also automatically activate on August 1st 1945 to simulate the Soviets finishing off the Nazis and then pivoting to deal with the Japanese

Does it always happen on that date? It could be interesting if there was a slight random factor as to when the war in Europe ends, so that it might end early in the beginning of april or so, thus activating the Soviets against Manchuria around 1st of july, or if it drags on into june the Soviet entry will be correspondingly delayed.

Also the KB is sitting in a tiny port trying to refuel to get back to a big port and properly refuel. So for the next few days / week the mightiest navel force in the Pacific is stuck.

It looks to be a dull day, so I'm at least taking one screenshot!

Phew!

Our Chungking force is going the long, but safe way around. This base is still worth 20 points to us!

At Changsha we destroy a good number of enemy squads.

Cleaning up these smaller units is going to take a while.

I don't think the Allies are really in any position to do anything to anyone in north-eastern China, even if it's just "scratching" the garrison there.

If a human Allied player is against the Japanese AI, the Soviets will only ever activate on that date.

If a human Japanese player is against either the Allied AI or another human Allied player, the Soviets will activate on that date, or whenever the Manchukuo garrison drops below 8 000 AV, whichever comes first.

Mans posted:

Land combat was broken enough in the original WITP that a feasible all-in strategy for the Japanese player at one time was to commit most of his divisions to an invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 and win on points that way.

In this game though? No, not really.

No, but the Soviet offensive is a shadow of its IRL counterpart because the game AI can't reproduce the advanced Soviet strategy of 1945, and because the land battle model is simplistic and doesn't account for the factors that led to the Kwantung collapse. It's possible to stalemate them long enough to achieve a technical victory for sure.

This place could make a nice airbase for the strike south.

drat Vildebeest.

I've learned this is as far south as I can go unsupported.

I normally ignore these attacks, but the gunners get lucky.

We pick off a nice troop laiden ship heading to Port Moresby.

You'd lose a whole lot less cargo ships if you'd run them as convoys with at least one destroyer escort. That way, subs don't do gun runs on them.

Japan gets a boatload of escorts and submarine chasers that are actually better than DDs at protecting convoys and are awful at literally anything else, so there's no reason not to protect your sea lanes.

Though I don't see any evidence that Grey isn't doing that.

This is a nice big target just leaving Pearl.

We hit her again in the evening.

We pick another ship off from that task force we hit yesterday.

I want this as a base, so we'll take the losses.

We hit an enemy force, but find them well dug in.

The battle for Hankow begins, and thank god I've been building forts like mad.

I'm almost ready to load up the Bataan forces – they are replacing their losses at a good rate, and while I can't afford to let them get to 100%, I can give them another day before getting them onto ships and moving south.
The Allies get a 400 point boost in base points from somewhere.

Ship losses have spiked in the last couple of days.

The problem is a lot of them have terrible range - most convoys run with some form of escort, but the long raider groups tend to have to go it alone.

As we push south we run into resistance.

We skip the (relevantly) heavily defended Medan for now, and continue to head north.

The tempo is picking up – one ship strikes a mine coming in, but we get troops ashore.

Another undefended base falls to our troops.

This can make a good air base – if I can get planes to it now.

The advance to moleman can begin.

Thats a good number of bases take today, and we have troops in place to attack others tomorrow – the loading of troops at Bataan is also beginning, and I'm going to bring in the Kido Butai to support the attack.

I am paying a price for it however.

Grrr.
