A question about changing an object's color balance in Adobe Photoshop CC.



See that white, fuzzy portal outline? I want to change its Midtones and Highlights via the Color Balance tool. But whenever I adjust the sliders, absolutely nothing happens to the portal's color. It just stays white. What's going on with this layer? I created it using the Custom Shapes tool, then modified manually it using the Liquify filter.

You have a custom shape that's just plain white. There is no color in that light, and therefore there is no color balance to be affected. It doesn't have any "midtones" or "highlights" as far as PS is concerned because it's only white at various levels of opacity. The apparent midtones are a result of the layer being overlaid on the layers below. If you want to colorize it, the quickest and dirtiest way to do it would be with a Layer Style, like Outer Glow/Inner Glow or Satin.

Is there a goon recommended medium sized refillable notebook?

The non refillable ones I have now are unlabeled in size but appear to be about A5 or B6. I want two of about that size with dotted grid paper, but I'd settle for regular grid.

I've found the selection on Amazon to be limited, even more so if excluding what appear to be more costly, leather covers.

Does anyone use any kind of fixative for Prismacolor pencils? I'm used to Polychromos and they don't really smudge too much but I'm trying Prismacolors for the first time and having to remember to think about hand placement because they're smearing somewhat. For normal graphite pencil drawings I used to just use cheap unperfumed hairspray before upgrading (to Daler Rowley Perfix Colourless Fixative, specifically)-is that okay, or is there a better option?

Does anyone have any tips regarding what paper to use with water-soluble markers? I recently got some water colour markers as a present, but I can't get the colour to lift off the paper consistently and end up with ugly streaks. Saturating the paper beforhand kind of takes away from the precision I was hoping to get from them. Is there something really basic I am missing here?

I think the closest you'll get is "monologuing." Aside from the standard Shakespearan meaning, it's often used to describe a case where someone talks excessively about a subject to the point where no one else can get a word in edgewise.

I have Gimp and I'd like to use the clone tool like a bucket fill. I realize that I can turn an image into a pattern and then use the pattern setting on the bucket fill but this ends up tiling the image and I don't want to tile it indefinitely as the source image isn't tileable to begin with.

Basically I have an array of hexes and i'd like a way to easily insert the same image into various hexes without having to manually align each image.

I need a crash course in acrylics. I'm already a competent oil painter, but time constraints dictate that I use acrylics, plus I'll have to glue things on top of my painting. Looking for solid resources/tutorials pertaining to blending and scumbling primarily. I have golden retarder, but even with that and flow release my paint is drying too fast for me to reasonably work with/my brush pulls feel heavy.

Retarder medium is kind of bad. Maybe you should considered trying some Golden Open acrylics or another very slow drying variant. You can also get just the Open medium and then use it with your plain acrylics and it will give you an extra hour or two of blending time and a much smoother working texture.

OK. Cool. I'm not about to run out and buy a bunch of the open acrylics, but I saw the open thinner or whatever when I was researching this poo poo. Hopefully one of the art supply places near me has it. I'm just trying to do a "simple" gradient on a 3'x3' canvas I painted with acrylics like a year ago, so working time is pretty critical for me right now.

Edit: of course I'm trying to do yellow to purple so it'll have a tendency to turn green/brown on me. I guess I could just cheat and use spray paint instead.

Is there a thread for software in here that I've overlooked? I keep having the same drat error any time trying to update Adobe CC applications on my Macbook Pro and Adobe's support database has been less than helpful. Was hoping someone else had it and solved it.

edit: looks like it finally fixed itself at random. Still if there's a thread for it I'd appreciate a link since the uninstall/reinstall/not work/repeat cycle was really damned annoying and there's got to be a better way to address it (I hope)

My first animation is zoomout, my second animation is zoom in. Both keyframes - the end of the first and the first of the second - are set to 100%, yet between the two, my video ever so slightly morphs and changes.

What am I doing wrong?

I'm still not clear what the problem is. You might need to take some screenshots or something.

At a guess, it could be the spatial interpolation of the keyframes. After effects automatically tries to create a bezier path between your keys and it can add some unexpected motion. I'd explain how to change the interpolation from bezier to linear but it's all muscle memory now and I can't remember what keys to press.

I'm planning out a story right now, and at various points I wanted to drop a song title, and the artist/band who perform the song. I understand that song titles themselves are listed under Fair Use, but if I were to write "He was listening to Family Business by Kanye West" or put "Time - Pink Floyd" as a chapter title, would I need to gather permission considering the artists themselves are being mentioned?

Yeah probably interpolation/easing messing it up. Right click on the keyframes and go to "Keyframe velocity..." and set the outgoing velocity and influence to 0 for the "end of the first" keyframe, and set the incoming velocity and influence to 0 for the "first of the second" keyframe. And/or take a look at the Graph Editor and see what the values are doing there.

Download a 30 day trial of Photoshop. The software itself is complex but the thing you want to do is quite simple, so if you follow a tutorial you should be fine.

Watch out though, if you grab svg code from a site sometimes it won' t have the xml declarations up top, and without them won't work in Illustrator.

Hi guys
So in Photoshop there is a way to duplicate a window so that you can have one copy of your image zoomed out and the other zoomed in. This comes in handy because if you paint on one of the images your strokes will appear on the other as well. This gives you a better perspective on your work without using the navigator window, or constantly zooming in and out to see certain things.

So here is the problem. I like to finish my work in Corel Painter because the blending brushes are better for me. But I cant seem to find a way to duplicate a window. Is there a way to do this in Corel Painter 2015? In Photoshop all I have to do is go to Window>Arrange>New Window. Iv tried googling this for about 15mins and I cant seem to find the answer.

Anyone know how to pull this off?

There's Dick Blick stores peppered all over, but I loved Flax on the corner of Market and Valencia in San Francisco when I lived there. Can't really say anything about the other cities in the bay area though, not sure how far from SF proper you are.

Goons, I humbly ask for your help and feedback.

My wife has been drawing for years, but recently finished a year of posting her comic on her weasyl page (I dont like the site personally but she doesnt want to go back to DA) with a handful of watchers.

The problem is that she's writing in a vacumn and she hates it.

None of her pages get any comments or criticism of any sort. She also gets mad at people leaving favorites on her page, as she thinks it's stupid to not at least say why they liked it. She wants people to see and comment on her work, even to tear it down, and she's reached far past frustration at this point.

Phoneposting, so I'll link it later, but any advice on what she should do to get comments/critique would be greatly appreciated. I've tried to give advice, but it doesn't seem to affect anything, and art isn't anywhere near my strong suit.

Well networking and friends are the ways to get actual helpful eyes on your work these days. There used to be a lot of really good places for critique like CA, Cghub but many have died out. Instead, there are lots of small art communities out there, groups of friends and the like. You have to build your own community/network these days. In general if you critique someone they are more likely to critique you back in return, but I don't think the majority of gallery sites are going to be especially good for that.

As far as critiques go:

You do need to work a lot on your fundamentals, particularly line since that's really all you have in most of these. Your lines are scratchy and lacking in confidence and you'd benefit from learning to use your whole arm to draw. Life drawing is great for that, but there are other things you can do as well. There are plenty of tutorials online on improving line control and quality and those could be very useful for you. Also consider expanding your work flow. Right now it looks like you just have pencils that look rather unfinished for your comics. A sketch is a great place to start but you should then ink (either traditional or digital) your sketch. This will help with your lines as that forces you to commit to them. You can then experiment with line weight and contour to add form (even cartoony/videogame/etc styles have form) and add more strength to your drawings. After that you can shade, crosshatch, or add color or just leave it alone if you are just worrying about line at this point. Work on some exercises that specifically target your weaknesses and keep at it until you get better, one by one.

In respect to subject matter, there's an audience for anything, even fan comics but the big danger with those is if all you do is emulate that one style or IP you really really like then you are limiting the ways you can grow. At best you'll be that one artist who imitates that one thing really well. That's fine if it's all you want or you want to work with the company that owns the IP but that is going to put serious limits on what you can do. I think you should consider branching out more and trying to find your own style and your own distinct ip for a comic. That will give you more voice and once you've honed your craft and are producing more confident work you'll be in a better position to market and promote your work if that's what you ultimately want to do. That's just my two cents at any rate.

It all looks like a high schooler's margin drawings. We all start at the beginning and move our own ways up the craftsmanship ladder, and we all pass through the phase she seems to be operating in, but she's likely not getting a lot of feedback because her stuff just isn't that appealing. Everything is soft, grey and amateur. There's no commanding point of interest in any of the pieces; no compositional rules being invoked. It's not even in a "so bad it draws attention to the good writing" place. It's overall just very drab and uninteresting.

So how do you very out of there? Consume critically-acclaimed media in the area of your choice (so comics I guess) and analyze what is good about it overall but also in each page. As was said above, go back to the fundamentals: do projects and assignments that target a specific aspect such as line, form, mood, composition, or short form storytelling. She's at the point where she can dig in and just do what comes easy from here on out and never progress past "talented 17 year old" level or she can really start treating art as an academic trade and get serious. Either way is fine, and we all have to go through these stages, but she won't get much more than a meager following of like-minded fan types in her current state. To really get broader feedback, you have to earn it by captivating people.

Many of the people who are currently on top of their industries worked in amateurity and anonymity for years before really grabbing am audience. poo poo takes forever!

She should take some classes. Critique is only going to go so far, and the type of critique she'll receive from online communities who are interested in reading pencil drawn, furry anime comics is going to be worthless.

Everything mutata said is completely on point. If your wife tries to fix all of those problems by herself it's going to be hard, verging on impossible unless she's incredibly dedicated. However she has enough natural talent that a handful of classes would have a massive impact immediately.

Also a jerkishly worded point that's important for her to hear: stop drawing cartoons and anime until she knows how to draw. All she's doing is forming bad habits.

Totally not creating an account on whatever site that is just to give her this feedback so you'll have to pass it on: 1. the work you are posting as finished comic pages is what most comic artists would consider a rough sketch, 2. it is very obvious that you are not doing any sort of drawing or research outside of your furry/anime comfort zone, and 3. the website you have chosen to exclusively host your work on exists solely to allow furries to gather fetish material, of course you're not getting any real feedback or critiques.

You can draw furry art or anthro or whatever the hell you want to, whatever floats your boat do what you want. But if you limit yourself to only talking to and posting with other people who are similarly single-mindedly obsessed you are never going to go beyond drawing bad Sonic OCs and weirdo anime people with too many swords.

Heyo, tis the wife here.

Thank you all for destroying me. No, seriously, I really needed this. I haven't had an in depth critique like this since college five(?) years ago, and even then, I don't think they were as good as they could have been. So, I guess it makes sense that my skills have degenerated. I posted on Weasyl because I thought, well, yeah, furry comic, post it on a furry site. I do like the way it's set up and not everyone I met on there had some weird thing about them (as far as I knew). It didn't occur to me that getting them to comment would be like pulling teeth. I told myself, well, yeah, this takes time, and I post other stuff to appeal to the few non furries, so it'll work out. In general though, as others have commented on the site's own forum, the site itself just doesn't comment, I guess because they're just happy to look at pictures (which would explain why my views are decent, at least to me). But, if it's okay, I'd like to explain a few things.

As for doing everything in pencil, I've always just liked the way it looked. I've seen some amazing pencil pieces. But even I can admit my earlier pages aren't great. They're too light, the shading isn't great, some of the pages look lazy (and, honestly, are, which is why my backgrounds are sometimes non-existent). I've honestly thought about going back and at least darkening things. Maybe I can try to find a pen and pencil combination. I've done it once, and didn't like it, but maybe that's because I hadn't found a way to make it work. Either way, I just have this really weird love for pencil, so I'm going to do my best to make it look like a finished piece and not a sketch, should I fail to make the pen and pencil combo work for me. (thinking about it a bit, the sketchy look probably comes from being allowed to turn in stuff like this as finished in college. It was something no one ever really corrected me on, so it never occurred to me to think it might look unfinished).

As for the subject matter, I take inspiration from a lot of pieces, so that would explain my "bad Sonic OCs" (though I like to think I put more thought into them than most would their OCs). I'll probably always do anime/cartoony stuff--I grew up reading manga as opposed to American comics. I really should have been studying what made those great to me, so I'll be looking over those again. You have to learn the rules before you can bend them, as they say. So, I'm not trying to necessarily go beyond anything as far as subject goes. It's more like "Does the subject appeal to anyone? Oh, it doesn't? And that's why? Okay, I'll work on that."

I've also been looking into more discussion based forums as opposed to gallery based and found a few I think will help me improve, including a place that has daily assignments (and I think a few free lessons?) I have plenty of books I should be looking into as well. I guess I just got to the point where I thought "this is way better than I used to do, so I guess it's okay." But it's been a long time since I've really focused on the technical aspect of things, so I'll probably start my manga over from the beginning, after re-learning the fundamentals or maybe even use it to practice them, since it'll need all of those to be good anyway.

Finally, I hope this didn't come off as one of those "but it's my style!" sort of reply. Pencils are something I love, but I understand when you guys say they look weak and unfinished, that the line needs work. Even I've gone back and tried to make them look better, so I know there's a problem there. I guess I just needed others to tell me "yeah, there's a problem" to really be motivated to fix it.

So, yeah, I thought I should explain myself a bit here (probably should have done that first, but husband sort of surprised me with this). This was a bitter pill to swallow, but I wanted to say thank you for giving me a sharp kick in the butt nonetheless.
