Eh, deny a little bit. They were a good team, the type that can flush out early or go on a run. They went on a run.

Confirm for sure that most of the country was rooting for Kentucky in that game.

e: The thing that 30 for 30 got right (I agree with the people saying it was kind of all over the place) is that's where gently caress Duke really got started. There were plenty of reasons after that and a few before, but Laettner (and Hurley) really started most of it.

Also, there is something so incredibly sad about the two guys that were, like, professional Duke haters.
I hate Duke as much as anybody here, but that Andy Bagwell guy or whatever his name was came across as an extraordinarily whiny rear end in a top hat. I'm going to take an incredibly wild shot in the dark and guess that he has no idea that that's what the nation at large's first impression of him will be.

And holy poo poo could I have done without seeing that cringeworthy Duke Sucks YouTube song. Otherwise I thought the show was fine. I had completely forgotten that Laettner went 10/10 from the field and 10/10 from the line in the Kentucky game :stare:

I think it's more the fact that they shouldn't have been there in the sense that just a few years earlier the program had been hit with some pretty severe NCAA sanctions over things that had happened while Eddie Sutton was coaching them in the late 1980's. They shouldn't have been that good again that quickly.

After watching that and seeing "The Stomp" again, it seems to be blown way out of proportion. He wasn't even close to stomping down with full force. It was a dick move but not one intended to injure. Jalen acting like he'd be thrown out of college basketball was kind of silly.

Not one of the better 30 for 30's but was interesting.

Well Jalen was also the one who referred to Grant Hill as an Uncle Tom in the Fab 5 documentary so he's pretty hyperbolic when it comes to those particular Duke teams.

I thought Catching Hell was a 30 for 30? It's one of the better ones, and I'm a Cubs fan. Only slightly unbelievable that there's a couple people in there who seem completely unrepentant about how awful they were to Bartman.

I really liked Catching Hell, think it was the first 30 for 30 I watch. Granted i'm a British guy who likes baseball, so I only knew the barebones of the Bartman & Buckner stories, so they were pretty fresh for me.

The footage of Bartman leaving Wrigley after the game is pretty hair raising :stare:

Catching Hell was interesting but it was too long. No reason it needed to be 2 hours long. Gibney has a very distinct style to his documentaries and sometimes it works and sometimes it just feels cheap. I think the most illuminating stuff as others have pointed out is the Bartman footage of him getting escorted out and the interview with the woman security guard who was genuinely moved by the predicament he was in. I didn't need to see the constant break down of what seat he was in and all that.

Somewhat related: I finally got around to watching "Red Army", which if you've seen the "Of Miracles and Men" 30 for 30, this goes into far greater detail about the Soviet hockey program as a whole. Both feature Slava Fetisov very heavily. He basically treats Gabe Polsky like crap (which is kind of hilarious, honestly. Polsky seems really out of his depth with Fetisov) but he has some fantastic stories, and goes into great depth about the famed "Russian Five". Also has neat interviews with Vladisav Tretiak and a former KGB agent who traveled with the team to prevent defections. It's on Google Play and I'd imagine iTunes as well.

E: Oh and Werner Herzog was an executive producer, which owns.

It was undoubtedly a total miscarriage of justice. But, to be fair, assuming a Duke Lacrosse player is a rapist is usually a pretty safe bet.

Yeah but again, that's kinda the point.

I actually was shocked by the self-awareness of the one player in the end saying "If it was this easy for us to get railroaded, I'm terrified for people without our resources." Props to them for working with The Innocence Project. Even Duke isn't pure evil, I guess. :unsmith:

Yeah. I'm no fan of Duke athletics but it is obvious what a disaster the whole event was. Most shameful was the amount of Duke faculty that openly attacked the lacrosse players and have, to this day, refused to back down or apologize. A big shame too, because I like Duke as a university and see the Carolina- Duke sports rivalry as fun but not as important as academic cooperation.

Another crazy thing about that Duke case is how many of the reporters who were incompetent in their coverage still work for major news outlets today. Goes to show where that industry is today.

I'm also really excited about the Penny-Shaq 30 for 30 coming up. I hope they do it well.

In fairness, news coverage has always been an absolute mixed bag. There are shining lights of journalistic integrity for as far back as we can see, just as there is awful shithead coverage where corners are cut.

I think it's just weird that a lot of those reporters went on to have careers. Like ESPN and SI fought over getting Selena Roberts and the Times didn't fire her. Duff Wilson not only got hired by Reuters but also went on to actually teach Journalism at Columbia. These are people who wrote for the New York Times. How incompetent do you have to be before it actually starts hurting your career?

I just saw the end of a replay of the Hillsborough 30 for 30. The text at the end has been changed. The original airing has the words "the fight for justice continues", the version I just saw notes the recent outcome of the coroner's inquest.
