Space Flower posted:do you have cool bricks about, the Bf 109s~? The Messerschmitt Bf 109 first flew in 1935, and at the time was the most modern fighter airplane in the world. While not the first airplane to include retractable landing gear, a controllable-pitch propeller, enclosed cockpit, and stressed-skin aluminum construction, it was among the first to bring all of these features together. Despite personal animosity between German air ministry officials and its designer Willy Messerschmitt, the Bf 109 was selected over rival designs from Arado, Focke-Wulf, and Heinkel to become Germany's standard front-line fighter. Bf 109s and pilots were dispatched to the "Condor Legion" in Spain to assist the Nationalists under Franco in the Spanish Civil War, proving their superiority over French and Russian fighter designs, and creating a valuable pool of experienced pilots for the Luftwaffe once World War II began. These were mostly early model Bf 109B, C, and Ds with 650-750 horsepower engines. By the start of World War II in 1939, the Luftwaffe had begun to phase in the Bf 109E family, with a Daimler-Benz DB-601 engine producing 1,175 horsepower. This was a fast, maneuverable fighter, and superior to all the opposition it faced from the Allies until Dunkirk where it met the British Supermarine Spitfire for the first time. There were two persistent flaws - the first was the very narrow track landing gear, which retracted from the fuselage rather than the wing. This allowed the wing to be made lighter and detachable for heavy maintenance, but made ground handling a real challenge and a constant source of training accidents. The second flaw was range. With the defeat of France and Britain's retreat across the English channel, Bf 109s were tasked with escorting German bombers to pound the British into submission, but the fighters' endurance over England was barely 30 minutes, hampering any effort to destroy the Royal Air Force. With the unsatisfactory results of the Battle of Britain, the Luftwaffe and their Bf 109s were redirected to the east, to destroy the real enemy - the Soviet Union. The Bf 109 continued to evolve to support Germany's changing needs. The Bf 109F series increased power to 1,350 horsepower, again with a Daimler-Benz DB-600 series engine, and made changes to the wings, radiators, and armament. It was followed by the Bf 109G, with still more power, though at the expense of heavy controls and strong lateral torque from the big engine and propeller, which intensified pilot training problems. With the arrival of high-altitude American heavy bombers beginning in 1942, some Bf 109s also gained cockpit pressurization, although it appears this was something of a specialized feature and not widely produced. Others gained nitrous-oxide or water-methanol injection to boost engine output even further upwards - as high as 1,700 horsepower in some cases. Still, the Bf 109 was no longer dominant compared to ever-improving Allied and Soviet pilots and airplanes. The Luftwaffe had never fully committed to replacing it; a new "Me 209" design based on a pre-war air racer never panned out and gave way to experiments in jet propulsion, but these suffered many delays, requiring the Bf 109 to stay in production in order to plug the gap. The final major production variation was the Bf 109K, which was an effort to standardize on a variety of piecemeal Bf 109G improvements and detail changes. But by the time it entered production the Luftwaffe had run out of both pilots and fuel, and it had little tactical impact. Built for about ten years, the Bf 109 still stands as one of the most produced warplanes of all time, at around 34,000 in total. It flew on every front in which Germany was involved, and was provided to all of Germany's allies. Some interesting Bf 109 footnotes - a Bf 109T was designed as a naval fighter for Germany's planned aircraft carriers, none of which were completed. Some two-seat Bf 109 trainers were built to ease fresh pilots into the demanding late-model versions of the fighter, but it does not appear they saw widespread use. A "Twin Bf 109," called the Bf 109Z, with two fuselages joined together with a center wing section, reached the prototype stage before being cancelled. Spain purchased the rights to build the Bf 109G, but Germany's collapse prevented the Spanish from receiving any Daimler-Benz engines to put in them. After an inordinate amount of time trying to find a suitable replacement engine, the Spanish eventually installed the British Rolls-Royce Merlin, to create the Hispano HA-1112 Buchon. A few of these are still flying on the airshow circuit. Meanwhile, various Czech factories had been drafted to help build Bf 109s during World War II, and following the end of the war, they had enough leftover parts to keep doing so. Like the Spanish, however, they didn't have the right engines. They instead fitted the Junkers Jumo 211 from Heinkel bombers, to create the Avia S-99. These fighters were said to have rather poor performance, but in a bit of irony the new state of Israel got their hands on some, and flew them during their war of independence in 1947.
