IMO, if you want to shoot video, get a video camera or use your phone. Using my 5D3 for family type video stuff has been aggravating as hell and I don't bother anymore.

Ryand-Smith posted:Has anyone in here used the 15-85 EF-S glass? Just asking for idle curiosity. I personally loved it, only reason why I got rid of it was moving to full frame. I pretty much used it to shoot landscape stuff and it seemed to do great at that. The build quality makes it feel like and L lens, the only problem I ran into was my filter holder would vignette the image at the wide end.

So I went an talked to a guy and yeah, 6D for video is silly buggers. There is no full frame in Canon or Nikon that does auto focus in video, the 70D is quite sweet (I played with it and took a video with panning and auto focusing) but it's another crop camera that I don't need. The guy was saying the 5D Mark 4 may have the auto focus of the 70D in a full frame which will be what I finally want, but that's six months away and may not even do it in the end. So because I've already got a DSLR I'm happy with and I really love shooting and editing video, I think I'm going to buy a video camera. Is there a megathread on the forums for them? I looked at the C100 and C300 Canon cameras, which were sweet and would let me use interchangeable lenses. But for the moment for under 1k you can get great Canon, Panasonic, Sony and other video cameras that when it comes to smooth focus and zooms (for pans, etc) are way better than any DSLR I saw. I played with the Sony 1dx (I think that's it), mirroless with the stabilisation in the body rather than the lens.. and it had video autofocus but it wasn't as good as the 70D. So video camera for now and 5D Mark4 might be the all-in-one that I'm really hanging for.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/647011-USA/Canon_3554B002_EF_100mm_f_2_8L_Macro.html Anyone ever use this lens? I was shooting a bit the other day and realized I need two things to once and for all complete my digital kit: A true macro that is maneuverable (I.E., I don't have to be right on top of something to get insane detail out of it), and some kind of lens wider than a 35mm that isn't a piece of fuckshit. I guess this one looks alright? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/843009-USA/Canon_5345B002_EF_24mm_f_2_8L_IS.html But I am fairly tempted to go all Zeiss and also, kill myself by eating ramen exclusively for 3 months: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/839987-REG/Zeiss_1871766_Distagon_T_25mm_f_2_0.html Anyone wanna help a brother out here? I was also scoping out analog lenses that would fit either of these parameters but I'm not even sure where to begin in finding a dope analog lens that will fit my MK3's EF mount and match the Zeiss quality I am now accustomed to.

Great lens. Doubles well for portraits so its a good choice if you don't already have one. I'm a cheapskate though so i use a 40mm pancake and extension tubes for macro.

If you're already paying ~$600, I'd pay another $200 or so and get the Sigma 24 1.4.

I have a friend with the older non-IS version of the 100mm 2.8 macro that i borrow from time to tme. Same as Seamonater said: great lens, and really does double duty as a portrait lens.

I've also got the non-IS version of the 100mm macro and it's one of my favorite lenses. I've shot plenty of portraits with it, and the working distance for macro is a huge advantage compared to extension tubes.

You can't go wrong with either 100mm lens, but I chose the non-L version because I only use it for macro and the extra cost for IS wasn't worth it for me.

If you're going all Zeiss, the Zeiss 100 Makro-Planar is still the best macro lens I've used. Bitingly sharp with buttery smooth falloff.

So how bad is the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II? I'm looking for a tele lens to take on a vacation to shoot some elephants and penguins and what not that are too far away for 50mm. Under different circumstances I'd probably get a used 70-200 f/4 but I want something as light and cheap as possible as I'd be traveling a lot in some sketchy areas.

Not in the US, unfortunately. The STM is like $300 here while I can get a used mk2 for about $120. I'm actually going to be in Hong Kong where I saw new ones for sale at almost the same price but I'll only get there at the end of the trip which is pretty useless. Anyway, thanks for the comments, seems like it's pretty decent and a good value. I still have some time so maybe a used STM will pop up somewhere.
