That's a hella nice find for $50! AFAIK you're about right on the original price, but even today you'd expect to pay like $300, so you really got a deal there. Dunno about the motor in the tape deck, maybe it's just a belt or something.

And hit the platter spindle bearing with a few drops of oil, since it's probably never been lubricated ever. ISO 68 compressor oil is technically the correct type, and identical to the original Technics-supplied oil. Motor oil that starts with 20W should be fine, too. Single-grade detergent-free SAE20 is probably best, but the important bit is that you get it lubricated so the bearing isn't completely dry.

Frobbe posted:Kozmo, I've got some bearing oil for rc cars, that'll probably do the job Yeah, that's probably fine. If it's anything like an SL-1200, you can lift off the platter itself, and then pull up on the spindle to see if there's any oil on there at all. If the bearing oil is roughly the same viscosity, it'll work fine.

It's not that hard, I've replaced the cables on all three of the turntables I've owned. The Technics SL-1500 was the worst, since the RCA cable leads are soldered directly to the same pads as the super-thin tonearm wires, so it was a bit of an annoyance to keep both of them on the pad while soldering.

It's a pretty quick job if you have the parts. Don't know that exact turntable though. I'd suggest looking for a guide first. Worth a look.

Because the signal from a turntable cartridge is so low, this is actually an application where you need to pay a little bit of attention to the cable you use. The target is to have as low capacitance (and impedance) as possible. Luckily, component video cables (RGB, not composite) are both inexpensive and have very low capacitance.

All this gear for less than half of what I was going to spend on a worn out record player. I think I made out OK this weekend. One of the connectors for Speaker 1 on the receiver will not accept the plug, so the speakers are hooked up to Speaker 2, but I can't see it mattering too much.

Don't do that. Old radios like that are full of tubes and capacitors that have gone bad. I restored an old AM/shortwave radio and it was pretty easy to do the internal stuff. Just get a diagram of the caps and order new ones to solder in place. It sounds hard but it's really not. That said it's an AM radio, so it will sound about as good as an AM radio would.

Found a nice beefy Onkyo M-5100 power amp today for $35. Hooked it up and using my Marantz 2230 as a pre-amp. Sounds real nice and I'll probably keep it for a while since it's a pretty hefty upgrade in watts (110/channel) compared to the 2230's measly 30/channel. Can't find any other info about it, like what year it's from. Ebay sales indicate it's not worth a heck of a lot, maybe 100-200 only.

Here's a quick question: Recently I bought at DJ mixer (Pioneer DJM-909) and a couple of the buttons are sticky. I'll touch one and it will stay in the "down" position until I give it a little flick with my fingernail but obviously that's annoying. Any thoughts on the best way to de-stick my buttons? Should I try a bit of 91% alcohol on a Q-tip? Would deoxit be better? I'm hoping the issue can be fixed from the top side of the mixer so I don't have to open up the whole mixer just to clean like two or three buttons.

I picked up a couple of tapes at a fleamarket after haggling down the price 90%. My wife said "they look just like a hipster iphone cover." The tape deck works beautifully, and sounds pretty good. The button in front that opens/closes the drawer doesn't get any response, but the drawer pulls in when you turn the system off, so motors and belts are OK.

I'm working on cataloguing all of the vinyl records I have that I don't want. Is there anything that sticks out as possibly valuable in this list? I'm in north DFW so if any local goons see something interesting they want I'm looking to sell. I'd mail them too if you don't mind paying for postage. I've probably got 150-200 records to sell, currently at 80 entered into this Google doc. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1RT2TAPDgGyNOEIjdenq216qqREf60fMlgjIJHZygcfU/edit?usp=sharing

Based on a very brief glance I'd say the Zappa is probably the most exciting of that lot. Most of the rest seem fairly common but you might get some cash from a local record store for some of the evergreen stuff.
