That poor little guy probably thought he was fuckin' dead meat. Thankfully, humans are totally harmless to red pandas because as soon as a human sees one their heart jumps into their throat and an involuntary "awww" escapes their vocal cords.

Yeah some of the pandas I've seen at Chengdu have docked ears as well, so I wonder if it's something to do with predators or just the pandas horsing around.

Are there any specific reasons why some pandas have very bright/light orange backs, and some are much darker brown? The tail stripes are pretty varied too, with some having rings that are almost white, while others have rings that are almost black.

There are two distinct red panda subspecies, being the western red panda and the styan's red panda, though I haven't really seen consistent examples of what makes them different. Styan's red pandas are supposed to be larger and darker in color though. Aside from that is just regular genetic variation that becomes more apparent when you pore over thousands of different red panda pics I guess.
