Why do people on both sides of the aisle keep putting up the "Trump isn't actually rich" attack? Like I wouldn't be surprised if most of his wealth was tied up in nonliquid assets, but when a dude flies around the country campaigning from his own personal airliner the whole "He doesn't even have that much money!" thing feels hollow and meaningless.

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I can just head on down to the Boeing dealer this weekend and get a sick financing deal on a 747.

*757, Trump probably couldn't actually afford a 747. (Not that he'd want one).

Most people on both sides realize it's a pretty futile attack and you don't see alot of it.
Trump's brand of wealth is far more palatable to most American's then Mitt Romney, despite Trump being worth several times more then Romney on even the most conservative estimates. It's why Trump can get away with saying "I'm really rich" while Romney tried to hide from his wealth by tweeting a picture of him doing his own laundry, which seemed very hollow.

I can point to skyscrapers, hotels and casinos, and golf courses with Trump's name on it and say "Donald Trump built those and he employs thousands of workers".

With Romney the narrative was vulture capitalism, and his wealth was displayed in the forms of a car elevator to house his couple of cadillacs and some stock portfolios.

Also a significant amount of the wealth he claims to have is essentially just what he thinks his brand is worth, rather than nonliquid assets.

wasn't his argument that the "trump" brand is valued at like 4 billion loving dollars or something lol

it's funny because Michael Bloomberg really is insanely überwealthy, enough to buy and sell trump many times over, and having him in the race would probably trigger trump's insecurities even more. ultimately not worth it but funny to think about.

Bloomberg is worth about $40,000,000,000 for reference

No comment on whether he is/isn't a good businessman, but this is a really stupid/misinformed point. Those are mortgages, asset backed loans - that's how real estate development happens. Virtually nobody - GE building a manufacturing plant, federal governments developing public utilities, Trump building a casino, even private individuals who buy houses - doesn't use mortgages, because the rates are so low when there's a hard asset backing it. He may be a terrible businessman, but it's not bc he uses mortgages

The fact that Trump might actually be POTUS really tells you how lovely the democratic party in general and Hilary in particular actually is maybe if they had a platform other than tuned down GOP identity politics they wouldn't somehow be losing the country even though demographics overwhelmingly favors them
